This chapter takes place chronologically before the main team meets the shapeshifter
>>
>>291266613
Could be the same one then, but there's no real way of confirming it, unless there's only one shapeshifter around.

I said a couple of days ago that DM is the perfect level of popularity, but that might be wrong. It's the exact level of popularity where the thread dies every other day before I get a chance to reply.
Anyway, I just want to say that I think it's cool how the Lion added realistic flaws to Laios's dream about being king. Flaws that weren't dealbreakers and that Laios could brainstorm how to fix. It makes his manipulation a lot more sophisticated instead of making everything too good to be true.

Why? He has no real shame or embarassment for what he did.

Kabru logically explained that he needed to know what happened to Mithrun in order to actually be able to help him/continue their journey successfully, which is what Mithrun wants to do (to find the demon), so by extension he'd be absolutely fine telling Kabru everything.

It's the same logic as the later scene where Kabru tells an ultra focused Mithrun that if he doesn't eat he'll collapse before reaching the demon, so Mithrun complies and eats. As long as you're able to lay out even a basic explanation of why you want him to do something (and that result is not 'leaving the dungeon/moving away from the demon), he's most likely going to do it without complaints or hesitation.

Nah, guards have the ability to cut off their prisoners ability to use magic if they want.

If the prisoners DID attack their guards, they'd most likley end up stranded and powerless in the middle of the dungeon, plus they'd probably be put on the canaries most wanted list or some shit, so they'd definitely end up getting tortured to death or something if they were caught.

Well with my non nihongo joezu, I see omowanai on the left. I guess yen press did a more literal translation with a hypothetical question followed by a direct no instead of a more explicit musings that the fan tl has. In Japanese, the conclusion of the sentence, "I never want" in "I never want to return to that room where I could eat cake at any time", naturally comes at the very end. the sentence is not broken off.
Translating this into English by placing that conclusion at the beginning would likely require sacrificing either accuracy or emotional nuance.

>The real question is probably, is it normal that they don't always score 100% with their mind reading and charm spell?
They got it right (considering how he got ganked afterward), it's just that Laios has been burned by bad relationships to the point that he doesn't want to open up to anyone anymore. Adventuring/Research for him is an escape from the body's desire to keep seeking love despite the history. So the succubi took his feelings/knowledge about Marcille and presented her in a way that would finally sate him; by turning her in to a monster. A beast who can be killed or experimented on with no repercussion. A perfect relationship with the caveat that if she ever decides to twist the knife, he can twist back in equal measure by throwing her to the humans.
>>
>>291273227
>beast who can be killed or experimented on with no repercussion. A perfect relationship with the caveat that if she ever decides to twist the knife, he can twist back in equal measure by throwing her to the humans.
I don't think it's that dark.
Laios just likes monsters. He likes Marcille but doesn't quite know that he does. And he really wants to be turned into a monster (and his friends as well). That was the combination that got him.
He'd be completely willing to give up his humanity, especially if every human he actually does like comes along with him and that's what the succubus adapted to.
Couldn't snag him with just regular human emotions of attraction, needed to add an erasing his humanity, but bringing along everyone else.

he's only 22, so assuming he was taken in at 6 years old, he had 10 years with milsiril and 6 doing dungeon stuff. and it's not like he had no choice but to eat weird food anyway. in the medieval era going to a tavern for every single meal, every day was pretty standard fare, and he lives under a bar where he's on good terms with the owner.

>taste and even feel pain in dreams
It's kind of weird
Like, the difference between a banana-flavored candy, and a real banana
They both taste like banana, but it's definitely not the same, because one feels "artificial", so to say
Everything makes sense once you realize it's either your brain trying to make a random collage out of everything you've ever lived, random scrying into alternate dimensions, or whatever it really is

Spaces can be non-euclidean
Time goes either too slow, or too fast
Reflective surfaces rarely make sense
Written stuff keeps changing every time you look away
Light sources are sometimes non-existent
Patches of dry soil and moist soil coexist in weird patterns
"NPCs" get either angry, or confused if you make the mistake of calling them that

