It started as Greek mythology fanfic at the beginning and snowballed from there. But even here it's explained that though Sailor Moon inherited the greatest light of the Galaxy Cauldron, it only became as such because she kept defeating incarnations of Chaos throughout time as well as winning the affection and power of her Star-Seed-having lover and friends. All of them were naturally seeking each other out through the galaxy, and Sailor Moon's power grew to become a beacon both for fellow Star Seeds and Chaos itself.

I love that Galaxia is the one who gives Sailor Moon reason to believe that not everything will or has to end the way Chibi Chibi suggests it does. She believed that she was scum that failed in her grand plans, yet Usagi embracing her in the end is what ultimately gave Galaxia back some hope for the future, which in turn influences Usagi's final decision.

>>291214410
Like Usagi says of the stars that sought each other out, they're able to mutually reassure each other within their battle and soothe each other's loneliness.

Just in case you need a refresher’s course:

>Star Seeds = Soul Gems
>Chaos = Entropy
>Galaxy Cauldron = Kyubey
>”Being a Senshi is suffering” = “Being Meguca is suffering”
>Galaxia = Homura (sorta, not a perfect fit)
>Sailor Cosmos = Godoka

The Sailor Moon manga really was the first actual deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre and was what resulted in the genre turning into yuritroon seinenslop.
>>
>>291234085
not gonna lie, for being the supposed monumental genre-defining work that looms over all magical girl manga, it was very underwhelming. the art is gorgeous, but my main gripe is that most of it is just plain boring to read, it's the same plot beats very arc. my favorite chapters were the ones that focused on the girls or and had a more comedic tone, but they felt so few and far between. this last chapter actually illustrates my gripes perfectly, up until here >>291233753 it's meh, then the epilogue does a 180 and has funny jokes, character interactions, more energy, even the art seems better because it fills the whole page. every chapter had at least one page like that, so it's frustrating to know the author could be doing more of it.

I guess I just wanted more Sailor V, to be honest.

yuribait ending, also note the ships:
>Reinako being paralleled with HaruMichi in the Galaxy Cauldron
>During the actual wedding it’s again Haruka/Michiru, Reinako, and Mako/Ami holding hands there
>all wearing wedding dresses, all vowing to stay together forever
>Mamoru is the only token male allowed because he’s supposed to serve as the self-insert for the yuritroon audience who want to imagine inserting themselves into the yuri sandwich because yurifaggotry is ultimately just another form of male gaze waifufag haremfaggotry fanservice at the end of the day
Would really like to see that one antiyuri schizo try and debate this ending. It is literal CANON that the manga ends with Usagi marrying her entire yuri harem and they all vow devote themselves to her and each other while swearing off men entirely.

>>291233770
>inb4 “b-b-b-b-but Parallel Sailor Moon shows the Inners all married with husbands!!!”
Non-canon spinoff, about as canon as that one Madoka spinoff that has Homura married to Madoka’s brother, besides they’re all faceless men anyways so it doesn’t count.

>So, what did you think?
I already wrote up all my negative feelings weeks ago, so I'm not going to repost them here. However, since then I actually thought this manga was pretty good. I liked getting to know the characters. I still think Sailor Moon's powers being nondescript "whatever is needed in the moment" powered by "believing in yourself hard enough" is a bit silly, but this is mahou shojou so it doesn't really bother me.
I'm going to second >>291234395 in that I don't really get why this was such a genre-defining hallmark of anime. I see a lot of what it does that all other mahou shoujo do, but I just don't think it's that good. However, if the anime was a lot more like the second half of the manga with the character development, I'd get it.
>Favorite character?
Sailor V, but only because she had her own manga. From just this, probably Chibiusa
>Favorite arc?
I legit cannot remember any of them

>>
>>291234085
Thaks for the dump, OP
>So, what did you think?
Overall, it was fun to follow along with this storytime, but if I’d picked it up on my own, I probably would have dropped it out of boredom. I had no idea how formulaic this manga was, almost all the story arcs are disarmingly similar. Plus, especially at the beginning, the story feels terribly rushed, and the character development for anyone other than Usagi, Chibiusa, or Mamoru suffers as a result. In the end, I find myself agreeing with >>291234395: an interesting read, but underwhelming for a manga considered a milestone of the genre
>Favorite character?
Rei, of course. But I'm biased because of my memories of the anime
>Favorite arc?

