Why do bats have such fucked up faces? Is it because they’re nocturnal? I’ve noticed cave animals and deep sea animals become extremely ugly as they evolve, do all animals have some sense of aesthetics that is abandoned when they can no longer see each other?

>>4828253Seems like this particular one isn't actually parasitic but commensalistic. They feed on guano and are harmless to the bats. They live in colonies close to the bat roost. Females groom the larvae and eggs while special males who've surpassed their natural life-span act as guards and emit vibrations so the bats don't find and eat them. Pretty interesting read.
