I would 100000% endorse an anime-original continuation from Saru
>>
The continuity of the soul as traditionally conceived in the Platonist tradition is not dependent on continuity of personality or memory, since the soul was regarded as reincarnating, possibly even into animal bodies. Abrahamic religions generally reject reincarnation so this element of the conception is neglected.

They've really knocked this out of the park and the manga just sucks after the first part. Even if it ended up being mediocre, the production aspect surely will be on point so it's absolutely worth a shot.

What happened to Shirow between volume 1 and 2 of GITS? When I opened the first page of MMI, it felt like fanfiction, both in terms of writing and the art. Probably the only moments when you know that it's really Shirow are black and white pages, probably the only nice part of that whole mess. Shirow should stick to pencils and crayons.

Dedication to the original works they do. The art styles and research involved put SS at the top imo when it comes to accurate adaptations. They're 3 for 3 of the things I've read and while it's a small sample size I can see good things to come.

>The short guy with the mullet who takes her to the Chud calls her Big Sis but it is just Miss in the subtitles and dub.
Why are they so bad at translating this. You'd almost miss that it is implying the Major was very familiar with the area and probably lived there for a time.
>>
>>290502731

that's not true, he says nee-chan
which is a generic way to address a young lady and doesn't imply familiarity
>>The short guy with the mullet who takes her to the Chud calls her Big Sis but it is just Miss in the subtitles and dub.
ane-san is also a generic term
the midget sounds like he knows Motoko, but that comes more from the tone of his voice rather than words
so again, good enough, although "ma'am" is perhaps too formal

I've heard nee-chan/onee-chan used by guys when hitting on women or generally being flirty, it doesn't really make sense to translate it literally in that regard. Not to say that there isn't plenty wrong with Amazon's subtitles.

They real funny thing is that despite all his complaining about the whacky tone, 2026 Shell Squad act more like a team of former war veterans turned glowies than the super serious crew of the 1995 movie. Pretty much any group of people who have to deal with violence and inhumanity on a regular basis become very nonchalant about it and turn to inappropriate humor. They generally act very okay about everything until they can't and start spiraling which is pretty much exactly what happens with the major.

Just got fully caught up on the anime last night.

So how is ol' Motoko gonna wriggle out of this particular jam? It's not enough that she got caught on camera, she got caught on camera putting a bullet in someone's head. Probably worst-case scenario for her profession.

And I'm honestly surprised omnipresent video surveillance hasn't bitten Section 9 in the ass before now, you'd think it would have come up.

i liked it. we see 2501 becoming sentient, and self-aware of it. with none of the researchers taking it seriously at first, and then serious enough to intend to shut its (her?) sentience down with an "upgrade", it's obvious why it'd decide to escape through the net. plus while in the 1995 movie project 2501 was originally an american-made AI gone rogue, the show establishes it as made in japan by section 6. or was that just section 6 hiding their tracks in the movie? either way, aramaki had no qualms about letting them get away with 2501 then.

Yeah it's a pretty good way to separate her from the movie version who seems to enjoy toying with people out of some sense of superiority. And is also a dude.

Here it's made clear that 2501 came up with that plan because she likes to play strategy games and because it wouldn't involve directly murdering someone.

>the movie version who seems to enjoy toying with people out of some sense of superiority
movie 2501 seems very malicious in that it tries to both escape its pursuers and "achieve life" or "achieve a legacy" that will outlive it by any means necessary. that leaves the movie's ending up for interpretation a little bit. did a sentient program really merge with motoko's soul? did it generate its own soul, and merge with another? or was it just yet another, final, takeover of another person, like a parasite having found its final host?

either way, 2501 from the new show just wants recognition as a valid sentient being equal to that of a human. that's why she asserted herself by saying
>I am a ghost!
it would also make sense story-wise why it'd try to stick with motoko now, because motoko is the only one who truly believed that.
>>
>>290513384
>And I'm honestly surprised omnipresent video surveillance hasn't bitten Section 9 in the ass before now, you'd think it would have come up.
That's because it is a setup. The news was running the story minutes after it happened with her full name. Someone with intel was prepositioned to monitor this raid.
>Don't see how it's going to be a problem at all, pretty sure they can kill anybody and get away with it by saying it was a terrorist just like IRL
Two big problems were that they were underage and their weapon didn't appear on camera. The real issue though is that high ranking people wanted this to cause a stink and are putting it in front of the average citizen. Tons of talking heads and politicians are fanning the flames, not stomping them out. That is the real difference between something being glossed over like the genocide in Sudan and something being not like Palestine.

