Im just gonna say immediately that I have no idea what it means when I see people say 2x15 sets of something. Im too afraid to ask people irl. Don't have the confidence to go to the gym either.

Questions:
what the fuck are sets? is it just how many to do and why dont they just say the full amount instead

How do I gain confidence to try the gym? I dont like talking to people I just want to grind weight loss.

Ive never worked out in my life and ive thought about trying recently

You are not going to get anywhere at all talking to people online if you have to ask questions as basic as that: you'll just end up injuring yourself. Find a local gym where you can pay for 1 on 1 sessions with a trainer. They will answer all your questions, and *show* you how to do things (rather than just describing it) and tell you where you're going wrong (if you are). It's their job to help people like you.

If you insist, I'll answer that. When training for strength or muscle growth (as opposed to training for cardiovascular fitness and weight loss, which works differently) you normally set the weight or the resistance at a level where you quickly reach the point where you are too tired to continue, or at least too tired to continue while actually doing the exercise properly ("good form"). You might, for example, set the weight so you can just barely do eight repetitions (reps) of the exercise. When working out you might then do a set of eight, rest for a minute or two, then do a second set of eight, rest for another minute or two, and then do a third set, rest again, and then move on to a different exercise. That would be three sets of eight repetitions.

But if you're trying to lose weight, you probably won't be doing much of that. It's extremely inefficient to try and lose weight and build muscle simultaneously. To be able to build muscle you need to be eating as many calories as you burn, and also taking in quite a bit of extra protein on top of that, while losing weight requires you to eat fewer calories than you burn. And the kind of exercise that builds muscle burns glucose rather than fat. So if weight loss is your goal, you want to be doing gentler exercise for a long period: enough to get your heart rate up and make you breathe faster, but not to make you so out of breath you couldn't carry on a conversation, and not intense enough to make your muscles get quickly tired. And you need to keep that up for a long time, not just for a minute or two.

the rep is an instance of the exercize, 1 pushup 1 rep, 2 pullups 2 reps etc
the set is the continuous collection of those reps, 2 sets of 10, 20 total reps.
when was the last time you thought of anyone you saw during your day/store, and if so how many seconds, thats what they're going to think of you at the gym while they stare at themselves in the mirror/focus on their own goals
i re signed to a closer gym recently actually completely online i guess i'll just pick up the key card tomorrow
the mental gains most important just setting the routine at the start and figuring stuff out then the physical gains follow

I believe it means that you do 15 repetitions of the same motion in a row, and you do that twice with a rest in between. So 15 repetitions, then rest, then another 15.

You are starting off at such a low level of knowledge it might actually help you to just get a personal trainer for a few months until you learn how to lift.

You could start with beginner YouTube videos to save money but you need to pay attention to the lifting form. If you lift weights with poor form you could get hurt. Start with low weights and build up. And to answer your question 2x15 means you do the move 15 times, take a short break, take a breath, and then do it again.

Gyms are for strong people. It's their safe place. If you're unfit you should avoid the gym as you'll make strong people uncomfortable.