>Favorite character?
1/?
V-Chan is the only one out of the Inners (and Senshi as a whole really) that has any sort of personality and character development, so her. Though Pluto and Saturn and also cool and better characters than their 90’s anime counterparts objectively speaking.

Usagi and Chibiusa had the best actual character development and are also objectively better characters than their 90’s anime counterparts, but I just can’t bring myself to like them much considering the former stole the spotlight from my beloved V-Chan who is a much more interesting character and should’ve continued on as the main from Sailor V, while the latter has that creepy “wants to bang her dad” plot which is also much more overt here compared to the anime (maybe due to the older audience?) and completely ruins and taints her entire character so I just get the ick whenever I look at her.

Favorite villain definitely has to be Galaxia, who is probably the most 3-dimensional and nuanced villain Naoko has ever written which isn’t saying much considering but hey, she’s still a huge improvement over her “dindu nuffin” Mary Sue joke of a character in the 90’s anime, who served as nothing but a weaksauce Jesus Allegory and retread of Professor Tomoe’s possession plot.

Beryl was also pretty cool, I liked how we got actual insight into both her motives and backstory both past and present lives compared to the anime reducing her into a generic Saturday Morning Cartoon villian who’s evil just because.
>>
>>291234085
>>291235676
2/3
Don’t know if he counts as a Sailor Moon villain but I generally count Sailor V as part of the main manga overall so I also found Kaitou Ace/Danburite a fascinating villain, just for the fact that this complete and total nobody and regular civilian got himself caught in-between this great cosmic war and seems to have gotten his memories back before most of the actual main royal players? Like how did that happen? That’s really interesting stuff, I feel like you could make an entire manga just based on his whole story and perspective desu, he feels like the Naru character of the Silver Millennium.

The manga original villain twins Sailors Lethe & Mneosyne were also pretty cool and I’m sad they never made it into the 90’s anime, they felt the most like the sympathetic 90’s anime villains. I also liked how they served as sort of a dark parallel/foil to Serenity and Endymion.

Of the MOTD villains I got the most invested in Tin Nyanko out of all characters and also found her one of the few villains more interesting in the manga than the 90’s anime, if Naoko only had more time in fleshing out the villains and wasn’t going at such a breakneck pace I feel there was a really interesting story to be told there what with how she feels resentment towards Luna and Artemis for abandoning their planet to go serve Queen Serenity’s empire (FUCK manga QS btw, shady-ass bitch and unironically the bigger villain than Beryl desu) all while feeling powerless herself that she wasn’t born with a special Sailor Crystal Star Seed and seeks to become a Senshi through artificial means to protect her abandoned planet. Who is the long-lost Sailor Mau by the way? I feel Naoko always meant for it to be Luna considering how she’s able to become a Senshi in PGSM but I digress
>>
>>291234085
>>291235676
>>291235694
3/4
Nehellenia’s lore in the manga was also cool what with with how she was directly connected to the fall of the Silver Millennium and her connection to the Silver Millenium, didn’t have any character compared to her 90’s anime version but honestly I prefer it this way considering her anime counterpart already felt like the villain who had the most contrived and unearned redemption out of all of them. I like to headcanon that Manga Nehellenia was the former Senshi of the Moon and True Sailor Moon before Queen Serenity settled on the Moon and built her empire, yet her taking the Moon’s weak/dead(?) husk of a Star Seed to the Cauldron to shape it in her image and birth her daughter is what turned Nehellenia into a Chaos incarnation and that’s what caused her grudge against Queen and Princess Serenity.

In fact, that generally goes for a lot of the villains. The Shittenou, Wiseman/Phantom, the Sailor Quartet and Nehellenia all have cool lore that never made it into the anime while being completely devoid of characterization otherwise, while it’s the other way around for their characters in the 90’s anime.

I would say the manga in general is better for lore stuff all around while the anime skimps out on the lore but gives our characters actual screentime, interaction, and personality (in the case of our villains). YMMV which one you prefer, overall I would say the manga is much more plot, world, and lore driven while the 90’s anime is more character-driven and episodic while focusing more on thematic writing and commentary than a hard & fast plot. (Except for Stars, Stars is the only arc in the manga that’s both plot/lore AND thematically driven and that’s also part of why it serves as the best one)
>>
>>291234085
>>291235676
>>291235694
4/4
>Favorite arc?
Stars easily seeing as how it’s the first attempt at an actual deconstruction of the genre and a Proto Madoka of sorts while simultaneously also serving as a dark suicide allegory and commentary. It’s the arc I feel that is unanimously better in the manga compared to the anime while all the other arcs are either better in the anime, or at least equal to their manga counterpart with tradeoffs for both. (Though I will contend that S/Infinity is probably the best PACED arc in the manga).

