Reason being: You get an abused kid, and A. The kid will fail to learn, and B. The parents will blame you for it, because they don't take accountability.
Assuming you get kids who aren't abused, you can literally just fucking talk to their parents about what the child wants and how to work with the child's goals, and from there you can decide on a case by case basis if a given child is worth the time or if they're just gonna be bored and unmotivated and thus not worth your time.

BTW, I forgot to add that I work for a tutoring agency, so I actually don't see the parents and only the student. This agency offers the space to learn, I meet with my students there. They buy a package of let's say 15 45min-lessons. Does your advice still apply? I mean, I don't want to unnecessarily call their guardians and talk about the goals that the agency already tells me, you know

It's not enough to know the subject. You have to make yourself think like someone who doesn't know it and is convinced they can't do it. You can't just say "Come on - you know 6x2=12, Why can't you see that here?" Find a way to do an end run around their resistance "hey, I've got a dozen eggs here. Do you want half of them? Denial is a common coping mechanism