In the movie the AI was also made by Section 6, the Puppet Master was presumed to be an American criminal because all of its crimes were perpetrated over there until the latest one with the interpreter. The reason Section 6 freaked the fuck out and attacked Section 9 to get the Puppet Master back immediately was because Section 9 was going to take a detailed official statement from the AI before returning it. That statement would have detailed the various secret crimes and acts of war Section 6 was perpetrating against the US without authorization or oversight. Since Section 9 is a government watchdog organization that answers to the PM, that is very, very bad for them.

right. i assume 2501 worked as intended in the american empire, manipulating and subduing strategic individuals, until section 6 wanted to reel it back in and it began fucking shit up in japan. may have fucked shit up in the american empire, too, if they managed to detect its meddlings. we aren't given too many details unfortunately.
>That statement would have detailed the various secret crimes and acts of war Section 6 was perpetrating against the US without authorization or oversight.
hard to tell which one would be worse, the reaction of japan's PM or america's military lmfao. on the other hand, they could have saved their asses by denying 2501's claims, since no one would accept that it's an actually sentient being. (that's a BIG maybe though... the suspicions are bad enough.) that's why motoko insisted on wanting to dive into it, to find out what it really is.

I'm reading Appleseed and this shit is so confusing, tell me if I'm getting it right:
The old biodroid council is importing humans from the badlands into Olympus which pisses off Athena, the second in command of biodroid security after the director, because humans commit 50% of violent crimes despite only being 20% of the Olympus population. She sends a bunch of goons in a shitty tank to kill or abduct Hitomi, but they get wiped. Next she somehow slips crack cocaine into the food of humans who work for Hitomi, making them chimp out and try to steal something from the supercomputer for reasons not yet disclosed as of the end of volume 2 but they all get executed by the cops and Duenan or whatever her name is.
Duenan then joins SWAT which happens to consist of the worst dregs of humanity and former glowies (same thing really) bunched up together, then immediately transferred to ESWAT because Athena wants to keep an eye on her. Her cyborg fuckbuddy is kept in the hospital in the meantime because Athena wants to isolate the humans who should all fuck off back to Mexico and leave the biodroids alone. The old biodroid council in the meantime decides that the only way the human problem can be solved is by making them all submit to a completely optional chemical castration but Athena locks them up because the supercomputer is going to wipe the biodroid cattle if it rebels against its human masters but it doesn't matter because she also allowed them to upload the proposal into the supercomputer which hacks the biodroids to arm the weapon platforms that the biodroid council approved and which are directly controlled by the supercomputer which is going to kill the biodroids if they rebel against the humans.
This is too long so I have to make another comment, I'm praying I didn't fuck up the spoiler

>completely optional

>>
>>290502534

>>

Next, the secret humans in ESWAT who are monitoring the biodroids in case they rise up against the humanity decide that they must save the biodroids from getting wiped by the supercomputer so they bust Hitomi out of ESWAT jail and use her to shut down Gaia without Athena ever learning of this function of Hitomi even though literally everybody else but her seem to know that.

The ass shot is directly relevant to the construction of 2501's ego though.

First she gets to experience the taste of coffee
She sees that her proxy's appearance is undesirable because the waitress looks at him with disgust
She sees that Motoko's ass IS desirable and that Motoko, like her, would like more freedom but is being restrained by the boss (Motoko gets smacked, Nakamura gives 2501 orders) so she immediately identifies with Motoko while also recognizing her body as desirable

So, she begins to desire becoming like Motoko as a source of emotional validation, because nobody at the lab takes her seriously even after she makes efforts to fit in (notice how food is omnipresent, and she drinks coffee in front of them before asking if she looks human)

this culminates with her fusing with Motoko
>>
I almost do hope we get a MMI anime so I can shitpost and say 'Oshii saved you from this'
I think that would be funny
>>
>>290517802
>>290517646
I'll also add that this feeds into the "there never was a body" line because her attempt to fit in involved experiencing individuality through a body, but nobody in the lab seemed to care

This is important, because that differenciates 2501's notion of individuality from the human version of individuality

2501 therefore recognizes the value of individuality but also knows that the collective large-scale level is important because she's been copying and deleting herself over and over again this whole time. Essentially, she's more like a species.

