Luini actually had an amazing ability. It's extremely useful, it has reasonable yet strict conditions and it can be used to kill lots more people to level up. Luini is weak because he has WEAK NEN, but that's true for everyone in Heil-Ly (other than Dogman). Most hatus considered good in the series actually just have strong users, but this is one of the best hatsu in the series, even for a nen weakling. In the former case he might be trying to reprogram the ritual so he can steal the guardian spirit beasts and then use that for the Dark Continent. If his goal is to elevate a true heir there's more unknowns because unless they know who their father is and care about him. If they win, they wouldn't necessarily feel like they own him anything.

The best thing about HxH is that Togashi explains mechanics of nen works BEFORE it becomes plot relevant, and then that knowledge will continue to be relevant for the rest of the series.In JJK you'll learn something about cursed energy in the middle of a scene, only for that dynamic to never repeat again, making it useless knowledge.>Gojo explains how barriers interact in domain clashes when fighting Jogo>we never see a traditional domain clash ever

>>289524029I think it's fun. It has rules and sticks to them, but it's creative to the point you find abilities interesting while still being somewhat respectful of reality. Fullmetal Alchemist has a cool power system with alchemy, but most often Ed just makes rocks or a blade. It makes sense, rocks are everywhere and easy to think of and use in a fight, but as a result Ed is just making rock shields and transmuting his arm to go into close combat most of the time. It's functional and logical, but a bit boring over time. When it goes further into alchemy, you get chemistry autism which I feel is lost on most viewers (03, Ed vs Sloth). But when FMA manages to get more fun with it's power system, you get Roy Mustang, who has ones of the coolest powers in anime. His powers are still grounded in an alchemic explanation (even if it's ridiculous), but it works because it's just a really cool idea. Unfortunately Roy is the standout ability in all of FMA, even beating out the mc, and the other alchemists in the show aren't nearly as interesting. I think that's why people love the homunculi so much, because in comparison their powers are much more interesting than the alchemists, which shouldn't be. So imo FMA's power system is good but it's held back somewhat by the fact it tries to remain too grounded in reality sometimes. HxH does a much better job at being more liberal with its powers, and this works because nen is designed structurally well and is a creative foundation to begin with. FMA's foundation is science, which is naturally limiting.

the fact nen is well designed is tangential. what matters is how it is applied in the story and how good togashi is at weaving the power system into the drama. obsession with power systems and world building as buzzwords comes from brandon sanderson redditors.
