For a game that relies on atmosphere, good sound effects are vital. Shooters also need good sound effects, for firing and reloading and bullets impacting close to you. Also, how good is the game in other aspects? I might forgive mediocre sound even in a shooter, if the gunplay is phenomenal. That being said, good weapon sound does make weapons feel better.
