He knows that the mere mention of black magic is enough for elves to take them all away and the existence of Faligon will get the dungeon closed so he rely reluctantly works with Laios to stop them.Eventually he realizes Laios is not evil but just an airhead monster otaku and mellows down. However he's still manipulating everyone around him and every single time he's ready to stab people in the back of things go wrong.

You could argue that this was Kui doing a comedic subversion where the spooky brown guy isn't actually a threat, but reading from the start makes me doubt it. His party getting wiped was comedic but it's the reader doesn't get to see that many competent repeatedly parties, Like Shuro's party, the canaries if you count that. His partying hyping him up at this point is comedic with hindsight though.

He is like his adoptive mother where there is a through-line of self-serving in his all his compassionate acts.
