Why don’t orcas attack humans in the wild?I know we can only speculate, but I just think it’s super interesting. I can’t think of one other carnivorous apex predator that we have a virtually 0% chance of being attacked by.
>>4904086Just speculating of course, but I think they’re smart enough to recognize that we’re outside of our natural habitat, which must mean that we’ve somewhat conquered the planet. We’re not actively harming them, so they must see that as something to be respected and not feared. Also they are probably all extremely well-fed and don’t feel the need to eat something outside their natural diet because they know there’s an abundance of other fish/seals to eat.
>>4904086>>4904087An anon awhile ago wrote a good paragraph about this. Basically orcas are one of the few, VERY few animals that can actually comprehend the threat of humans. Their avoidance isn't just an ingrained instinct, there's logic to their carefulness of humansMuch like a weaker kingdom doesn't step on the toes of a powerful one, orcas solemnly bow to humankind. They know if they kill a human more will come to kill them, it's not worth it within their low reproductive cycles to fuck with us.
>>4904089I considered that too. Orcas are complex enough with their social structure that they are able to understand other minds. With the wisdom as well for foreseeing future consequences of their actions.
>>4904086Most animals attack humans instinctively. But orcas are conscious and they actively make decisions. Encounters with humans in the water probably happen so infrequently that the Orcas don't know what to do when they see a human. However, they frequently encounter boats, so some of them have decided to start attacking boats for fun. Put them in a situation where they can become familiar with humans in the water (an aquarium) and eventually some will decide to attack.
>>4904086They're picky eaters.
>>4904086I thought, besides maybe them being smart enough to realize that fucking with one human results in all of them knocking on their doors, we just have too little nutrition/too bony to actually bother eating.
We look too disgusting and they're high IQ
Honestly there are few animals that straight up eat humans at all. Most attacks are either territorial or because they feel threatened. Orcas are probably just smart enough not to see humans as either.
>>4904086They do, they just make sure it will never be recorded.
They sink boats.
Survivorship bias, humans that were attacked by orcas don't live to tell the tale
>>4904086That's really because even Bottlenoses are attacking people in Japan.
We are alien outsiders and not part of their diet
>>4904086Cause they're smart.
>>4904215>japanThat's the land of FAKK YOU DORPHIN, they at least have a good reason to.
I don't know if its bullshit, and I don't remember where i heard it, but I remember hearing that they used to attack humans a lot right up until we started using torpedoes in warfare.
>>4904095most animals have a genetic memory that causes them to be scared shitless of human speech
>>4904190>>4904208>mfw orcas are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal but leave no witnesses
>>4904086There are many sub-species of Orca around the world, that don't interbreed. They literally vary by "Race" and region with slightly different sizes and coloring, as well. They also have hyper-specific diets which define their types. Some feed exclusively on shark livers. Others only on Salmon. Others only on seals. I suspect that because we look nothing like any of these engrained food sources, except maybe a seal, they they leave us alone. Some seem to actually like people and seek them out and will bring them seal/fish carcasses as a "gift".That being said, they hate sail boats and have been attacking and disabling them by destroying the rudders a lot lately. Very clever fookers. All these large, sea mammals have MASSIVE brains and insanely good sonar that can basically "see through us" right down to our internal organs. They can hear every breath, heart beat, etc....we're not like anything they're used to and SCUBA really makes us stand out. Free diving allows humans to swim right along side Great Whites, Humpacks, Sperm whales, etc......but SCUBA usually freaks them out.
>>4904089>Basically orcas are one of the few, VERY few animals that can actually comprehend the threat of humans. This is only a very recent development though, on the seas at least. But we don’t have accounts of orcas ever attacking humans like we have for sharks, even dating back millennia. I don’t think that orcas would have known to be as wary of humans when the only human presence at sea was Greek triremes or medieval galleons and before whale-hunting ever took off.
>>4904375What is it about the scuba? Does compressed air fuck with their sonar?
>>4904086I mean, I wouldn't eat me either.
