Never read the series though. But if we look into how transmuting may work irl, it takes a ton of additional energy for "equivalent exchange" (though I don't know how real to life this is in theoretical transmutation). It's probably possible to turn lead into gold through some nuclear process but adding and removing subatomic particles like that isn't straightforward or easy to do. Never mind something more complex.

The apprentices are struggling with the circle for a bit, but they quickly get to a level where that isn't the thing causing problems. And since you want to adjust the circle size depending on what you need, it is quicker to just draw a quick circle even if it isn't as precise as a compass drawn circle than to prep a bunch of almost complete circles.