But most importantly, CONCEPTS GET MIXED all the time, in strange ways that usually only make sense to YOU, and sometimes only after you really, really think about it
I'm sure you have seen them
"Interobjects"
The dream creates chimeras out of diferent things, not just in the physical sense, but also in symbolism, and shit

For example, you could find in your travels, I dunno, let's say, a stomach made out of wood
It's literally shaped like a stomach
But it opens like some kind of wooden chest
And you use it to store coins inside of it, but only the ones made out of iron
Because in the Dream's logic, coins are iron, iron is food, food needs storage, a chest is storage, but so is your stomach, and that's why you dream of a stomach made out of wood, because you spent the last 10 hours of your life talking about exploring dungeons and eating food inside of dungeons

Dreams are fascinating, and I love them
Ever since I first played Yume Nikki for the first time, back in 2008, and LSD shortly after, I've dedicated literal decades of my life to study the phenomena
I guess that's why I relate to both Laios and Senshi so much

>>291274996
Better eye and understanding of human interactions. Men are good at fighting and coreography and portraying movement, women are better at relationships and worldbuilding
>>
>>291274996
broadly speaking
guys can afford to get through life only ever thinking about what other men think, because just being a guy is enough to get them and their needs taken seriously, and the only kinds of people they need to understand are the kinds of men in positions of authority in their culture and what makes them like the cut of your jib
girls on the other hand don't get taken seriously, not even by adult women, so from a young age they got to invest a lot of time in figuring out how all kinds of people tick to get their own needs attended to, so more of them end up as adults that have a really easy time imagining all sorts of different people with different kinds of inner workings and contradictions while their distaff counterparts in creative industries or more likely to have never understood a woman ever and just fall back on archetypes and cliches from the media they grew up consuming, usually only basing female characters on girls or women they've known that either they have a grudge against and want a bit of petty revenge, or else that they had a crush on and are writing a fantasy about their avatar having the relationship with her that they never did IRL
broadly speaking
>>
>>291274996
There's a lot of slop written by both genders, and a lot of great starts written by both genders, but one regard where I think women really outdo men is the ability to write a good ending at the right time.
My theory is that because men are generally expected to be the provider, they have a stronger incentive to keep writing for the sake of their families.
So men are more prone to suffer from success creatively and keep going when they run out of ideas when they feel like they have to.

While I'm in them I'm usually always aware that I'm both the protagonist and the narrator. So like, while the dream is playing out it's like I've read one page ahead of the script and can alter my decision making based on that.
Not sure if you'd call that lucid.

Yaad brought Thistle out of the dungeon when they escaped. He woke up for a brief moment, refused to eat, affirmed that he 'didn't need anything anymore' or some such, then fell unconscious again. The way its framed (and by the fact that right after he dies the golden kingdom lands start surfacing above the ocean) makes me very strongly think he died.

Add on to that the fact that he didn't appear in any post-ending extra comics in the AB, not even the one that was specifically about ex-dungeon masters, + he didn't get an extra 'what are they doing post-ending' blurb added to his AB biography, + his specific timeline in the AB stops directly at this scene >>291277826, pretty heavily implying that was the end for him.

At least in Mithruns case he had a single proper desire left in him that kept him relatively sane and motivated to keep living moment to moment, as well as serving as something to build off of in the future, Thistle was pretty much fully burnt out. Also god knows how long it'd been since he'd slept or eaten (aside from those tiny few berries Falin gave him)

I remember it being strongly implied and it definitely, sadly, feels right for him to find peace.
Except... he was partially eaten like Mithrun.
So there's maybe a problem there. A demon perhaps.
I'm not sure what it could mean for him though, it's not just wishful thinking, something didn't feel right.
I wonder if the demon is still able to use him as a vessel.

>>291277659
Even if Thistle survives, he's basically just a living corpse.
No desire to do anything at all means he can't function in any capacity. Mithrun could at least be baited into fulfilling his basic needs by relating them to defeating the demon.
I'm not sure how Thistle could be functional in any capacity.

Nah he was fully eaten, the lion left a bit of Mithrun behind as 'leftovers', but he gobbled Thistle all up (he even outright laments that he got ahead of himself and didn't leave anything behind), which is why Thistle was basically catatonic.

