How do I best tutor children? What should I look out for?
I had good grades myself, but in one of the subjects I teach I was only average at best. I'm afraid that I'll fuck up and that the students will realize my mediocre knowledge in it. Their parents are paying a ton of money in the hopes of them getting into a better school thanks to me!

Wtf should I do? How can I reach these kids? I mean, if they're not willing to learn, it's not my fault either, right?
Thank you.

i think you should ask a school in the area that does the same work about it

Good idea, thank you

>How do I best tutor children?
Find kids that aren't being abused by their parents and who aren't regularly subject to neglect or irrational accusations by their parents.
Reason being: You get an abused kid, and A. The kid will fail to learn, and B. The parents will blame you for it, because they don't take accountability.
Assuming you get kids who aren't abused, you can literally just fucking talk to their parents about what the child wants and how to work with the child's goals, and from there you can decide on a case by case basis if a given child is worth the time or if they're just gonna be bored and unmotivated and thus not worth your time.
>I'm afraid that I'll fuck up and that the students will realize my mediocre knowledge in it.
... So what if they do? That doesn't stop you teaching, nor does it stop them learning.
>Wtf should I do? How can I reach these kids?
Wrong question, ask instead A. If the people close to these kids would even notice / care whether those kids are reached or not (The answer is usually no), and then B. Ask if the kids are worth reaching (again, the answer is usually no).
For the kids whose parents/guardians actually do their job properly, and who have the capacity to learn, you can probably just talk to them or their parents about how to reach them.

Thank you! I'll look out for signs that indicate abuse.
BTW, I forgot to add that I work for a tutoring agency, so I actually don't see the parents and only the student. This agency offers the space to learn, I meet with my students there. They buy a package of let's say 15 45min-lessons. Does your advice still apply? I mean, I don't want to unnecessarily call their guardians and talk about the goals that the agency already tells me, you know

Btw, this isn't always the case, as sometimes I will go to their actual homes for 1,5 hours at least.

An agency should have materials to train you how to tutor according to their standards

Well, yeah they do!! Maybe I should ask them. Why haven't they told me anything yet? Haha

Are you a qualified educator? How did you get the job?
>>

>Are you a qualified educator?
Technically, I once had 4 private students before Corona hit and everything came to a standstill. But I didn't study to become a teacher or anything specific like that.

>How did you get the job?
I applied for the tutor job and got it because of my good grades and experience in tutoring

Why do you ask?

My mother (before I did strange things that warranted it) would accuse me of irrational things when I was a boy and as a teen yes but in my late teens and early 20’s I didn’t hold it against her because I was strange at times that is not something that should be equated with abuse or put in the same sentence, it’s just parent shit; it’s what they do, and I don’t see why it’s a fucking issue. Christ people are soft.

What did she accuse you of and what did you do then in real life?
>>
>>32589848
It's not enough to know the subject. You have to make yourself think like someone who doesn't know it and is convinced they can't do it. You can't just say "Come on - you know 6x2=12, Why can't you see that here?" Find a way to do an end run around their resistance "hey, I've got a dozen eggs here. Do you want half of them? How many is that?"
>>

It's abuse
It goes in the same sentence
Deal with it

Okay so I have to get down to their level?

Denial is a common coping mechanism