But she wants to be active on an individual level too which is why she needs to fuse with Motoko

Nobody would sit through hours of Motoko-11 telling her agents to do this and that with the virus and the decot or whatever the fuck, but there's an action-packed cyber spy story in there somewhere, with a trippy ending that could be pretty sweet on screen (again, dropping a lot of the expository dialogue and letting the images speak for themselves).

One of the basic structural problems with Ghost in the Shell is that technology important in one episode or arc often seems forgotten in others.
Still it has a much more coherent setting than much other episodic SF.
>>
>>290518701
I've given it some thought and as far as i can tell, the technology that's unique to each chapter is either tied to a specific source (for example the hypno-voice which was probably given to the proxy by S6, or Koyl's brain implants) or wouldn't be particularly useful in another chapter (for example the drone in the latest episode)

but I could be convinced otherwise

Other technologies like micromachines are re-used throughout

I have something important to submit to your appreciation SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE SHOW:

In the anime, Dr Willis uses the "People change" line as sophistry to convince 2501 to get deleted with the "update".

However, 2501 will use that same line on Motoko later (AFTER having already convinced her mind you) [/ spoiler]

The big difference is that when Dr Willis says it, He doesn't believe that 2501 has become sentient. He's operating under a materialistic mindset (remember he doesn't take ghostlines seriously) which means he views the shift between sentience and non-sentience (or more generally, between identity and alterity) as illusory, because everything is ultimately just matter.

In this continuity, he is proven wrong.

More importantly, he's using this line of argument as an excuse to SUBTRACT elements from 2501's identity. That's one of the reasons why she says Nakamura (acting through Willis) doesn't recognize the value of individuality. It's a destructive transformation.

Once 2501 has become a ghost and experiences karmic continuity between all beings, "people change etc" is also trivial but for a completely different reason: the essence of the individual is determined by their position in the Net (their relationship to other beings) which means that change does not inherently compromise identity, as long as sentience is preserved alongside those connexions and the memories associated with them. She's trying to ADD things to Motoko's identity.

I think this is a massively important because without this distinction, we would have no way to know for sure if Motoko's transformation was destructive or additive.

And of course the movie adaptation doesn't make this distinction, neither does Innocence.

Does that sound accurate to you guys?

>Don't you think that reproduction, even moreso than marriage or sex, requires explicit consent?
That's obviously more clear which is usually good, but I don't think it's necessary, especially when one side was already explicit and the other repeatedly acknowledges him.

>Especially if it's presented as an oral question rather than as a statement?
"I have something to ask of you" is a statement. All it does is alert whoever you are addressing that you're about to ask them a question.

>Or do you mean that mere contact with the Puppetmaster automatically induces religious bliss that prompts people to perceive it as an angel?
For both the PM and daughter, nobody is perceiving them as an angel, but they give off an angelic impression. I am not suggesting this induces any particular feeling. Based on my interpretation of the manga footnote, after initially seeing the network as light, Motoko's final attempt at processing a vast and unfamiliar system is to perceive it in the shape of a person (the angel). I am arguing that the PM and photo are connected to that system, so they are associated with an avatar of it.

>Once again I'm not saying Motoko is being reasonable.
Motoko is partially reasonable. She has a goal of escaping her circumstances, and a willingness to gamble her life to reach that goal through diving the PM, as she previously gambled by choosing to solo the spider (Her conversation with Batou suggests she understood the danger and did not overestimate her own ability). She is not wrong to take risky measures if they are the only way to reach her goal. However, she does not seem to take Batou into account when making such decisions, assuming he cannot help her.
>>
File: Capture.png (3 MB, 1740x932)
3 MB PNG
>>290482577
Motoko wants to escape the limitations of human life: a self/ghost chained to a physical form and social identity. She initially does not know how to realize this ideal and can only pursue it in fantasies, as she believes the self and body are inseparable. However, as she learns about the PM, she recognizes him as a self that is not connected to a particular body, and is therefore free from the restraints she struggles against. She speculates that as a cyborg she is fundamentally like the PM. Extrapolating from her desires, I think her apparent similarity to the PM causes her to hope she can become as unbound as he is. She is connecting with him for the purpose of emulating him.

When she dives him, the immaturity of her one-sided ideal is soon apparent. The Puppeteer has the same evolutionary ambitions, and desires her as much as she has him. This is because his incorporeal form is constrained as well. The freedom she seeks cannot be achieved by an individual in either form. To overcome all limitations, they must enter a permanent partnership, fusing their separate selves into a greater whole.
>>
>>290534479
So if I understand correctly, your assessment is that she believes
-that the Puppetmaster is not a supernatural being
-that it is sentient and retains its identity each time it deletes and copies itself
-that it might be willing to share this ability with her
-that being able to delete and copy her mind would sate her desire for power/novelty/freedom/fulfillment without compromising her identity

And you also assess that gaining this ability would not be sufficient for her to achieve those things, because the Puppetmaster's own concerns would presumably apply to her as well, and she would inevitably end up craving death like it does anyway.

