It behooves me to say... last thread two of us campers were a bit... overzealous.. with our posting! I and another anon overcrowded the image dumping and unfortunately it lead to discussions being hindered in the episode 2 and 3 thread. Infact, by the end of it the image limit had been reached and there were still 50 posts left before the bump limit. Some anons said they liked the enthusiasm, but others said it was too much and felt more like a blog than a rewatch discussion thread. I can understand that and hope to course correct!
I have many screenshot, but will limit myself to posting only my absolute favorites, ones that I specifically have something to say about, or the stitches I've made. An anon asked in the last thread what the best subs arePersonally, I'm using the [BD]yuru camp batch, which has ToishY and nedragrevev. I use the ToishY specifically. The typesetting is good on it and it gets pretty detalied in some shots of the signs and stuff. This batch also has all of the extra OVAs, as far as I'm aware, and includes the movie, of course. I assume these are fansubs, but perhap the nedgradvevsvqvev one is from the bluerays? Idk. Anyways, these are what I'm using. Here's an example of the typesetting they do. Quite good. Very sovlful.

If I've healed up it should be fine, but this will be the day I'm testing that. Lower body and core I'm already back to 100%, so I guess I wasn't that atrophied in the last few months. Comfy little cafe place out in the middle of nowhereThis scene ran into that issue again where there were a couple of other stitches I could have made, but the pan wasn't long enough to really add too much value to the picture and it ends up looking better as a still frame in the normal ratio
This frame, for example, extends to the left and right some more, but I didn't bother with it because i felt the full shot does add any more than what's already on screen in this middle-pan frame. I try not to skip over stitches on purpose, but sometimes I just don't see the purpose behind some of them! Sorry. Anyways, before anon goes ahead with his webms for ep 5, I'll share my thoughts on 4. First time we've got an actual "set up" episode before the proper camping. Last arc was told out of order. Probably in order to get to the action faster. I think that decision served well during that arc, but here it was good to see everything chronologically. I'm glad that the OAC is taking their camping very seriously. Camping is serious buisness and they cannot be underprepared. We saw in the previous episodes that Nadeshiko went dangerously into the fray>the first time almost getting stranded by lake motosu>the second time it was a very spontaneous decision, and despite bringing a futon and food, she was underprepares without a tent, without a heat method, wearing indoor pajamas. Etc.It's good to see them making a list and being thorough with it. They got jobs before hand to pay for their gear, they went on a little montage to get prepared. It felt like a good build up to their first camping trip
Nadeshiko doesn't mind that Fuji-san is watching her. In fact, she kinda likes it.

Obviously this is a YAMANASHI show for YAMANASHI girls, but her first instinct is to go as far as she can and see new sights. She must have all but exhausted all the campsites close to home, even if some of them are in her rotation as favorites. It's also clear to us, by giving it such focus, that Shimarin loves traveling, perhaps not as much as camping, but definitely quite close. For her, the journey is as fun as the destination. Finding neat stops along the way, simply driving out on the open road, rin loves it all
I respect this guy's hustle a lot. Also, this was the anime that taught me about onsen eggs, and I really want to try them sometime. Basically a poached egg in-shell, and then these are deep-fried. Both her and Nadershiko were heavily motivated to get to that campground, Nadeshiko just didn't know what she was doing and was purely Fuji-motivated. But like any stray puppy, you feed her once and she's your pet for life. I agree with you that by making it more physically taxing that first trip out (and in a different sort of way, this third camping trip for Rin), you can see her seriousness a lot more.

And speaking of biking, when I was in Norway driving to our next stop, we followed this pair of bikers on the open country road for what must have been an hour. Motercycles always seemed too dangerous for my taste, but this is the kind of riding that would be very very cool. Long stretches of empty open road just gliding along. I'm sure there's some form of biker's high that Rin gets even on her silly little moped that can barely clock 30mph!

And now for the grand finale. This one took a bit of work. It's 5 separate clips, concatenated, using nothing but ffmpeg. I didn't want to double encode so I scripted a multithreaded loop through settings to find the best quality I could fit in the 4MB limit, and do it without thrashing my SSD with unnecessary writes. In fact, all done in RAM until saving the final webm.On the plus side, multi-clip webms like this will be much easier and quicker for me to make going forward, I can reuse this code with just a few changes (timestamps, etc.) and it'll just handle it all for me, what used to be a lot of manual and annoying work.

