He was the bland protag with a generic nice guy personality that all the girls flocked to for some reason, and even him getting Incursio was because a much cooler character had to die to give it to him. That said, he did get better after his second meeting with Esdeath and especially once he chose Mine and became an outright good character at the end. Adding Wave as his foil really helped too.