>>4904147>>4904086This is the correct answer. "Orcas" have many subpopulations which exhibit unique behaviors and maintain highly specific diets. Some orca pods will ONLY eat certain types of fish, others will ONLY eat certain whales or seals, etc and will only move on to other prey if absolutely necessary. Humans don't really have a chance to end up on the menu. That said, orcas have been known to capsize boats when humans are aboard, so I don't buy the idea that they "know humans are a threat." If they did, they wouldn't fuck with boats either because that can also get them killed.
>>4904448I don't know there's a pretty big line between things and people
>>4904462For you maybe. Animals even the whales don't have language to form those kinds of abstract concepts. I'm sure they have more than the ability to distinguish things along the lines food, danger, friend, fuckable, amusing thing and what not but it's probably more experiential than like understanding how or why it is that.
>>4904086i bet they did at some point, but I guess they fucked around and found out
>>4904253Meanwhile in other countries they put an "I" in front so the sentence gets a whole new meaning.Japan should do the same.
>>4904528They do, you just don't put it at the beginning of every subsequent sentence when the topic is obvious or it could only have one sensible meaning.
>>4904440Nothing that extreme. Bubbles are just loud, annoying and completely unnatural underwater, unless a whale is using them to make a "bubble net" to catch fish. Sound travels very far underwater and most creatures are virtually silent, same with a submarine. It's amazing how fast wild life relax once the bubbles go away. Great Whites, Sperm Whales, almost anything will let people slide right up to them.
>>4904439even 2000 years ago, a couple of dudes on a rowboat were killing full on whales dudes throwing spears have fucked up every large animal in every biome they could get to.
>>4904373
>>4904886>Bubbles are... completely unnatural underwaterYou must be underage. There is no way a fully grown adult on /an/ would post something like this. Just think for a bit before you post anon jr.
>>4904886>>4905015Um… which one of you can I trust?
>>4904916Even so, that would have been so sporadic that a species like orcas, globally distributed and divided into different “families”, would not have immediately picked up that humans were something not to be fucked with. No matter how intelligent. I think if they realized the threat that humans posed, it could only have been in the last 300 years when humans stepped up fishing to an industrial scale and relied more than ever before on large-scale maritime trade that increased our overall tonnage at sea.
Orcas were smart enough to accompany whaling fleets because they knew they might get some goodies thrown overboard. Maybe we're seeing attacks on boats now because that generation and their offspring they taught are dying out, and the young orcas don't know how humans have explosive harpoons and all sorts.
>>4904086Orcas tend to be smart enough to not eat random shit they see floating around. They have plenty of food. If weird aliens landed on Earth, we wouldn't eat them, we'd stick to beef.
>>4905419Speak for yourself. I'd be like Rambo out in the bush, carrying a steak knife between my teeth and wadding down my cutlery so they don't rattle, as I creep up on ET and make him a dinner party he'll never forget. If an orca doesn't eat me when I fall overboard I will take that as a personal insult.
>>4904086They do though, they're smart enough to attack "some" humans and not start shit with others.
>>4904448The only time I heard of boats being attacked by orcas, they happened to be migrant vessels. I wouldn't be surprised if some pod somewhere clicked out "hey these brown guys keep throwin plastic in here" and some orcajaks started sperging out about how the ocean has fallen.
Another reason that people are missing is that humans aren't their normal prey, so there's not much of an inherent "eat" instinct, and humans also just aren't a good meal at all. Most predators in general aren't too interested in eating humans, and only go after them for reasons outside of hunting (babies threatened), or if the animal has become maneater already which is usually caused by starvation or disease. And of those animals, brown and white bears are the only ones that show any real interest in man eating on any noteworthy basis.Even sharks don't bother with humans. Why would an Orca? Humans have barely any meat on them. And primate meat tastes awful.
>>4904447same here man
>>4904086They do. Orca, particularly those that live around Antarctica are the most aggressive towards humans and that's been well documented for yearsShackleton(?)( Whichever guy rode in the wooden boats with the handful of crew left) was lurked by them under the water when they set out for that island
>>4904086Orcas have a superstitious reverence for humans, seeing them as something live fairies or angels.
>>4905835anon you gotta remember orcas, like any dolphins, can be psychopaths.theres a video of some orcas taking turns slapping a stingray with their tails, apparently for more than 40 minutes. when it finally died, they just watched it sink and didn't even eat it.
