Gender as you know it has been co-opted to make it sound more ok in language for someone to exhibit hermaphroditic behavior. In reality these people have actual brain damage (sexual differentiation failures). Not a different gender.

However the original inkling of an idea was that gender was sex associated behaviors that could vary by culture and is therefore something unique to animals with culture sophisticated enough for men and women in different regions to take on different roles that may conflict with other cultures norms
