Agreed. I've been around long enough to remember that they got their start charging people to watch low quality streams of free fansubs. I don't care that no one currently involved with them was actually there for that, I'm still not going to support them.

Shows with no subs or very late subs are still getting fansubbed, even this season.

It's just how the modern era is, every localizer is just a failed writer so they're not really thinking about the audience who would be interested in the original work, they think they're appealing to some audience that's interested in THEIR work and wants to see them "leave their mark" on someone else's shit.

>>
>>288208830
I unironically see no merit in Crunchyroll's continued existence.
Their business model is to position themselves as a middle-man between normies and something that's always been easily accessible for free.
Hell, it was common sense that watching fansubbed anime was the way to do it, and it was normal until there was a mass migration of redditors who were so fucking consumerist they couldn't fathom not paying for shit.
Fansubbing was free and normal before, and it can be free and normal again. Hell, Crunchyroll is just going to replace their translators with AI anyway, and even if AI is evil and shitty, it's still better than the retards Crunchyroll hires anyway.
What utility do they even have as a company other than putting shit that's been free for decades behind a paywall?

We will RETVRN to fansubs if/when CR isn't around. Look at Thunderbolt Fantasy S4, when it was airing, it seemed as though CR wasn't releasing it like it did with past seasons, or at least it wasn't doing simulcast. When it sunk in on anons that no CR subs were coming out, within a single day, anons banded together and started putting together their own translation. And they did it weekly, like the old days. The threads were also great and genuinely felt like old /a/.

This was the fault of AT&T and Warner Bros. management giving a cartoon network reject to Crunchyroll after deciding to expand into creating original content.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunchyroll
Prior to any management by restrictive American companies, Crunchyroll did Pro-Fiction stuff like pic rel. Its downfall began after Japan won its bid on Sep. 7th, 2013 for the 2020 Olympics. Cherin Group bought a controlling interest in Crunchyroll on Dec. 3, 2013. Then, a joint venture (Otter Media) was established between AT&T and Cherin Group to manage Crunchyroll on April 22, 2014.
In Janurary 2018, AT&T (which also owned Warner Bros. at this point), bought out the final 20% of Crunchyroll owned by TV Tokyo. August 2018, AT&T bought out Otter Media and became the sole owner.

Then,
https://deadline.com/2018/08/ellation-launches-division-to-create-original-content-names-women-in-animation-president-margaret-dean-studio-head-1202449733/
> the launch of Ellation Studios
> Margaret Dean, former general manager of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and current president of Women in Animation, has been named head of studio for the new division.
https://www.thegamer.com/high-guardian-spice-interview-raye-rodriguez-crunchyroll/
> I created High Guardian Spice in 2013. It started as a 5-minute storyboard pitch for Frederator while I was interning there. It didn’t get picked up
> Eventually I pitched it to Crunchyroll in 2016 and they liked it a lot, though they didn’t have the bandwidth at the time to make it as a show. We started developing it as a comic in 2017, then I repitched it to them as a show when Marge Dean started at the company in 2018, and it quickly changed from comic to TV show!
https://www.skwigly.co.uk/the-fear-of-trans-stories-in-animation/
> Like, when I had pitched High Guardian, I was pitching it as a kids show for like Nickelodeon, Frederator, Cartoon Network etc, so I was kind of downplaying the queerness of it.
>>
>>288218693
The offensive part about it is that it's paid propaganda that is destroying actual content.
That's a completely different thing than people just having freedom of expression, but I guess a corpro-leftist cocksucker like you can't understand that.
Here's a hint for you; I'm not getting PAID to call you a fragile pussy, nor am I ruining a product to do it.
>>
>>288227885
Yeah AT&T was being run by a fucking retard that fucked up the Time Warner Merger only to end up getting booted and AT&T willingly selling off Time Warner to escape that shit.
>>
>>288227885 (me) Continuation:
After 2021, Crunchyroll was sold by AT&T/WarnerMedia to Sony Pictures. Now, it's under the management of the awful Funimation, and Crunchyroll practically doesn't exsit anymore. What people call Crunchyroll is actually Funimation.
Funimation has a continued history of unfaithful localizations and censorship that is well-documented. Additionally, Sony has its own history of censorship & restrictions, especially post-2018 and dominated by (America) Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Despite this, some may notice that (Japan) Sony Music/Aniplex also manages Funimation/Crunchyroll, and they may express skepticism on the claim that (America) Sony Pictures can enforce restrictions. An example of Sony Group's branches operating independently was the remastered Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon. Sony Interactive Entertainment/PlaySation censored its art book, while Aniplex included it uncensored for the Nintendo Switch. See image attached. (Note: Nintendo, particularly European and American branches, have continued to enforce their own censorship policies/Anti-Fiction restrictions.)
Contrary to the Sony Music/Aniplex's management, the Crunchyroll platform is not accessible in Japan. Furthermore, it's directly managed by Funimation. Therefore, pro-expression Japanese management must be limited, and Sony Pictures & Funimation will always unsustainably appease American Anti-Fiction activists.

