Welp, blue jays found the berries. I think I heard a veery in there this morning too and robins have been at it for a while. They don't taste good to humans until after a frost then they taste like little tomatoes.
>>
Oh yeah the veery was notable because it was making a sound like it's usual "veer" call which you know if you have them around... but it was trilled like it was throwing in a bit of it's song at the beginning. You had to be there. Nobody cares except me. It was cool though.

I just heard a carolina wren singing. They are usually supposed to be south of me by a hundred miles. I wonder if this one is migrating north a bit before heading south. Or could just be a nearby resident that's migrating through, range maps aren't always right.

Refresh my memory, what bird was it that would walk on its balled up fists? I think it had to do with walking in hot desert sands or maybe swamps or something.

Tall and upright, more like a Secretary Bird than a Flamingo, but with the same kind of walking-on-stilts movement. Not really a notable plumage as far as I can remember but my recollection is so thin I'm not sure I didn't make it up.

Thanks to the anon who responded to my comment in the last thread. I plan to emigrate to the USA somewhere in the coming years to build a homestead with lots of animals. The ducks will have an outdoor enclosure around a water source (to protect them from birds of prey) so the eggs would be easy to find. I might keep chickens as well for a more consistent source of eggs besides that.

Baby goldfinches found my bird bath and were all drinking out of it and taking little splashy baths while the adults were eating flower seeds in my garden I'm so happy.

Goldfinch breeding time is the best time of year. But I know they will be gone in a couple weeks when the adults start to molt and I won't see them until November.

I love to playfight with this lil nibba so much. While he's hyper focused on his attempts to draw blood from the skin between my fingers I can hold him whichever way, flip him sideways, slightly pinch his neck, squeeze his cheeks, open his wings, etc. Not a fuck given.
Then as soon as I pet his head he instantly enters comfy mode. Not even my dog was this autistic.

His daughter-girlfriend in the background however isn't playful, just wants to sleep in the palm of my hand.

A little magnolia warbler ran itself into one of my windows and broke its neck. ):

>>
>>4881152
That sucks. I had a goldfinch splat into a window. Then a grackle killed and ate one as it was trying to use a bird feeder.

Yesterday I watched a raven on my back deck hunting a squirrel. I've never seen them be such aggressive predators, I feed them dead squirrels but actually I only kill gray squirrels and it was hunting a red squirrel. Stared at it longingly from the railing, then jumped down and tried to chase it and grab it. They're not good predator birds and the squirrel was too fast for it, but unusual to see. The squirrel didn't seem to understand it was being hunted and kept going back to eating and the raven tried multiple times to catch it.

I have a question about eating birds. I'm not a big meat eater.

The only birds I've eaten are turkey, duck, and chicken; they taste broadly pretty similar (though duck is too oily for me to stomach). Meanwhile, pork, beef, and mutton all taste super different. Do birds in general all taste the same or is it just the ones that happen to be commonly eaten?
>>
>>4882855
You've deficient taste buds. While I can understand MAYBE confusing chicken for turkey, duck tastes nothing like either. Nor does faraona (not sure the English word and can't be fucked up look it up; they're basically fluffy, blue, edible dinosaurs), pigeon, quail, goose or pheasant. Well, quail sort of.

Couldn't get a pic of it but seen a beautiful light purple almost lavender bird with an orange chest. I live in NC borderline VA area (could literally walk across the border within the hour) and after a little bit of googling the closest match I could get is the Eastern Bluebird (image related). Which not only be blue instead of purple but even the orange is extremely dull. Is it possible I seen something else or did I just so happen to spot one of the most beautiful and possibly mutated Eastern Bluebird I could had possibly ever seen? I doubtful I am mistaken or it could been the lighting, it was a sunny day with it being in direct sunlight and it stood still enough for me to get a good long look at it, just not long enough to pull out my phone when thinking about it and getting to the photo app.

Does Bird's Ureters connect to some kind of bladder, or do they go straight up to the intestine?
If it's the latter, could one say that in the case of avians "Pee is stored in the anus"?
>>
https://youtu.be/5Y1ItZDV3gc?si=TKCxdmNt69YddZ6s
>>
>>4891088
The 3 lobed kidney attaches directly to the intestine, no bladder.

Their mouth is just a hole. Instead of having a mouth and stomach they have a 3 part system with a pouch that holds and softens food, a tube that mixes it with digestive juices, and another pouch that churns it around with swallowed rocks to break it down.

Most are unable to physically swallow.

Their brains regenerate neurons at such a high rate they can be observed restructuring themselves significantly as seasons change.

Despite being highly intelligent they can't realize a UV reflective window is a barrier despite it clearly reflecting light, unless a rationally impossible condition (a floating, static object does not exist in nature, it must be attached to something, ie: transparent barrier) is created.

They are the strangest advanced animals ever.

Might just be that it's a female eastern bluebird. Their colors are less vibrant than a male's.

I'm starting to learn about birds. I'll be working on helping them over-winter at my place. I plan on planting winterberry shrubs there in the next year or two, for example. Here is another way I'm doing my part. I have never raked the leaves as my place.

There was a brown thrasher occasionally around my feeders in the spring and summer. They're pretty rare where I live and so the little guy was a delight whenever I saw him.

I don't try too hard to figure out the difference, if I see a big one I just assume it's a hairy. The bird certainly doesn't care if I'm wrong.

Peanuts mixed in sunflower seeds. And keep your feeder as close to the woods as possible, they are woodland birds, but they will fly out a bit if they see other birds visiting. I got like 2 or 3 pairs of them around my property that visit daily, not a lot but they make themselves obvious with noise, they always announce themselves.

I have a lot more chickadees like dozens of them, the titmice associate with them and so if you can attract chickadees you will probably get titmice too. Also they tend to completely disappear in the summer, after they stop singing for breeding season you could think they are just gone but they will show back up in the fall.

>Looks like one exploded in my yard today
:(
Down and bloody feathers scattered everywhere, I can't even figure out what got the little dude. I'm leaning towards the damn hawks that have been hanging out around my feeders every winter for the past two years but there's enough stray/outdoor cats hanging around that I can't really rule it out even though it looks way too violent for a cat hit and grab.
Oh well, it is what it is, nothing I can really do outside of taking down all the feeders right as it's getting cold or putting a pellet in random cats. I just hope they don't all get spooked away from my yard because of it.

vet using scotch tape? they can't afford medical tape to ease the pain? What kind of retarded practice is that anyway. why not cover the contact area with surgical mesh or some fucking tissues...
>>
>>4906672
>hurrr durr ist aminal aboose durr
did not look like scotch tape to me, it is going to be some kind of radiolucent adhesive tape to not interfere with the xrays.
Here's an artical, it's a common practice. The image that was deleted follows this article perfectly. It was 100% done by a trained individual for the purpose of xraying.

>>
>>4906854
didn't answer, why not cover the contact area with mesh? is it also common practice to stop critical thinking? its a shit practice if a layman can think of a better method. medical practices should evolve just because it is written in a book doesn't make it any less retarded. the fact that the practice didn't change to accommodate an easy solution means no one gives a shit.