Stars in the manga knows exactly what it wants to be and has a clear vision, whereas Stars in the anime is a thematically confused mess owing to the departure of Ikuhara and Sato who really made the anime, and is also much too toned down and kiddified compared to it’s manga counterpart while simultaneously losing focus. It also doesn’t FEEL like a true finale to the series the way the manga does but just another run-of-the-mill season.

>So, what did you think?
I was incredibly disinterested past the first arc. The closest I've come to dropping a daily since Shiroyama to Mita. Super formulaic story, bland characters besides Usagi and Chibi Usa, and chapters that go on for way too long but feel devoid of content. The power/ability system is like if you made an intentionally retarded parody of Dragon Ball Super. The art was great and even beautiful at times though. I would never recommend this to anyone, even to a little girl who should theoretically be the target audience.
>Favorite character?
Minako but mostly from Sailor V. Gave her room to breathe aka actually be a character. Besides her, Usagi was fun at times.
>Favorite arc?
Entance Exam Arc/Chibi Usa Picture Diaries because it felt like those chapters weren't bogged down by the flat story. Outside of that, every arc blends in so much I can't differentiate them.

No that’s the 90’s anime, the manga was SUPPOSEDLY targeting teen girls, but considering it’s grimdark deconstructive last arc with a lack of the anime’s fujobait while simultaneously shilling for yuri, it’s obvious Naoko was really trying to target old men instead, she even admitted she designed the Senshi such so that they’d be sexy enough to appeal to men.

>>291231148
Dragonball's story is very simple. There's not much beyond the surface level and it doesn't feel like there should be.
Sailor Moon feels more empty. I'm not seeing anything beyond the surface level, but it feels like I should be. Which is why I wonder if I'm just missing something.
>>
>>291229452
It's a metaphorical manga. Definitely not for everyone.

Stars arc is basically a suicide allegory.

I'm not so sure why you're treating them so differently, but with that expectation, I can see why you'd be disappointed.
>>
>>291238791
I don't think it's just that. For Dragon Ball, the story is the set up for the fights, comedy, and powerscaling autism. In Sailor Moon, the story IS the main focus, so it's simplicity is more apparent and as such the flaws are felt stronger.

>In Sailor Moon, the story IS the main focus
Only in the manga, there isn’t really any one central story in the 90’s anime.

Thanks OP. Not to be rude but the manga was surprisingly amateurish. Way too fast, shit happens and resolves in like two chapters. The supporting cast job at lightning speed and barely get room to breathe and develop. Villains getting one shot every chapter. I've never seen more than a few random episodes but I have to presume the anime does a much better job overall for Sailor Moon to have been the sensation it was.
>Favorite character?
Minako, but I think Hotaru is a close second.
>Favorite arc?
Probably this last arc because Galaxia's build up was actually good. But even then it has problems. Tuxedo and Sailors are absent for the vast majority so don't get any real send off. The main antagonist gets replaced at the very end for generic evil mist who then gets defeated but not really in less than a chapter in a kind of unsatisfying way. The starlights are kind of shit and take up too much time.

>So, what did you think?
as a generation z american male who has only read one shōjo manga before in his life, i recognize i am about as far outside of this manga's target demographic as it is possible to be
that being said, it's been a good read - the senshi all have distinct, likeable characters (which has been a breath of fresh air after the fifteen volumes of saint seiya i wasted two weeks on when that was being storytimed); mamoru acts nothing like the stereotypical piece-of-shit shōjo boyfriend and it's understandable why usagi loves him; the melodramatic parts still feel natural, and when they're resolved the intended catharsis is achieved
something that i noticed, though, is that while on one hand the structure of the main plot is honestly really dull and samey with little variation or room for humor (an ancient evil breaks free from its crystal prison, the senshi fight its minions one-by-one, they get brainwashed and unbrainwashed along the way, then usagi powers up and one-shots the big bad evil guy, immediately rinse and repeat), the side stories, like the "chibiusa's picture diary" chapters and the "exam battle" chapters, are some of the funniest shit ever and they make me wish takeuchi had included more of that kind of downtime in the main story

>Favorite character?
consider me wiseman's strongest soldier
a purple blanket, two decomposing hands, and an orb
what more does an evil sorceror need

>Favorite arc?
>"corporate needs you to find the differences between these five arcs"
>"they're the same arc"

we might be stepping on the dunmeshi daily's toes, then

To everyone who liked Sailor V and the chapters (as in, actually liked them, not in a "eh, guess it was a little less shit than the main Sailor Moon manga" way), I would suggest giving the SM anime a try. It has more of that on offer.
Obviously, move on if you don't feel it. I won't tell you "it gets good 20 hours in" or anything.

