She's more a dofus for not considering that's probably what happened. As for Marcille, she not only did well to keep things hidden from everyone, but they page also brings up that the average adventurer has no clue that desires has anything to do with it. She thinks that someone would only become the Lord as part of taking over the kingdom. Remember, the Elves keep the details of the Demon as far under wraps as possible.