It's unbearable how Crunchyroll consistently cultivates dislike or apathy. Anime fans see news like in >>288208830 yet we will never consider advocating for Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll will never be the place for anime fans because of censorship, vandalized/unfaithful translations, their refusal to create and support high-quality .ass subtitles, and their out-of-touch management.
I want a Crunchyroll that we can all shill. Crunchyroll is an anime-only platform, yet their management actively ensure anime otaku must despise the platform.

>>288217297
Completely incorrect. Every single zoomer uses either CR or YouTube to watch anime if they watch it at all.
>>
>>288230003
I'm a zoomer and I torrent.
Don't use absolutes in an argument because one contrary example renders it incorrect. "Gen Z (do not use marketing terminology) are more likely to use CR or YouTube to watch anime than older generations" conveys your ideas better.

Piratefags used nyaa stats to prove jop pirate more than them but forgot westoid thirdworlders are all in on streaming lol.

>B-B-B-BUT GAME NEWELL SAYS PIRACY IS A SERVICE PROBLEM! IT'S CRUNCHYROLL'S FAULT IF PEOPLE PIRATE!

What the fuck do people want from crunchyroll? They do simulcasts and translations of like 7 languages, the pirates just steal that shit.
The streaming quality seems pretty good, especially compared to some of the shitty piracy sites I've used with shitty ads and constant buffering.
What the fuck is crunchyroll supposed to do? People say "I pirate because crunchyroll is shit" but you were always going to pirate no matter how good crunchyroll was

For one, actual quality control. CR constantly has typos or outright formatting errors where they'll skip or fuck up lines.
>>
>>288231054
Opposed to fansub shit?

Let's be real though, if crunchyroll had absolutely immaculate grammer, you would still pirate. You would still claim "CRUNCHYROLL IS SHIT THAT'S WHY I'M JUSTIFIED PIRATING" and when people ask you why it's shit, you'd either not answer or stutter about gabe newell's quote again
>>
>>288231195
I will never give CR a cent out of principle since I was around before they went "legit" and remember what a piece of shit its founder was.
>>
>>288230986
I want them gone
they are a blight to anime
>>
>>288231242
I guess that's fair, but something tells me that if crunchyroll was always a friendly legitimate company, you'd still pirate.

The crunchyroll founder being a piece of shit isn't why their profits dropped 63%. A couple of typos aren't why their proftis dropped 63%.

Piracy is why their profits dropped. I mean, competition from netflix also contributed, but still no one has given any magical solution crunchyroll could do to make their service so good that people would happily pay a subscription like they pay for steam games. There's nothing the companies can do when their product is ripped and easily viewable withing 10 minutes
>>
>>288231370
and "localization" is supposed to help with that?
how does owning the chuds help make a better service

I don't pay for any streaming service. I'll occasionally buy physical merchandise/BDs/manga/eroge/etc if I enjoy a series enough. Paying for streaming is fucking retarded and always will be.
>>
>>288231428
Perfect. I'm not shaming you for this. I'm trying to get to the bones of the argument where people act like crunchyroll is inherently shit and they are the problem, when the real problem is piracy. If you don't want to pay for streaming, that's fine. But don't pretend that crunchyroll needs to "shape up" if they want profits.
>>
>>288231450
>crunchyroll is inherently shit
They are. What are you even trying to defend? They're grossly incompetent at the most basic fucking level.
>>
>>288231477
But nobody has said how they are incompetent. Other than some typos and I guess occasionally having problematic localization.

But let's be real, you don't care that much about that. Or if you do, 63% of their proftibase leaving doesn't care about that.