Takes a little practice and experience to figure out what works and what doesn't, but as long as you have bigger and bigger things to burn as you go, you'll keep it alive long enough to give yourself time to manage things without constantly adding stuff.My preferred tinder is the cotton that you can buy from any drug store, or found in pill bottles sometimes to prevent them shaking around before you get them. You can also collect lint from your clothes dryer. Keep some of that in a ziploc bag when you go camping. The cotton balls can also be soaked with vaseline. A few twigs on top of that (dry) and you'll definitely get started even from just a hot spark.I like to have some smaller kindling to start with and then go to the full sized kindling once that catches. Kind of an extra stage, so there's a bit more progression. The proper sized kindling will burn decently fast but also hot enough to set the fuel on fire. But you still need enough flame first to get the proper sized kindling to burn.Then fuel, start small, again, and work up to the proper big pieces like in your photo there. Found something to sayMy biggest takeaway from this episode was that you can't let yourself feel too down when things don't work out how you want them to. Rin wanted to go to an onsen, she couldn't. She wanted to see a view of the city, it was foggy. That one-two punch is enough to make anyone sad and almost regret the entire journey. It would have been really easy for her to get bitter and just go straight to the campsite in a sour mood. But instead she chose to put in a little extra effort and walk half a kilometer not knowing if it would be worth it
And she found an excellent view as her reward, immediately restoring her spirits. Don't let little things going wrong get you so upset you end up ruining your own time. Things will work out in the end if you take the time to look on the bright side and remind yourself that you still have stuff to look forward to!

Last stitch of the episode. Nadeshiko is so cute in this outfit (she is cute in every outfit!)love her silly hat and her puffy pink jacket and her big oversized scarf. Their outfits are always so great bros
Another thing that I liked from this episode was the growing freindship between Nadeshiko and Rinchan. Even when they're far apart, they grow closer together. For one, it definitely seems like Rin made the choice to try to go to an onsen because of Nadeshiko's texts saying they went on their trip. It's possible she was planning on it anyways, as she is a seasoned camper and she did bring a towel, but the shoe definitely made it look like it was pink yuru's influence. After that, they directedly shared their views with eachother at nighttime, something that nadeshiko was determined to do even without aki and aoi helping her through the scary dark forest. And rin, seeing her determination, went and grabbed a photo, too. This connection they made even when miles apart brought them closer together as friends
There is also the not so subtle mount fuji in both of their sightlines, which shows us the scale of distance so we can understand just how far rin traveled and how separated they are, but even with that distance, they still have mount fuji grounding and connecting them, geologically, emotionally, narrativelly. Mount Fuji was there when they made that initial connection, and he is here when they send eachother their love from miles away.Beautiful episode.
Cant think of too much else to say but this. While these episodes were great, in my personal opinion, they're not as great as the upcoming ones. I think the next arc, episodes 6 & 7 might be my absolute favorite of the entire show. There should be a good coal bed already underneath that.You don't just pile up a bunch of wood and expect it to burn, because it not about the solids. A wood fire is actually burning gases. When those gases mix, oxygen and the gases released by hot wood, in the presence of heat, causes a chemical reaction releasing more heat, and that causes the wood to break down and release more gas which can combust with oxygen. Bigger wood masses have more of that potential gas release, but they take a lot more heat to get that out-gassing process working. First the water content has to be boiled off, because water is a notorious heat sink; it doesn't really go higher than boiling temperature, and the temperature needs to go higher than that to begin out-gassing. Smaller stuff burns more easily because there's less volume per surface area, so heat can enter faster and has less water to boil away before the rest of the wood can start to release that gas. But it has less gas to release.Building a fire is all about staying ahead of the curve, ensuring you're able to release enough new gas from the wood without turning too much of the thermal energy into steam.Eventually, you get to the coal phase, where all the volatiles have left just (mostly) carbon behind, and the carbon does burn as a solid, and without the strong convection forces that bring so much of the heat away from the fuel. Coals radiate, and coals will boil the water out of even big logs pretty easily. From that point on, you're fighting ash coverage which blocks the oxygen from getting at fresh carbon.

