true OP.

They gave Batou blue hair in the new anime and made her stupid and goofy for some reason.

Major had so much more respect towards Batou in the movie, he gave her his coat when she was naked like a real gentleman. I don't see Major doing that in the new anime, he's just an idiot.

Have you ever seen him draw people?

His default approach to drawing faces is a blob with a big nose and small beady eyes. Then he tries to refine it.

Okay no real talk: the reasoning behind Motoko's design here is that she's supposed to have the same face as the Puppetmaster, who is angel/bird-themed. Therefore he needed her to have a straight pointy nose and eagle eyes. The eyebrows are taken from the manga puppetmaster. And angels are androgynous so he gave the puppetmaster androgynous features, which means Motoko also needed to have those.
That is not to say Motoko herself is bird-themed but it's meant to explain why she thinks of the Puppetmaster as her fwend for no good reason.

Source for this
>>
>>290310462
you can plainly see that they have the same face and that the puppetmaster looks like an angel with eagle eyes.

In Oshii's filmic language, angel is a codeword for bird:

>The image of a bird is not a metaphor for an angel. Quite the opposite. The angelic image has to do with the way we look at birds. It is similar to the case of fish. They live in a different environment than we do. We don't know what they are thinking.
>>
>>290310506
Yeah I know he's on record for the whole angel/bird stuff but it looks like you pulled the whole "Motoko has a pointy nose for bird reasons" out your ass
>>
>>290310578
yeah the pointy nose I kinda did, it's also probably an attempt to make her look like a Kawajiri character. But if you wanna make a girl look birdlike are you gonna give her a straight pointy nose or are you gonna give her a tiny cute little button nose like in the manga?

I man I guess you could give her a bigass hooked nose too to REALLY hammer home the beak idea, but that's not really an option is it?

I'd love to discuss Tarkovsky movies with you by the way since Oshii lived long enough to become the villain and is quite frankly passe
>>
>>290310671
It is great, as a matter of fact. The flaws are so minimal and inconsequential I can hardly believe it exists at all. In some small ways it even improves over the manga.
Aside from the intro of episode 3 which is total shit.

My interest in Tarkovsky is 95% determined by my interest in Oshii so I'm afraid I won't be able to offer much commentary you aren't already aware of when it comes to his stuff.
But I'm eager to take recs from you so long as they help me understand Oshii.

>Up to a certain extent. She never fully commits.
She fully committed to fighting the tank and was seconds from getting pasted when Batou showed up. She was also prepared to dive the PM without Batou's (ultimately ineffective) backup.

>they're all smiling at some point though, even before understanding anything about their condition, and have a fascination with angels.
They smile at appropriate moments, I don't think that is particularly significant. It's just that a lot of the cast are fairly stone-faced professionals. In any case the Puppetmaster himself likes to smile, so it's not a useful indicator distinguishing his possession from memory manipulation.

The angel lines are a bit more interesting, it's something Oshii added, so there could be some intentionality. Only the trash guy mentions angels. He does it two times, both to describe the smile of the "daughter" created by the PM. Motoko and/or Puppetier see an angel right before they conceive a daughter (who like the PM tends to smile).

>Possibly, but that doesn't bode well for the implicit consent theory either if what we're seeing is the puppetmaster's satisfaction and not hers.
I don't think it really matters, that's not even the last shot of them. They probably both enter Motoko's body at some point though.
>>
>>290323652
>She fully committed to fighting the tank and was seconds from getting pasted when Batou showed up
Doesn't quite mean she was willing to die in the process, though. What it means is that she overestimated her strength. After all, it's not like dying at this point in the film would help her achieve anything.
So, while it proves she's reckless, it doesn't prove she's willing to die.

>They smile at appropriate moments, I don't think that is particularly significant.
I'm bringing up the smile in combination with the buggy eyes specifically as a sign of neurological tampering. But I'll rewatch Corgi's scene again later to check if I didn't miss anything.

>The angel lines are a bit more interesting, it's something Oshii added, so there could be some intentionality. Only the trash guy mentions angels. I think it's a pretty strong indicator of the rape thing personally, but I didn't want to bring extradiegetic Oshii knowledge into this, so I won't bang on it much further, but it does indicate that angels are probably fake, which bolsters the SimEx idea at the very least.
>>
>>290323652
>I don't think it really matters, that's not even the last shot of them. They probably both enter Motoko's body at some point though.
Yeah honestly one way or the other, it's still a massive departure from the source material.

It's not even like the manga made her consent particularly assertive either, Oshii could have still spun her response as an ambiguous sub/dom thing like you said, instead he chose to remove it altogether.

So, to summarize, I think that's significant insofar as it reframes the whole theme of transcendance in a negative light.
Either it's real, but non-consensual in which case it's immoral
or it's consensual but fake, in which case it's nonsense
or it's both.
or it's both real and consensual, but I think that's the least likely option given the amount of changes Oshii introduced. And I'm only talking about changes that don't involve references to other films or stories.

everyone is an object in GitS
men, women, robots

what matters is the connexions between them. Are you an object of contempt, an object of love, an object of hatred, an object of desire, an object of resentment etc etc etc

I mean that's storytelling 101 really but in the original GitS (and in the original GitS ONLY) it's also a literal cosmic force

>So, while it proves she's reckless, it doesn't prove she's willing to die.
She bet everything on an action she could not withdraw from. That is "fully committing."

