But something frail with an overpowered attack would be too easy to beat. A phoenix is weak enough to be defeated easily, but impossible to keep down as long as it can revive. And its revival is fire-based, so that would be dangerous. Pretty much the perfect puzzle piece for the scenario she was building.After that, I think Kui asked herself how they'd cook it once it was dead, and the conclusion she came to was that it would cook itself and Senshi would have to control the heat by moving Yaad closer and further away.

Plus, ideally, mages aren't meant to be the ones potentially taking physical hits to begin with, they're meant to be in the back, supporting with longer ranged spells. Closest we get to proper mage armor is the canaries, whose clothing is quite strong despite how thin it looks due to it being made of ariadne silk.
