How do I not be self-righteous and how do I deal with self-righteous people? I'm at an impasse. I hate self-righteous people but I have to admit that I'm self-righteous myself. What do I do? Any good advice?

It entirely depends on the specifics. I have started to kind of like this part of myself - obviously, I had to adjust it to make it not dysfunctional. Having strong conviction is good if you can make it work for you. Personally, I aim to always be on the side of truth, and also to express myself in a way that is likely to be effective. I also think pretty deeply about things. As a result, I have strong convictions, but they are well articulated and I present them in soft language - I do not antagonise others but instead attempt to gently prod them to re-examine their views through non-combative questioning. If I am dealing with a hopeless case that is clearly stuck in his ways, I thank them for the conversation and disengage. You can't help those people.
As for friends, always be polite in discussing things, and if you end up at an impasse, stop discussing that topic and never bring it up again.

Simple, create your own alternate reality than the one you immediately arrive at.