>I think it's a pretty strong indicator of the rape thing personally, but I didn't want to bring extradiegetic Oshii knowledge into this, so I won't bang on it much further, but it does indicate that angels are probably fake, which bolsters the SimEx idea at the very least.
The last-minute simex idea is retarded because there is no indication Mokoto is unwilling up to that point. There is no point in brainwashing her to consent when she has been consenting for the past five minutes.

The angel is associated with advancement to a higher level of being, which would be achieved by the PM's offspring. I think the PM was inflicting his baby fantasies on the trash guy.

>>290324280
The merger is clearly real and consensual. There is no evidence of rape, and you see their offspring which has traits from both parents. The most significant difference in this version is the centrality of Mokoto's internal motivations, which are more of a sideshow in the manga.
>>
>>290325970
>She bet everything on an action she could not withdraw from. That is "fully committing."
Not if she was confident in her chances to succeed. Then it's just a mistake on her part.

>when she has been consenting for the past five minutes.
We went over this. Asking question after question in a scared voice and expressing doubts is not consent. At best it's resignation.

I could buy resignation, but it's not the same as consent.

>I think the PM was inflicting his baby fantasies on the trash guy.
And on Corgi who was looking up at the sky
so why not on Motoko too?

>The merger is clearly real and consensual.
the absence of an unambiguous expression of consent makes it, at the very least, UNCLEARLY consensual,
And the presence of indicators of artificiality (scanlines, angels in previous SimExes) suggest it's fake.

this started as a shitpost thread anyway so no big loss

i'll rewatch some material tomorrow night, so don't worry if I take some time, I'd like us to come to an agreement or at the very least define some unreconciliable points of disagreement.

For example I feel like your definition of consent is quite loose compared to mine, which is based on what the manga showed us (which isn't even a particularly strong form of consent) so if we can't budge on that it'd be good to at least make it official.

>We went over this. Asking question after question in a scared voice and expressing doubts is not consent. At best it's resignation.
She initiated contact to learn about him, of course she is asking questions. After initially giving consent through penetrating him, her questions show she is conscious and still capable of revoking consent, but is engaging rather than rejecting him.

The presence of fear is not itself a sign of rape, and should be expected in her circumstances. She even says explicitly that she feels fear alongside hope when sea diving, the activity she uses to simulate transformation.

>And on Corgi who was looking up at the sky
So... not an angel. Motoko was just shooting at him from the roof too. What would even be the point of an angel vision?

>And the presence of indicators of artificiality (scanlines, angels in previous SimExes) suggest it's fake.
I'm actually not sure I understand what you mean by fake merger. If the PM's "genes" were not really passed on, then he let himself die for nothing.

There were no explicit angels in previous simexes. Just one guy who described his daughter as having an angelic quality. Scanlines are in POV shots throughout the film. They are cybernetic entities connecting through a computer, it's not complicated. At first I though there was some significance to the feathers in one shot not being scanlined, but on review it was just the only one not from their POV.

>>290327237
Consent was given at the start of intercourse when she penetrated the PM and he let her in. This is the same extent of consent given in the first PM encounter from the manga, which is the one that is compared to sex.

Togusa being part of Section 9 in the Movies and SAC make sense, skilled Detective joins an established and prestigious counter terrorism unit is not a hard sell but I just recently read the OG manga and 1.5 in preparation for the new series and found out that he was part of Shell Squad before Section 9 was formed. We know why the Major wanted an outlier like him but did they ever give the specifics of how he joined? The Major's unit were basically a bunch of borged up war veterans and their mini tanks working essentially as mercs, the series starts with her looking to go legit. How did a detective with a wife and kid decide to throw away his stable job and work with a bunch of legally grey mercs? While were at it, I doubt the Major set up a booth at a job fair, I wonder how Togusa even got on her radar? Do they ever tell that story?

Right, I think I see the issue:
1- I don't consider ghost-diving to be sex. Merging is.
2- Here's my minimal standard for consent. Her lines in this panel right here, which Oshii deliberately removed. Manga Puppetmaster even explicitly remarks upon how quickly she consents, meaning that's the type of consent it wanted out of her, not just something implicit. Anything less than that, I consider rape.
(when it comes to merging specifically, not when it comes to ghost-diving)

Oshii had the blueprint for what Motoko's consent looks like, all he had to do was to add two lines and chose not to.

>She even says explicitly that she feels fear alongside hope when sea diving, the activity she uses to simulate transformation.
The way it goes is
-fear, anxiety, isolation, darkness
-sometimes hope
In the ghost-dive scene she sounds afraid the whole time, but even if she's hopeful, it's not good enough by my standard.