I don't have anything for or against crunchyroll, I'm just trying to make people face reality that piracy is their biggest problem, yet some people claim that "if crunchyroll was good, we'd all pay and no one would ever pirate!"
>>
>>288231546
Gaben figured out the problem 20 years ago: Its about service, not piracy. I suspect you are parroting jap talking points, they are stuck in the 90s regarding that issue, litigious and bitter against anyone that dares say no to their practices. Regarding Crunchyroll, everyone that works there should off themselves, no good thing will come to anime from an western company, NETFLIX already permanently affected what type of manga and anime is produced, and it will only get worse as the medium becomes less and less Japanese.
>>
>>288214219
Typo aside, the translation's not even correct. The sentence actually reads:
>恐らく録画映像には、犯人に改変された僕の姿が…
>It's likely the culprit's altered my appearance in the video footage...
Both fan and officials subbers get way too loose with the wording and it always pisses me off. It's like, great, glad you guys understand the plot, but just put the fries in the bag.

The amount of times this Steam shit is brought up is retarded. Especially when people want a "Steam for anime" or manga or whatever. People complain about censorship on streaming sites but Steam does the same shit. I can't count the number of times I've seen people complaining about censored VNs or just games in general on Steam. Not to mention when they allow studios to remove older versions of games and replace them with remasters or phone ports. Imagine an Anime Steam removing the TV version of NGE and all you can watch is the Rebuilds. Plus their DRM, regardless of how much people want to say that doesn't matter because of such and such way around it. Retarded idea by retarded people.
>>
>>288231711
You are absolute right, still it is the best service for PC gaming available, even with all these faults.

That problem could be mitigated by a little bit of Japanese initiative, but they rather take a quick buck from Gaijin and let them figure it out, only to sperg on Japanese twitter later about how piracy is ruining their business model. I am sorry but if their culture believes you are obliged to take shit from corporate assholes because a better product isn't financially viable enough, that's their problem.
>>
>>288231711
Do you even remember how big of a fucking mess PC gaming was before Steam? With bullshit like CD keys, install limits, half-baked DRM, etc. Not to mention even buying PC games was a shitshow as consoles became more and more successful with game shops relegating PC games to one shelf that was 90% just copies of WoW and Guild Wars.

Which for me is a shame since I am an obsessive nerd for that historical topic, but I get that Crunchyroll wasn't the ideal place for it, and it should have ideally been on Netflix or something instead

Nah I'm also a zoomer and I can admit we use streaming services for the most part.
Most zoomers "into anime" are posers too. Their watchlist consists of Death Note, AOT, Vinland Saga, etc. Because it fits a certain aesthetic they're trying to express. They genuinely think there's no experience like AOT and everything else is "The time I got hit by a bus and got transported into a world where I'm not a loser" slop.

it's not even about piracy. the reality that there are already enough overpriced streaming services, and the mainstream audience would rather pay for a service like netflix or hulu, that offer way more options available to them + anime, than a service dedicated entirely to anime.

actual "anime" anime that isn't just jjk and frieren are still seen as "weird" to the mainstream audience, which is why the rest are dumped on crunchyroll, a platform for all the "weird anime fans". a platform like neflix would heavily censor it, so their audience doesn't feel "weird". yet crunchyroll still has bad actors mistranslating and censoring their content. now the anime fans can't even watch anime.

$15 USD 1 off payment for downloadable digital copies of 12 standard length anime episodes, untranslated or soft subs.
If you need me to make an account for your webstore fine but I'm not paying for a subscription.
I'm willing to pay to watch anime, it just needs to be via the criteria suitable to me.

But noooo there can't be a 'digital downloads' section on the storefront Trigger's website links to that has affordable prices, only the expensive blurays and dvds to import.

Stop trying to inject identity politics and then we *may* consider supporting. Everyone is so sick and tired of your virtue signaling and hijacking every media we like (video games, anime and manga). You willingly shot your own foot and now trying to pin the blame on consumers in confusion for voting with their own wallets. Stop crying like a little bitch. You reap what you sow. People are willing to do translation on their own rather than getting exposed to the propaganda on one thing they want NO politics involved whatsoever.

Frankly said, anime was fine with Japanese money alone.
The Japanese enthusiasts and, for children's shows, the Japanese mainstream were more than enough to finance all the anime you could ever wish for.
I am paying my fair share, but I'm left wondering, if I'm not rather hurting anime with that money. "We", the West, are so completely fucked in the head, that any influence from "us" can only be bad.
I'd prefer to buy a subscription with a platform run by Japanese in Japan and with the option to watch without subs, because fuck having letters thrown at you, even though you understand the original Japanese dub just fine.

Because in their eyes that is a lazy/incomplete way of translating, or something to that effect.
A lot of the old anime/VN fan translators who are still around think this way, mainly the ones who went legit and made a career out of it.
