Here's the big rub though, regardless of how you stand on whether it was the "right" thing to do:
This squirrel was living with the dude for seven years, indoors. It obviously did not have rabbies. It had absolutely zero vectors to get rabbies until recently when they adopted a raccoon (which is dumb but an entirely different conversation). The raccoon was taken as well. If they suspected either had rabbies, they could have just tested (killed) the raccoon. If the raccoon was negative, the squirrel 100% would be negative. If the raccoon was positive, THEN there would be reasonable suspicion that the squirrel could have rabbies. If they kill the squirrel first (which they did), and it is negative, it still does not answer the question of whether the raccoon has rabbies, so they would still have to kill the raccoon.
They could also just put them in observation, as is procedure with dogs/cats.

Sounds like you don't understand rabies. It's extremely rare in squirrels and for one to have it from infancy and after 7 years of domestic living is all but mathematically impossible. The squirrel in question posed absolutely no risk to anyone.

Just because it is rare doesn't mean it's impossible. It is still a risk and made even greater that they had a rabies vector in contact with the animal. And I wouldn't trust anyone to tell me 'lol it doesn't have rabies bro' when they are already incredibly irresponsible with their animal. Millions of squirrels and raccoons are shot every year for fun. In most states they do not even have a bag limit. It is legal to get a permit to kill an unlimited amount of them for fun but illegal to own one as a pet.

This is the thing that I don't get the most. You check if animal that bit you has rabies BY KEEPING IT ALIVE and waiting for it to die. If it did die and displayed the signs of rabies such as hydrophobia, it had rabies. Meanwhile, the bitten human should take a vaccine against rabies.
