Those are parasitic maggots, likely bot fly larvae, infesting the face of that bird.

There is one minor benefit that they may confer, or it may be more like "we evolved to deal with them and now they're gone something is overcompensating". Many endoparasites (that is, internal ones) in humans have a MILD immunosuppressant effect. IDK about in nonhumans, but it may be similar. It's possible that the rise in autoimmune disorders in humans in the developed world correlates with the lowering prevalence of endoparasites.

Not to say "You should go get tapeworm, it's good for you", but that there may be a link here.
