Each main title can stand alone (hence why Toonami got away with playing Cosmo Warrior Zero only).The only thing that I can tell you is to treat this as you would Tezuka, Ishinomori or Nagai. You are looking at a star system, just a more focused, concentrated star system than that of Tezuka and more meaningful crossovers than those of Nagai and more substantial cameos than that of Ishinomori.Look at Kei Yuki, another such example that the "Leijiverse" is a star system. She supposedly leaves at the end of Captain Harlock when the crew disbands, yet she appears again later on in the film version of Galaxy Express 999.
