It changes you irreversibly (even if one falls out of love, I think at least some part of you will generally remain affected in some manner, especially if it was an intense, long-lasting one), but ultimately, you'd never wish to reverse or override the memories you've made through it, anyway.

But it's still a fucking elephant and they are really hard to care for, putting aside the special shit you're expected to do for a holy one. It's expensive in terms of resources and having to have space for it and handlers. So the idea is you gift it to your enemy, because he's obligated to both accept such a religious gift and take care of it for its whole life.
