So I've downloaded the 1939 wizard of oz movie. The 75th anniversary blueray. Idk if I should bother looking for like an an actual "original" screening or something. Idk if that even exists. I feel like this 1080p version is probably close to accurate of what was seened in theaters back then. As far as I'm aware this resolution nonsense only exists for tvs and stuff, things back then were shot on film and projected so the resolution isn't really how you talk about them. Im other news I just took a nap and had a weird time waking up. A couple years ago I had a terrible stomach virus, and kept waking up and falling asleep every 15 minutes at one point. Every time I would have a dream in the same setting, a sort of complex building where all operations were done to sustain my overall wellbeing and existence. I had to have woken up and fallen back asleep over 20 times, and every dream was in that place. I felt a unique calm and tranquility every time I was there, even as the night progressed and my nausea settled down. Have truly never experienced anything quite like it and I reckon it helped get me through the night.

In other words, it's funny what our brain does with all of the thoughts and information its presented with, and I love clussy.

All in all, it was a solid movie but I'm not sure I have all that much to say about it desu. It was fun and whimsical. Story was straightforward. There were some questionable things like the pacing towards the end and how the witch was killed just with water lol (my assumption is that anything doro would have done to her would have killeded her because of the slippers) but all in all it was fun. Some good comedy, fun effects and sets. The music was nice, though I felt they front-ended that alot with munchkin town and it went on too long. They just wanted to show off all the costumes and choreography, which was impressive and probably even moreso at the time. But all these various little faggots stepping forward to thank doro kinda started to drag on. My favorite song was the tin man's if I had a heart and my least favorite was the last one with the lion's king of the jungle. It just kinda felt out of place in the moment before meeting the wizard and it doesn't help that that was the last song of the movie. I like the scarecrow probably the most of the three companions. Just like his costume design alot. The movie as a whole was pretty beautiful all around, too. Nice cinematography and use of color
I genuinely feel like an anime adaption of this would be really fun

As for how it relates to himawari circus, there are some direct comparisons you can make.
For example,

>mizuka needed to rediscover her love of the circus, meaning finding a heart. You can also say that she's dorothy looking for her home, of course, but that can be true of every himawari

And all of these were kinda within them the whole time, which was the main theme of the movie. As for Maria's dream coming true, the reality is that it's already true as long as the sunflower troupe continue to love eachother as a family.
Beyond that, there isn't TOO much that can be directly compared. There is, of course, the color scheme with yellow being the primary color of the himawari circus as potentially a refrence to the yellow brick road, and mizuka's red dress being like dorothy's shoes, but at this point it's a huge stretch lol

It was also amazing direction to anime this in this colorless style, signaling that their world was about to fall apart and lose all meaning if they had lost eachother. Such a great contrast to the usual bright color palete. This, i think, is the best drama the show had and it should have stuck to these lower stake, smaller story backstories as drama rather than focus the entire second half on Maria's injury/illness.

i fucking love francois so much. It was a great move to combine his story with the aoi and akane. It really is a shame that he gets relegated to small appearances from here on out and never really gets a proper spotlight. But that's just another issue with the whole show just always cheaping out on animation man. The concept, the setting, and the girls are so fucking strong man, but the show just doesn't have enough to build on that foundation. It deserved more budget and more skilled animators. This show needed a kyoani, a madhouse, hell, I'd even take a PA works level of treatment

Before this episode, many anons were saying that mizuka was treating ouka badly because of her constant refusal to train her. Even the show called her out on it. At the time I speculated that her backstory was that
>she hates the circus and her father because her mother died and her father took her away from home afterwards. So she lost her mother and her home and mentally associates that with the circus and her PARAMECIUM
>thus, every time she sees ouka flying, she sees her past trauma and it's hard for her to even understand why she doesn't want to train ouka specifically despite being her friend outside of training
I thought that was intresting, but we know now that's not the case for her backstory

In general, I think the backstory we did get for her was serviceable, it makes sense that she "hates the circus" because her dad shut it down (I now speculate that he shut it down out of heartbreak from losing his wife, not because he felt he was past his prime (I am ready to be narratively dissapointed again, thoughever lmao)) and she felt like she was betraying her old family by loving her new one, but I think it was too cheap and too easy to have her suddenly love it again just by perfroming once because she never got to perform in the past. I think there were a whole lot of ways her backstory could have been improved, either with small changes or with broad strokes

Nanami's character, I feel, is also kindof all over the place and that's mostly due to how she's handled in Maria's story

I pretty much agree. I think that of the clown dies it's going to severely harm my opinion overall, as it feels way too brutal for the show. It just feels tonedeaf if they do that. It was at this point that I went to the in irl life himwari field and took some lovely photo. I have a great appreciation for these flowers in real life now due to that trip out of town, and honestly, I would not have made that trip out of town this year if not for this show. My parents brought it up and while I do love traveling with them to places, I also love canceling plans and staying home and watching anime, which was about to happen that weekend because the weather was almost bad. But I forced the trip through because I knew that there may not have been another chance this season and thus this year. I needed to see these sunflowers because of this anime this year and I'm glad I did

I really really liked their creativity here and thought them adapting the wizard of oz to bridge the gap between them and blue rose was a really inspired move, both in universe on mizuka's part, AND in a meta narrative writing sense. This is what I mean by there still being great things even in this second half of the show.

This show doesn’t really teach you anything about the circus and most of the performances are barely animated. They are just using stills for the most part. I’ve learned nothing about the circus from this anime it could the show could’ve been about literally anything. That one is one of my favorites, too. It's hard to really narrow them down. Obviously I'm biased and love all my collages equally. I love the contrast between the solid color shot of maria and the virbant multi colors directly underneath. There's actually alot of thought that I try to put into collages and the composition is often hard to really get right. Some are going to end up being better than others inevitably. Not all of them will end up telling a story, but the way I see it is I try to capture the feeling of the episode or scene most of all

Bonus observation
Mizuka's apple theivery in the francois episode may have been a reference to this scene where dorothy almost stole apples from the trees that were alive lol

I have not read it. I assume one of the changes was the color of the slippers
Mizuka has them as silver, which I assume is what the book describes them as. I assume the movie made them ruby red because the wanted to take advantage of the color on screen and ruby is more striking and vibrant than silver. The contrast between them and the yellow brick road is also greater than it would have been had they been silver. Probably a good change
Does anyone want to spoil where the red brick road leads? I'm not, at this point, particularly itching to read the books of which there are apparently dozens. Nor will I watch any modern western slop adaptions of the story
