I didnt watch the Reze arc movie when it was out in theaters but I always liked season 1 so I recently started reading the manga. I can see why everyone would love the movie so much. The manga has been very enjoyable so far. I know people shit on the direction of season 1 but the more cinematic style they went for feels somewhat appropriate with how cinematic some of the panel layouts are. Plus the paneling and some of the visual storytelling in the paneling is very good. Like I like how Denji is a kid who grew up with nothing and didnt have an education, you understand why he's that kind of "dumb" brash shounen protag but he isnt dumb, he has moments of introspection. He's going through what you would go through as someone with no life experience. I like how Aki is the "rival"/couterpart male character who everyone can tell is weak and doesnt really feel like theyll be able to keep up and the story itself addresses it and makes him confront it. It just feels like a comparatively actually well written story with something to say and characters that have something to them and not an excuse for 500 episodes of fight scenesend essay

Part 2 really fumbled the ball when it stopped trying to be about Asa/Yoru body possession hijinks trying to adjust to life about 1 arc in. That was the hook and it didn't go anywhere. But I guess late part 1 had a similar trajectory, it stopped being about Denji himself and his changing circumstances and it started angling for hype trains. That's what catapulted CSM into the mainstream so maybe it made sense in terms of money but Fujimoto was better with the other approach to writing.
