How does one develop discipline? I have accepted that I cannot be perfect and that I will slip up but I want to learn to be more disciplined and master myself. At least as much as I am able to do so

Decide what you want.
Find a path to it with incremental steps.
Develop a schedule you can repeat behaviours on.
Develop consistency.
Once you are consistent for a good moment, increase efforts.

Accept that to achieve your goals you might have to give up things you enjoy but are preventing you from advancing

every action comes from one of these 5 sources in your brain:

>amygdala:
this one is responsible for the fear response, so you you might do or not do something bc you are afraid of it.

>dopaminergic system:
"it will be good or feel good for me now, so let's do it"

>serotoninergic system:
"it will be good or feel good for me in the future, so let's do it"

>endo-cannabanoid system
habitual behaviors originate from here

>frontal lobes/prefrontal cortex:
executive function, aka your willpower

The thing is whenever you use your willpower, eg.:forcing yourself to do something, you actually get tired, and once you are tired you'll just revert to doing the bad/easy things you were doing up till now. You need to outsource as many "good+healthy behaviours" to your habits as you can.

So as this anon said:
>build a habit first by doing tiny, easy things
this shouldn't pressure your willpower too much, or else you'll revert
>optimize the habit later
this becomes easy, once you have the habit