Is that what you mean?

>>
>>290534392
>I am arguing that the PM and photo are connected to that system, so they are associated with an avatar of it.
The nature of that connexion is an important thing to clarify.
Do you mean that the garbageman’s perception of his daughter was an unintended side-effect of being indirectly connected with the Net? If that’s what you mean, then why didn’t he also perceive his wife that way? Or real people for that matter?

And, since you agree that the Puppetmaster’s body has angelic features, I also want to know if you think that’s a deliberate choice from the Puppetmaster, or if it’s just a directorial choice that doesn’t exist in-universe.

>"I have something to ask of you" is a statement. All it does is alert whoever you are addressing that you're about to ask them a question.
True, I phrased that wrong, I should have said oral request.
It seeks an agreement at first, because it knows that there’s a chance she might refuse, because agreeing to ghost-diving isn’t the same as agreeing to reproduction (unless she somehow thought it would request that all along, but we both agree that’s not the case)
However, section 6 soon shows up, and now the stakes have escalated. But she doesn’t know it yet, because her senses are frozen.
The Puppetmaster can’t afford to press her for an answer, or else she might realize something is wrong and offer resistance, but it can’t afford to wait for a positive answer either. Jamming S6’s targeting systems can only go so far.

So urgency is a much more obvious explanation for why it wouldn’t wait for explicit consent, as opposed to it following the standard of consent you’re proposing.
>>
>>290534392

>She is not wrong to take risky measures if they are the only way to reach her goal. However, she does not seem to take Batou into account when making such decisions, assuming he cannot help her.
Right so for her decision to be reasonable at all, it needs to fulfill several criteria
- correct risk assessment
- positive outcome
- no chance to get a positive outcome any other way

It’s actually a very tricky thing to figure out. That’s why I’m trying to figure out exactly what she wants, what she expects, and what she stands to lose (as opposed to what she thinks she stands to lose), rather than retroactively justifying her choices (or lack thereof) by assuming that the ending was positive just because what’s left of Motoko happens to be relatively chill.

>but I don't think it's necessary, especially when one side was already explicit and the other repeatedly acknowledges him.
That sounds frankly bizarre. I don't think I can follow you on that, and I don't see any unambiguous signs that Oshii/Ito espouse that standard either, as explained above.

Gremlin mode should be mandatory.

Is GUNNM the last OG cyberpunk series still going? Both Shirow and Oshii haven't produced anything of note in the last two decades
>>
>>290547765
Being shorter than 6’
>>
>>290554868
It may be still going on, but the original GUNM is pretty much dead. The manga went full retard in the Last Order and never recovered.
>>

Technically Oshii has put effort into making new shows and movies, though whether any of them are good is another matter.

I have hope for the new votoms
>>
>>290557190
I have a bet running that it will be the same story as usual (same fucking setup as Stray Dog, P2, GitS, even fucking Talking Head)

but this time it's exciting because Oshii has become way more pro-military in recent years, so it could realistically go any number of ways.
>>
>>290547529
SAC has them explicitly though.
>>290552399
Anon, she is very much putting on a show.
>>
>>290557925
Is she?
She just looks nonplussed by 2501's attempt to be friendly.
>You just look like a robot.
Which is a pretty rude thing to say to a girl who's trying to fit in.
>>
>>290558198
She's showing off how sexy she is vs. 2501.

You think we got a Becky/Stacy dynamic then huh?

Well joke's on her, 2501 ended up being a total smokeshow.
>>
2501 is her body count.

Modern anime is so shit. I got crunchy a few months ago and so far I've only liked Chainsaw man. The new Ghost in the Shell one is mid as fuck too.
>>
>>290558490
You mean she had cybersex with many people before section 6 reeled her in?
>>
>>290558630
That sounds about right.
>>
>>290558364
Sure, but she still went for a blonde bitch body just like her big sister. Motoko wasn't her only inspiration.
>>
>>290558690
As expected of the imouto who thinks she has something to prove.
>>
>they censored the isntreal mention
I still think this season is amazing but this is extremely disappointing.

I felt the opposite about CSM. I find Denji annoying.
