To Love Ru, for example, would have been fucking pointless if not for all the insane heroines causing wanton shenanigans at every opportunity. Haruna could never have carried that series on her own, and she was only able to be entertaining by way of getting caught up in the bullshit caused by other characters than herself. Her only character trait besides liking Rito was being afraid of ghosts. And they squeezed as much comedy out of that as they could before no longer bothering with it.
HimaTen also makes me think about the other tri-route romcom out right now and Kusonoki going through its own bullshit with the trio getting written weirdly. Kusonoki and Honoka both self-sabotaging to clear the way for Himari/Hebikawa to take an undeserved center stage while the obvious late introducion loser of Moe/Kanna are there just to suffer and actually actively pursue the MC to show the audience that girls do find him attractive.
