I am not sure what to do. I am graduating with a degree in philosophy. Yes, I know. I'm looking at basically 4 things: become a lawyer, join the military (officer), become a merchant mariner, do philosophy phd and try to become professor. I just want a simple life where I have enough money to life comfortably, eventually raise a family, and enough time to pursue projects in my free time. I want some job security. I do NOT want to work more than 9-5. I do not want to have to kiss ass or slave away for someone else, ideally, I guess, I want some freedom. The problem is that none of the options that I listed have all of the things that I want, so IDK what I want to do. Any ideas?

I dunno but my friend and I who were heavily into philosophy went into programming because it's easy as fuck in comparison.

how is philosophy harder than computer science? do you mean the job market is easier or that the actual material and skill is easier?

Material/skill wise, although I'll grant that design and architecture is where the real difficulty in software lies. As far as lower level concepts go, if you can study philosophy you should be able to pick up any programming language within a few days. Programming and philosophy have deep affinities- many concepts from programming such as properties, types, functions, classes, will come naturally to anyone who is familiar with philosophy.

Yeah, it's tough out here for anything humanities related. Military isn't terrible, just do something useful in it that can transfer to a good civie career.

Your best bet is to go back to school but go for something with money in it, or self-teach it, or use connections to get into a field. Government jobs are nice but require time and I haven't had any luck with them, but maybe you will be different?

You can get almost any non-tech job with that degree. Sales - either retail or B2B - comes to mind.
