I recently moved to an old house, which I will be significantly renovating, so it's currently totally cluttered with building materials and my stuff I brought. It's been completely overrun by mice.It started weeks ago with just a few mice, I kept catching and throwing them out, but the were coming back, or new ones kept coming. I didn't want to use poison, because when one died it took me days to find while I couldn't stand the smell and I also watched a mouse who ate too little poison dying for hours. they unsurprisingly reproduced and now there's a shitload of small mice running around and droppings everywhere, I suspect that now there's probably almost 20 of mice total and I'm losing my mind. I now finally managed to find and close up the probable openings they used and I'm wondering what to do with them. I'd like to avoid killing them if possible, because the small ones are very trusting and even try to huddle up to me if I sit still (I know they're just vermin and I'm being retarded, but still), but throwing them out at this point is probably a bad death sentence anyway.I wonder if it's feasible to keep them in a huge cage throughout the winter, but I suspect they'll suffer in captivity and it'd be more humane to kill them. if so, what's the best way to do it to ensure they won't decompose in various nooks?

Either a predator (eg barn cat) or some type of bucket mouse trap (home made or store bought) which have the capacity to catch many mice quickly. I'd go with some strategically placed bucket traps

I first tried give her something to push against, then tried to pull her the same way she got there holding the base of her tails, but she kept holding the bars and I didn't want to dislocate her bones pulling too hard. I finally cut the wire in the opening her legs were sticking out from and bend the wire out, then help her push them down and she got on top of the cage and ran away. I hope she's alright and she only sprained some muscles or scratched herself against the cut wire (there was no blood) and it's nothing serious, because at first she was limping holding her hind legs stiff above ground, but then she quickly ran away on all fours, though visibly slower than normal.

I use normal Victor wood traps. The trick is to bait them properly, and to do that you have to think like a mouse.A mouse is safe, warm, and comfortable within the walls of your home and in the small recesses where it can build a nest undisturbed and raise its young without fear of predation or humans. Mice know they are weak and have only their size and speed to rely upon. With that in mind, foraging poses the greatest risk to mice because they are exposed. They can be hunted down by predators and eaten, or killed on sight by humans. They are also aware of traps and pitfalls to some degree, barring more elaborate solutions like vacuum style traps and bucket traps. A mouse has to make the reward worth the risk, and to do that it must be able to take some of the foraged food home with it to feed its young. Consider foods that a mouse can stuff into its cheek pouches and transport easily back to its nest. My typical bating solution is crunchy peanut butter rolled with granola. It's also a heavy bait and will weigh down the trigger more so it's much lighter when a mouse does try and stuff its cheeks.

The home was was a frequent tourist attraction for them.The thing is, my dad with his king complex, had every room except for the bedrooms, with rabbits, which probably attracted the mice. Removing violence from daily life has been a disaster for humanity. Here's what I do, I check the traps every morning and if a mouse is in one I give him a little test. Put a gloved finger in front of his face, try to pet his head, if he bites, I snip his head off with good scissors real fast, it's as merciful as I could realistically be. If he tolerates the petting and doesn't bite, I pull him off the trap, wash him with Goo-gone and shampoo and he becomes a pet. So far my ratio is 1:4 for pets vs snip. Pet mouse wears a little string leash and sleeps in a rolled up sock, they really don't eat much at all and are quite friendly.Oh also watch out OP, some mice have fleas. The glue traps are nice because the fleas jump off the mouse and just get caught in the glue, too.
