is betting actually bad or is it just that normal people are too impulsive and tend to lose big because of getting overconfident?

Well, the odds are against you. If you just think everyone is simply stupid, then you are on of them. It isn’t bad if you’re not hurting anyone.
>>
Betting isn't bad if you have the mental capacity to accept it as entertainment and set limits for yourself

Also slots and scratchers are for braindead boomers

If you bet on something with a low house edge like sports craps and blackjack, you can come out ahead in the short term. I've won $10K playing craps this year

Don't pull money out from the ATM and don't bet money you can't afford to lose

FWIW it's not cheap entertainment either. A strip club costs less than a casino visit. You can make $200 last all night at at a strip club, $200 will get you maybe 20 minutes of blackjack if you're lucky

Betting is a natural part of decision-making and often done in crucial moments. Gambling is bad because it can entail an unhealthy habit of betting despite significant losses. Professional gamblers have an extremely high proficiency and awareness of the risks, which is not the case for the average person who uses it merely as a vice.

About 2-3% of people are bipolar and likely to make irrational choices with their money at some point in their illness. Beyond that, low IQ people are also likely to make bad bets because they don't understand math and probability.

Either way, it's a shitty habit. I don't think it should be illegal but it's a dirtier business than the gambling industry would like to admit

Confidence has nothing to do with it, only frequency. It is only possible to win by winning big early and never betting again. Each successive bet brings you closer to the 51% house wins equilibrium, which means eventually you lose all the money you continue to bet
>>
Most people manage to lose money in the dumbest ways, betting is not the culprit

Betting is betting. It’s neutral. It only becomes bad the moment someone chooses a bad reason to bet. If someone goes to the blackjack table and merely want to play for the experience and fun of the game, it’s fine. If they’re going there because they honestly think they’re gonna make money, they’re an addict at worst, or simply desperate at best.

Only gamble if you don’t care about losing and aren’t in it for the money. Also if you are one of those people who genuinely think ‘luck’ exists, also don’t play. Cuz you’ll become a chronic gambler. And when you stop seeing the luck in the game, you get banned from casinos cuz at that point you learn how to cheat.

This is it. Pretty much the only way I can think of to make relatively “smarter” bets instead of random chance is if you have a good mind for sports statistics and bet on MMA or hockey or soccer instead of casino shit, but ultimately the whole system is designed to farm money from gamblers and you MUST stop while you’re ahead. Set an amount of money that you’re comfortable with spending, and once you’ve spent it, it’s done. Don’t bet your winnings. Don’t bet to try to make up for losing money.

Kenny Rogers said it best. “Know when to walk away, and know when to run…”