>>
>>291234085
I read this whole series expecting to learn why people said sailor moon is stronger than goku and it turns out its all bullshit. I expected some insane amount of power creep in this last arc but she still just believes in her friends and then the bad guy dies. She doesn't even do an attack or anything. If anything her being able to win in this last arc seems extremely context specific.
Not to mention she gets yabba dabbad even more than krillin.

That's not Chibiusa. That's Kousagi, her little sister.

That wasn't very good but congrats on sticking with it and seeing it through. Naoko can come up with some interesting concepts but isn't a very good writer, and her anatomy makes me feel pain

>What did you think
I encountered this daily right as I finished reading stars and I'm just as disappointed now as I was then since I watched the anime before. I appreciate that some arcs are different but the whole manga is so ugly and no-fun-allowed that it only left me wanting more of the anime.
Still easier to stomach than the first 2-3 seasons of crystal somehow

>Favorite character
Man, I want to say Chibiusa followed by Jupiter and Pluto but there's really not much happening with them in the manga most of the time. It's not character assassination but the anime is character birth for a lot of characters, especially antagonists. They gave tuxedo kamen an attack and yet he does even more nothing than in the anime. My answer is N/A

>Favorite arc
I guess stars followed by superS because they're so different? They were the least uninteresting, but I'd rather watch the movies any day over rereading this.
>>
>>291234085
Thanks, OP.
Eh, I still prefer the anime. Rei, followed closely by Minako. Stars.

>Man, I want to say Chibiusa followed by Jupiter and Pluto but there's really not much happening with them in the manga most of the time.
Chibiusa and Pluto are some of the few better developed characters in the manga compared to the anime though?

I agree with >>291234395
I liked the characters and I think the best chapters were the slice of life or monster of the week ones. The early parts where all of the sailor scouts were being introduced was where it peaked.
I could barely even follow the overarching plot after about halfway through.
Everything feels like it just kinda happens. Usagi can solve every problem with a single big fuckoff moonbeam, but she needs to go through requisite emotions first.
I don't have a problem with a story being primarily driven by emotion, but it all feels melodramatic because the problems Usagi despairs over are all so easily fixed.

>>291245160
The most impressive thing she did was blowing up the nemesis planet and undoing the nuke, otherwise it's a lot of vague instakill attacks. Maybe it's different in the anime but I don't get the comparisons.

Not in the last arc are you kidding? Did you not see the future Sailor Cosmos comes from?
>>
>>291253836
And how is that different than the other 3 or 4 universal tyrants that had been defeated by Usagi's emotions before?
>>
>>291234085
Thank you for the all dumps, OP. Was real refreshing to reread all of this.

I have to admit, I'm a bit surprised at how most people in the thread seem to dislike not only the ending but also seemingly a lot of the story itself. I can kind of get it, its such a wildly different kind of story / fighting / powerscaling or whatever other kinds of stuff I imagine a lot of animanga readers care about that it does make sense but I still really love the Stars Arc. The overall message is good, the cosmic scale of things is even better and I do appreciate how Takeuchi tried to, admittedly to varying levels of success, weave together all the characters so far into a single arc. Galaxia really did feel like an overwhelming cosmic threat and hell even the twist with chibi chibi was good.

Some of the writing did get repetitive at things but the overall deconstruction of a lot of magical tropes in the Stars arc in particular counterbalanced it nicely
>>
>>291252944
I'll help.

Anyone who talks about "deconstruction" as an inherently good think should have their opinion completely disregarded.

>Anyone who talks about "deconstruction" as an inherently good think should have their opinion completely disregarded.
For such a childish wish-fulfillment genre like Mahou Shoujo deconstruction is absolutely needed just as the baseline to make anything even half-way decent.
>>
>>291256474
personally I don't care about power scaling. and I think sailor moon i a good manga, but its biggest offense is it's boring.