But let the sides stay as open as possible to draw in more oxygen, you won't lose much heat from there.Third, the goal is to get to coal. Coal radiates in all directions, that's your heat source for survival and what will get your larger fuel to boil off its water and start releasing gas and becoming more coal.Fourth, you want to make sure gas can still get into your coal, once you have it. That carbon is super porous, it's basically the skeleton of the wood. But as it burns you get ash from all the other minerals that don't burn. Give your coals a good stir every now and again, break up that ash layer and let in more oxygen.That's my impromptu campfire tutorial. Happy camping!

If you only cover the coals with water, there may still be porous carbon that's isn't in contact with the water and thus maintaining a slow burn. Kill the heat and the oxygen, and be thorough about it via stirring. All that will be left is fuel.

I look at where trails are, look for water, and then see if I can plan a hike off-trail to get where I think might be a good spot. Not too far from water, not too close to where I expect other people to be. Forested, so I can collect firewood, etc. Then I go on a scouting trip, map and compass, figure out changes in my route I'll need to take. I log it all on a waterproof writing pad, do the usual orienteering type stuff. I'm a former boy scout and learned this as a kid.Sometimes I will camp very near trails, but "stealth camp". I disguise my site, hide my tent and activities. Don't use a fire and choose a spot that's very hard to see from the trail.In terms of danger, I do see bears and moose sometimes. I don't worry about the bears, generally, but the moose are scary and actually the biggest threat. I worry most of all about other people, or stumbling into somebody's grow op and tripping some trap or something. Haven't done that yet, but I worry.Biggest danger is probably falling or twisting an ankle. I treat even small streams with a lot of respect, same with climbs of any sort. Go slow, don't get hurt. There's always a better way to get past an obstacle. I was an EMT so I have good first aid skills at least.

>>291198706This image reminded me of something, there's a pretty cool fire style known as the star fire. Assuming it's a safe place to do so and you aren't going to set all your surroundings on fire, you can use long logs in a star formation kinda like that, and slowly push them in towards the center bit by bit as they start to burn. You can really control the heat and light that way, and not burn all your wood too quickly. You won't have a proper fire pit and it won't be too easy to manage if it's quite windy (hence the safety warning) but if you're in a good spot it's a nice way of doing it. You start your fire in the center, as usual, with the logs lying around it pointed inward like that image. Once you got some coals going and it's heated up in the center, just start slowly feeding the logs in end-first. You can keep a small fire going a very long time that way, and you don't need to cut the wood into smaller lengths.If you can dig a little pit in the center, and start there with your tinder and kindling, and sort of hang the logs over the sides of that pit, that works pretty well, keeping the coals inside that pit. It's very controlled and steady fuel burning, good for cooking. You "turn up" the heat whenever you push a log in a bit more.Anyway, not what these girls did at all, but that sort of arrangement is what it looks like, just with much longer logs and only burning in the center at one end.

Another thing I noticed is that we spent so much of this arc away from the actual campsites, with rin's traveling and cooking and cafe, and with the OAC at the onsen, because they actually don't have much to do at the campsite itself. They don't have equipment to screw around with, they dont even have chairs lmao this is their first actual camping trip, and even though they've got a fire and got a hotpot, they're actually very spartan here. So it makes sense that most of the arc was about other things. They need time to build up their equipment!!

EMS (with a certain amount of wilderness rescue theory, not practice), former boy scout, lots of practice in my backyard throughout the years. And at the end of the day, I'm just hiking on the easiest route to a fairly flat area with water nearby that would make for a good campsite. It's not like I'm hanging off the side of a mountain cliff face or out in a desert. My climate is very survivable with fairly standard gear below the higher elevations. If I don't break a leg so bad I can't splint it and walk myself out, then ultimately I just need to pick a reasonable direction (and I always know where that is, that's part of planning) and walk myself out and I will get back to civilization before I die of thirst or hypothermia.As for my camp itself, I like to wander around looking at stuff, listen, maybe carve something outta wood or build something if there's enough daylight left and I've already got all my firewood. Mostly I just take it all in, have deep thoughts, hopefully see some birds.
I figured id do a rewatch as well and catch up. I get the comfy aspects and that they cant have her change outfits often, but I cant get over how bad it would feel to cycle in this getup..Thick overcoat so that you get even sweatier inside but fingerless gloves so your fingers are still freezing against the wind. At least the big poncho lets air circulate under it towards your core but she's still wearing a jacket underneath. And no hat so her ears are freezing as well.It simply doesn't match. If its cold enough for so many layers and thick clothes, its too cold for fingerless gloves and no face/ear protection.
