Daily reminder that you need to be thankful if you live in a place free of botflies.Like, fuck. Praise God if that fact applies to you.
>>4830064Why? What the hell is that image?
>>4830185Those are parasitic maggots, likely bot fly larvae, infesting the face of that bird. The fly lays the eggs on the skin of a host, the maggots burrow juuuust into the skin and leave their breathing-holes exposed, while eating and using the host's skin for protection.
>Damn, you're ugly
>>4830345Yeah that’s shittyParasites always suck
>>4830450There is one minor benefit that they may confer, or it may be more like "we evolved to deal with them and now they're gone something is overcompensating". Many endoparasites (that is, internal ones) in humans have a MILD immunosuppressant effect. IDK about in nonhumans, but it may be similar. It's possible that the rise in autoimmune disorders in humans in the developed world correlates with the lowering prevalence of endoparasites. Not to say "You should go get tapeworm, it's good for you", but that there may be a link here.