Also its not as though the demon is actual satan or anything, its more akin to an extra-dimensional alien or something. All that happens to the people it eats (as far as we know) is that it leaves its victims catatonic due to lack of desires, then they just die of starvation/thirst/exposure or whatever else gets them first.
>>

For someone so smart Kabru is pretty fucking stupid, he has no practical abilities to traverse a dungeon. He can solo an entire human party but wipes at a level 1 slime.

I see nothing wrong with that but the issue is that he doesn't either, when he see Laios party perfectly going through floors while he luckshit his way through he still has the gall to shit on them inside his head.

>Also its not as though the demon is actual satan or anything, its more akin to an extra-dimensional alien or something.
For me he's more like an "otherworld" deity than an alien because he corrupts and transforms the physical realm in demonic ways.
I find him frankly terrifying and when you reread the manga in this context it's spooky. It's great. You just don't expect it. There are chess moves being made and you don't even notice them until the final moments of the manga. You think it's a mere food manga/comedy and then there's this weird Gilliam-esque horror twist to it.

Ammit was part lion, hippo, crocodile and was called "she who devours". She devoured the dead. Also Sekhmet, another lion goddess, was also associated with devouring, destroying, mauling and "healing" things. "She who is powerful".

>stupid sexy laois
>>
>>291278456
I imagine the rest of his party usually carries him through the less humanoid monster encounters, and/or his regular sword skills are enough to deal with a lot of the more generic kinds of monsters on the higher floors. Good to keep in mind as well that most adventuring parties actively try to AVOID monsters and only fight them when they have to. Laios and Co are kinda different considering they need to seek them out in order to eat + haphazardly rushing through places in order to get to the dragon faster.

>>291278721
I don't think he is 'inside the beast'. The desires that the lion 'eats' don't seem to go anywhere, they just cease to exist. The demon eating someone isn't really akin to the demon eating their soul or something whole and final like that, even in his (seeming) last moments, Thistle was clearly able to recognise/remember Delgal.

I think the reason it used Marcille as a cover was because it was the best way to leverage the monster-transformation fantasy without Laios getting too suspicious. Chilchuck wouldn't ever want to become a monster, so he's not an option. Senshi wouldn't either, so he's not a good candidate. Izutsumi is Izutsumi. The only person who would be able to draw him in is Marcille, if not because they have feelings for each other, but because she's kinda smart and he trusts her judgement.
>>
>>291278990
Honestly they should be because they should empathise more.
But I just haven't seen that happen and it makes no sense to me.
I guess women kinda shy away from that shit when they're young because it's uncool and they kinda want to fit in with the other girls.
Whereas men tend to be stupidly autistic and driven to make a book or whatnot
.

But I think that might change, it's just a cultural thing. Seems like there used to be way more good female writers in the past when it was probably considered a feminist thing to do. You have female writers with psuedonyms and whatnot because they want to prove themselves anonymously. And people used to get kinda obsessed about female writers in the 1800s and early 20th century when they did this. It added to the mystique and people felt it gave the story an interesting quality. Later you get the great Agatha Christie and writers like that. It's only in recent times that it's kinda stalled for female writers and I think that's purely a cultural thing.

You read shit by men and often it's boring as fuck. They just fail the empathy test at times. It frustrates me personally as a man that we suck at this. But at the same time, there are places where that could be a distracting thing. That's why the difference between sexes. We both suck at something, but usually the opposite of the other sex. Natural selection probably did that. It's so stupid.

Seeing my sister feel like she has to join the crowd of girls that go to parties and "live their lives" while ignoring her own talents frustrated me as a brother. All sisters kinda did their own version of this. It's just how they do. I did the opposite and hated being like other people. kek

Kui scares me.
There were things in this that I didn't expect at all in this that had payoff later in the manga.
Normally manga are way more obvious with it. Too obvious.

But these ones caught me because I was like "ok cheesy gimmick about eating monsters in dungeons, comfy and silly let's go" at the start. It was not comfy, nor silly.
This manga scares me with how many times it did this relentlessly while tying it to this esoteric metaphorical parallel of our own world.

