Note: "Nostalgia Kaijin" is a pun because "nostalgia" and "silkworm" are homophones.

>>291497245Thx mate.
>>291497157This is actual toku lore. Sentai originally didn't have giant mecha [at least for the team] for the first two series made with Shotaro Ishinomori. It was only after the success of a deal with Marvel that led to Toei Spider-Man and the success of the giant robot added to that series that Sentai gained piloted mecha.
>>291497245Thank you for posting, OP.
>>291498368The funky part for me is that Gorenger and JAKQ weren't considered part of the franchise for many decades and only retroactively added to it when Toei realized that it just made sense.Kinda the same as how Metal Heroes wasn't originally a franchise but it got a bunch of "similar enough" heroes added together later on.Or how Ultraseven apparently wasn't planned on being a sequel to Ultraman then halfway in they threw in that he's from M78 and has a Color Timer.
>>291498029In general, There is variance within the category.Small collectibles used to sometimes have electronics inside them but now they almost always use a pin system so all the electronics are in the more expensive item. Upside: cheaper to produce and sell. Downside: people fiddle with the pins and can find spoilers the instant new merch drops (this is why final form items these days often have built-in electronics, probably).
bump for readers
>>291500850>Or how Ultraseven apparently wasn't planned on being a sequel to Ultraman then halfway in they threw in that he's from M78 and has a Color Timer. That got even worse with Jack because he was supposed to OG Man hence the name Return of Ultraman but then got retconned to hell and back to the point where he didn't have a proper name until Taro.

>Don't know anything about Tokusatsu>Still enjoy the mangaI love how it is mostly a look into different behaviors and attitudes that are common in hobbies. You can replace it with any other media form, like vidya for example, and you'll get a pinpoint match to some of the ideas presented so far.

>>291497021>>291497037I remember Ex-Aid suffering a lot from this, namely with Cronus appearing a lot earlier or at least far more abruptly than he should have. Since that was my first time watching a series as it aired, it made me apprehensive going into Build and seeing full-on toy commercials with stuff like Night Rogue's first transformation with his face revealed, but that series ultimately was a lot more solid.Similarly it made me bounce off of LuPat, since I liked the Patrangers a lot more as characters, but Lupin was getting all the toys at the time
>>291518586I have the notes that I've been putting as a back page the Dex upload that I figure are fine to just type out while doing the daily drops here, if I find them interesting enough. My process is that I've left all the cultural stuff relatively intact but wordplay I try and find an English equivalent if possible, and some of the cultural references I might smooth over.My general philosophy is to prioritize accuracy with some slack on tricky lines aiming to make it read naturally without needing the notes, and then add the notes for people who want them.
>>291516711:>
>>291517053Thanks for the read and the work, OP>>291518913Sounds like a pretty fair balance, especially since this is otherwise untranslated work and so this will be put into a position of prominence and wide appeal.I also know dealing with comedy can be tough. I remember during Zero-One, a lot of the average watchers avoided IzuSubs because Whale stuck with TL notes quite often for puns and wordplay. I preferred him though, especially since IIRC he was the only one that really translated Aruto's catchphrase the best way, and besides, you gotta support the hometown hero.
>>291519060On the other hand, one of those little joys that is beyond most people is seeing a pun that is 1:1 in both languages.

>>291497021BUT THAT WAS ALWAYS LIKE THIS!Those shows existed to sell toys! That was their thing since the beginning, merchandising! This woman is delusional, acting as if her childish hobby was all important and meaningful.
What the hell, is this buyfag the manga?
>>291535314Firstly, it was the older man acting as if the older series was less of a toy commercial (despite that obviously making no sense). Secondly>acting as if her childish hobby was all important and meaningfulBoth of these statements can be true; something being a toy commercial does not preclude it from having meaning and value outside of selling plastic.
>>291535314>>291535519If you're familiar with toku, it's gotten more severe with time. Due to increased competition in the entertainment space as well as inflation making the series more expensive, toku has had an increasing amount of toy integration.Like for Kamen Rider it went from 1 Rider with maybe 3 or 4 alternate forms and a super form to the tradition being a Rider with at least 4 Q1 alt forms, a second cour super form (for Christmas) possibly with 2 tiers, a midseason form (that also might have a second tier), and a final form.Series like Timeranger or King Ohger are near universally beloved but they are generally well known to have been financial flops. Meanwhile there are series that are really not enjoyed for their writing like Zi-O or Gotchard that nevertheless get repeated support because the toy lines sold really well (and in Gotchard's case the toys being cards made it have insanely good margins).Part of making a series is that you have to finance it. "Toy commercial" doesn't inherently mean "lacking artistic merit." It just has that reputation in the West because a lot of 80s shows like He-Man or GI Joe sacrificed writing for toy integration.