>So... not an angel. Motoko was just shooting at him from the roof too. What would even be the point of an angel vision?
He was also looking up at the airplane afterwards, we know what aircraft represent in Oshii films.
It's indeed pointless to shoehorn angels in people's visions, but it's the Puppetmaster's preferred gimmick, evidently.

>They are cybernetic entities connecting through a computer
Exactly, and since the garbageman's daughter was merely a digital construct, then it means the PM can artificially induce quasi-religious feelings at will, and that Motoko's vision and feelings of awe were probably constructed by the PM.

Also, the angel glows green just like mundane holograms and CG throughout the film. I'm saying that to make sure we agree that this is a departure from the manga's spiritual elements.

>which is the one that is compared to sex.
By Batou yes, but not by Motoko, she finds the notion creepy at this point. It merely foreshadows their second encounter, where the sex part (merging) does happen

Solid point. Can't think of many great reasons as to why she'd want him besides the fact that she seems to have a conscience and wants people who are on board with actually doing some good and fighting corruption/real terrorism. Probably slim pickings from the military world. As to why Togusa would leave, given the state of the world cops are more or less grunts but still have to deal with some heavy shit. Maybe he felt that despite the increased danger, he'd overall be safer working with a better-trained team with WAY better equipment, infosec, information gathering, etc.

Huh, they look way better than the current cartoon adaptation.

honestly most of Oshii's films are connected in some way, he recycles more character archetypes than just that one.

and I think there's a poem in the last chapter that tells a little bit more about it

I gave the film another chance and I liked it a lot.
The talkie bits bring the film down in my opinion, should been more animated with less dialogue and even more ambiguous. Still excellent.

it is, yeah.
It's kind of an action thriller combined with psychological horror, one of Oshii's driest films, but very spectacular.

I just finished reading Orion. I am now in zero doubt that Shirow is, or at least was, one of the greatest cartoonists to ever live. Every page of that shit belongs in a museum. Barely a square inch of page without pure creativity exploding out of it.

Something I noticed from the manga that was very raarely translated to the screen is mold/fungus. Like how the manga safehouse where batou takes motoko's head is covered in mold, and there are multiple bodies throughout the manga that are super decomposed with mushrooms growing out of them. The only anime analogue I can remember is one body in standalone complex having a mushroom on it iirc, and that's kind of a shame because it's a cool visiual
>>
>>290346452
You'd probably like Angel's Egg if you haven't seen it already.
>>
>>290337468
The point of this scene is that she doesn't see her body as "her", it's just a mech suit she's piloting around, but Batou does see her as being both the body and the consciousnes "piloting" it. It's his stance on the Tachikomas in SAC as well and i'm pretty sure he talks about it in the elevator scene in the movie as well.
>>

The 95 character design has got to be the single best one in the entire genre
>>
>>290346520
It is similar in style to Stand Alone Complex, just more 90s gothic techno-noir tone than 00s grounded drama. I would say you would probably like it if you liked SAC.

The amount of obnoxious shitposting designed purely to annoy both "sides" stemming from this is really tiresome.

The people are turned off from this year adaptation even it is the closest thing to the source material possible for a reason. It is too niche and raw and it is hard to like something like this when the first animated version took the character design and idea and sanded off all the rough edges. It tries to be how Hollywood imagines anime to be than actual anime. It is like dorodango in early stage vs finished stage. The early stage is rounded ball of dirt. the finished is round marble (that is still ball of dirt but polished to perfection)
The 2026 version does not "filter the plebs" it filters nothing. Like most early cyberpunk books and manga the manga is very dated and not in a good way it will has less audience. 1995 and 2004 movies are one thing, the manga and 2026 anime are other thing and SAC is another thing that is kind of the middle. Unless you are retard you can't hate either of them but you will like and rank them differently. This is not SAC2045 that was just way Inferior version of SAC that came 20 years earlier and it is not Arise that was just soulless DEI slop version of the idea. This two can be rightfully hated.

Yes I've read the years ago when mangatraders was still around. I even still have files.
I could not finish 2.0 it was one of the worst thing I've seen, pure nonsense.
>>
Funniest thing to me is that when 2026 wraps up its fans will be forced to confront Man-Machine Interface. Science Saru will NEVER adapt it because it's so incredibly ass. So newgen fans of the "true and superior source material manga" will have the read part 2 of the manga to conclude the story Science Saru started adapting.

It's at that point they will truly realize why the manga has never been adapted faithfully until now and why everyone else who has ever done an adaptation has chosen to go their own way and NOT stick to Shirow's idea of what Ghost in the Shell should be.

Shirow himself has also had the good grace to realize he didn't know how to wrap up his own creation and is thankful other people have given it a shot instead. He's the total opposite of someone like Stephen King for example. Complaining that Stanley Kubrick ruined The Shining by cutting out or changing all the parts he wrote that fucking sucked.

Not really. Ending of V1 is a reasonable enough jumping off point that most people won't feel the need to bother.

I love this shot and the one in the OP and the one with Batou standing in the market. It really makes him seem robotic even if its mostly just his demeanour and yet even he is still a contrast to the Major on this front in both ways.

Well, 3 is a "child" of 2501 and Kusanagi, no doubt.