To be fair, she could've taught him how to fight fucking monsters, not other humans.

In Baldur's Gate 3 grease was annoying because if you slipped it costs actions to get up and if your melee guys had to close the distance and couldnt jump or fly, it was gamble to go through grease floor. I wouldnt use it myself as a player because why bother gambling making enemy lose turn when you can just kill them but if enemy managed to use it on player, it was troublesome. So pretty much an anti-player obstacle but not something player would use. Same with majority of debuffs and traps, they are troublesome for player but whatever if you want to use them on enemy

The greeks apparently had been using oils like how civs used gunpowder about 2000 years before them.
The Byzantines were using it regularly.

It kinda bothers me that we just stop at gunpowder as the first "explosive" when we had explosives before gunpowder. Of course, it wasn't nearly as spectacular as gunpowder, but people probably saw things being mixed and creating "magic" as they probably considered it. So the method was kinda cooking. It's not just that though.
It's this one neat package that I think does the perfect amount for me when trying to represent the folly and arrogance of man when trying to achieve wealth and greatness and when trying to manifest their dreams. But then it adds this twist when it's also sorta being a critic of our reality all up and it's own arrogance. It's a very weird one for me.

A manga about eating dungeon animals btw kek.
It also deliberately manipulates expectations so masterfully at the start of the manga that you are drawn into Kui's Wild Ride. By nearly every chapter end you are hungry for more because it exceeds your expectations at the start of it. By the end of it you've sold your soul to Satan and then Laois beats Satan with his sheer stupidity and it's just kino.

I think this kinda confused her character for me. She's, let's be frank, quite stupid and animalistic and I don't think she has that capability to just "accept herself". I think one of DMs greatest strengths is also why it has a hard time getting people to give it a proper chance. The droves of shitty one gimmick fantasy manga and anime have poisoned the well, so to speak, and make people wary of giving the high concept approach of DM an earnest go, unless it's explicitly recommended by someone.
What makes DM so amazing is how well things come together on a thematic and narrative level the further you go and every aspect just keeps improving. The story gets grander, the overall art improves a great deal, the humor hits harder as you get endeared to all the characters, it's so damn good if you just give it am earnest go.

>Chilchuck is losing more and more hair from babysitting the crew
>Marcille is still turning into a Sith Lord and hasn't given up on Laois' bullshit
>And Izutsumi is still just a cat
And everything is burning around them and it's all their fault. I was just expecting that to become even more chaotic and like bellyflopping on a pizza.

There, I am a genius. You guys are talentless hacks.

Honestly, I think those reactions would be spot on if they saw MarScylla. But if they only saw the regular Marcille succubus, I imagine it going more like this:

>Senshi has a skewed view of elves, so he'd find Laios's taste a little strange. He'd give Laios a judgmental look as if trying to understand the lad tastes, which Laios would immediately misread as disgust.

>Chilchuck would be annoyed because of his own bad experiences with relationships, but he'd mostly keep it to himself, aside from the occasional grumpy jab whenever Laios and Marcille got too close. Once he left the group, though, he'd quietly root for them.

>Marcille would blush furiously and say something on the lines of: “I didn't know you saw me that way...” like in the picture but not with disgust, but extremely embarrassed. Things would be awkward between them for the next days: Laios would convince himself she hated him now, while Marcille wouldn't know how to act around him, even though part of her would be secretly thrilled which would make her confused since he's definitely not her 14-year old chuunni-bookworm type.

I could see their relationship developing from there way later on. Shit, now I want any of them had seen it.

>What about Izutsumi?
Izutsumi.
>>

There's a good amount of discussion of the previous chapter in this thread, to be fair.
>>
>>291280826
That's an alternate ending, I think.

I don't think Marcille could live with that sort of CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

The amount of anime/manga shit that I have seen this in is STUNNING.
Fuck, even Mulan did it I think.

For me, if you do that, the hair has to bite them in the ass by the end of the show or whatever.
>disguise didn't work because her hair was too short
Otherwise it's just a silly overdone trope.
>>
>>291280839
This daily might have the worst pacing in terms of replies.
Too slow to consistently die within a day, but too fast to consistently last several days.
Not really anyone's fault. Just a shitty coincidence.

