Im chair force and just found out ill be in okinawa for like 2-3 years. I want to learn japanese at least to the level to not be a complete tard in public, how do? Is duolingo a meme? I'm like really slow so the idk how to actually learn a language and this is the first time its really been a good idea for me to do so. I'm really excited and want to make the most of it while im there, where should I start?

>>32595974Immersion is still how you learn the fastest. That one polyglot guy on youtube becomes conversational incredibly fast through flashcards and speaking practice for hours a day. Not meme apps and practicing learning how to read and write. If your goal is oriented towards media consumption of manga and anime I guess that's fine but it seems to me like OP wants to be able to actually converse in Japanese.

He learned Portuguese or something using AI speaking partner entirely and then went to Brazil or whatever and used it on real people for the first time and was able to get by. I'm sure a popular language like Japanese would have pretty robust bots.