That's how you know Dungeon Meshi is written by a woman.
Marcille actually gets to keep her hair because Kui knows how important it is.
>>
>>291280874
The ending where the entire thing derails onto another wild ride?
Could be an idea.

Don't do an eva rebuild though or a FF7 remake though. Just start the manga at the end of this one and then do the alt ending.
If you do a rebuild, it's gotta be at least Endless Eight with the pattern repeating many many times. Though obviously not like that show, that would be infuriating.
More like stein's gate? I don't even like that show much though.
>>
>>291280950
>Not Furiosa short
That would be kinda funny.
>shaved Marcille
>she immediately wants to end her life in embarassment
>>
>>291279925
Except for Senshi I think they're pretty accurate, it would definitely make things awkward with Marcille for a while until Laios rolls one of his nat 20's and manages to savage it in an unexpected way.

Dat choker pulls the look together.

>That's how you know Dungeon Meshi is written by a woman.
Nah I think she was just trying to settle it down comfortably because there were enough dark moments in it that it wouldn't right just having a Red Dwarf ending kek.
I'm never gonna be able to unsee that now kek.

The thing is, they're comic, but not Flanderized so they do have tendency to break character for some form of payoff. That's another thing kui does well.
When something doesn't fit the character, that's because some bullshit is about to happen that relates to them that none of the other crew knew about generally. And it's funny seeing that resolved and generally them returning to normalcy at the end of that arc. You have some growth throughout the manga, but what's funnier is when you see the manga build the potential for growth and seeing these characters doing everything within their power to no go along with it to the point where there are hilarious results. The characters are "indigestible" in the dungeon and it's hilarious.
>>
>>291281145

While the rest of the group is reluctant on party romance Marcille would be the one to enjoy all the flirting. There would be no stopping her once all the implications got out in the open.

You're the type the succubus are most effective on.
I can already see the supplemental comic. Gruff Anon saying your line in the first panel, Chilchuck giving you a warning in the second, then cut to what makes you tick and shocked form. Then flashforwards to Chilchuck nodding and saying "He retired after that..." while the rest of the party nods solemnly.

To be fair Izutsumi's schizophrenia soul made her neigh immune and super-autism gave Laios a resistance so while this guy clearly isn't him it's plausible someone could tank a Succubus outright.

I'd be inclined to agree if not for the fact that the succubus wasn't just Marcille Au Naturale, but manifested two very specific aspects that we know have stuck in Laios's memory. Being her smile and undone hair.
Laios REALLY likes Marcille's smile and that's a fact. The undone hair, may not be necessarily physically attractive to him, but it is something he has (presumably positive) mental associations with due to that her being her appearance when she was first reviving Falin.

The Succubus could have manifested as regular old Marcille, but it chose a Marcille with a particular style that allegedly appeals most to Laios, even though, it did fail initially. (And there's more questions to be raised from that fact -- how does a Succubus guise fail even?)

Where are you guys getting the idea that Laios resisted it? I had thought it was intentional - the Succubus knew that he was wary of them, so it concocted a scenario that would allow it to disarm him, by initially convincing him that he had seen through them.
>>
>>291281253
That would a problem. It would affect group chemistry and function if Marcille started prioritizing Laios. Chilchuck is right again
>>
every party should employ a Jack the Ripper sadist to deal with succubi encounters
>>
>>291282171
>I had thought it was intentional
I mean, that's totally possible: that all of it was a long con and only tricking Laios into thinking he was resisting the charm. But from a hunter's perspective, giving your prey a chance to choke slam you and draw a weapon doesn't seem smart.
>>
>>291282171
The succubus aren't sentient and cannot plan like that, they simply take the form of what the subject subconsciously desires enough to be paralyzed until they can suck them. The fact that it seemed that Laios attacked it means that things could have gone wrong. Izutsumi already proved that their disguises aren't infallible, even if her circumstances are unique. Laios eventually fell for it but the succ would have gone for Scylla Marcille directly if it meant no threat to it.
>>
>>291282165
No way Laious dick is that long.

>>291282171
