>Anyone collect coins?

Yeah a significant fraction of stackers are also numisfags. Dunno what your definition of a "cheap" Roman coin is, you can get plenty of common unimpressive smaller 4th century bronzes for under $5 each but they're not really satisfying. If your price is more around $50 then you can get an aesthetically appealing silver Denarius or a big 20+ gram Imperial copper alloy Sestertius (worth 1/4th of a Denarius), or an earlier Republic era chunky bronze As which often weighed closer to 30g. Big ancient bronze coins in decent shape are always impressive and quite enjoyable to fondle. While a denarius will typically have a diameter similar to a penny or dime the luster of ancient silver and sculpture-like high relief of the emperor's bust on any decent specimen makes them very appealing in-hand. You'll get more joy from 1 nice $50 coin than 12 meh $5 coins, so if you select something that is genuinely attractive at first glance and pleasing to the eye instead of settling for ugly coins that are only intellectually interesting because of their age and history you won't regret it.

It depends on the coin shop, some have ancients at exorbitant prices so don't settle for anything before developing a sense for the normal fair auction prices for different Roman coins.

https://www.ebay.com/str/ancienttreasures

I always recommend Americans keep an eye on this eBay dealer who lists and sells around 100 items every week. He's legit and his coins are genuine so you can look at his sold items to get a feel for what different things sell for. If you don't want to spend too much I recommend the mid 3rd century silver "Antoninianus" (double Denarius) coins of emperor Gordian III, they are quite common in high grade and usually have a diameter slightly wider than Denarii which is nice, debasement was underway at the time so I think their purity is in the 40-60% range but they look good in-hand. if you want a normal higher purity Denarius I recommend looking for one struck under Trajan, many of his more common issues are relatively cheap and the aesthetic quality of the dies tends to be pretty good.

>my problem with ancient coins is they're all teeny tiny specs you need a magnifying glass to enjoy, unless you spend a fortune for a decent size

I luv'em but the tiny Greek fractions are definitely an acquired taste. If you want chunky silver you can get common attractive ~16g tetradrachms for under $200, sometimes around $100. Roman brass Sestertii which typically weigh between 20-30g are impressive in-hand and appealing common issues can be bought for $30-60. I paid $34 shipped for my first one, a Marcus Aurelius. I was instantly enthralled, carrying it in my pocket and fondling it constantly for about a month straight. A thicc sestertius is infinitely cooler than any crappy little mass-produced 4th century bronze, I got some as a kid but they never really did much for me. If you want something super beefy, 3rd-2nd century BC Ptolemaic Egyptian bronze tetrobols weighing over 40g and drachms weighing ~65g are relatively affordable, i got mine in pic for ~$50-160 each. If you could plop one of those 2+oz monsters in your palm and feel how hard they mog "big" coins like silver dollars I'm sure you'd agree that they're worth every cent.

Ayyy, this Stonehenge round is my favorite by far, very cool. How much are those running these days?

>>58631217
Happy to help, I hope you find something that really checks all your boxes but be careful man, ancients can be irresistibly addictive. I never planned to collect them but became hooked for life after my first big fat hit of pure uncut sestertius.

I believe the artwork was undertaking a final approval with last second touch ups. From experience, to get a custom art to silver round takes anywhere from 2-5 months depending on the level of detail wanted. I am speculating at this point, but if the design was approved and started this month; it may not be until november; a better guess is that they are waiting for the price of silver to fall back down before purchasing large amounts of silver. not to be greedy but because whoever they are using is gauging them through premiums.
I bet, it is as simple as: noone could anticipate silver going to 30 in a month were caught off guard. I know the wait will be worth it, just gotta have faith!
>>58631882
You could always do safety deposit box; but that defeats the purpose of having instant access in case of bankrun. Just get giant gunsafe with a Faraday cage around it. If you wanna be fancy, get a magnetic lock with key cards/software that only you have access to.

His lazyness is biting him in the ass this time around. The round could have been achieved - or at the very least the blanks purchased -, months ago, well before the run up to $30.
If now the plan is to wait for silver to go back down to $22, there are similar odds it ends up going up to $40 instead.

That's a pretty risky gamble if that's the plan, sometimes you are better off eating the bullet and calling it a day. He still is comfortably in the green, even if he pays $10 more per blank than initially expected. But another leg up of this magnitude and he'll just break even+.

The silver blanks were prepaid well in advance. I tend to pay for them sooner rather than later to avoid any potential massive upswings in prices. I don't try to play or time the market
Pirate is taking long simply because it's a repeat of my failure on Crusader, but we are currently waiting for the production sample at this point so we really are in the final stretch

I'm sorry for your loss, anon. But it's always nice to see a loved one leaving precious metals to their heirs, instead of just paper money, with heirs continuing on their work, instead of selling everything ASAP.

Gold coins are expansive indeed, but think to your stack as a way to save for harder times or future generations. You're not "spending" money like you would do for booze or a fancy dress; you're just converting it. It's your shiny piggy bank.

If you can't afford saving the money for long term, then just stick with silver. As long as you buy stuff with the lowest premium, you're good!

Yeah I wanted to start off with a fair amount. I'm gonna limit myself to 4 or 5 coins a week. I have no debt or rent expensive so my income just goes straight to the bank which get eaten by inflation. Silver seems like the best investment considering the alterative.

Just holding it in my hands make me want more. I'm cutting down on all my other expenses, mainly food so I can keep a silver fund. I needed to go on a diet anyway and this desire for more Silver will be what keep me to it.

About to buy $100 worth of silver coins from jm bullion. I live in the US. Which ones do you recommend?
>>
>>58641717
I'd recommend getting coins that you like.
Also 1, try to get $200 of coins. Otherwise you're paying $10 for shipping, a 10% premium.
Also 2, use ACH or a paper check for a lower price than credit card. Takes longer, but helps for those on tight budgets.
Also 3, check other vendors for the coin you decide on - others may have lower prices.
>>
>>58641717
Check the silver at spot promos on findbullionprices. JMB should have a few. I picked up an ounce of gold at spot earlier this week off them and they had a couple things for silver.

99% of stacking is just minimizing acquisition cost. Don't pay shipping, don't pay sales tax, don't give the dealer much over 1% on bullion.

Very good, sir. It's useful to think of gold and silver and dollar-amounts rather than as physical objects, ironically. Silver is bulky, and a 100 oz in 1 oz silver-coins is a lot to look at, whereas it's 3K USD at current spot, and gold is roughly 2K USD, giving you 5K USD in PMs. Even if they increase by price in purchasing-power-terms (PP-terms), that PP will be 50K USD. so a good investment, but not enough to retire on and move into a Caribbean villa straight away. If you assume that the USD falls by 90% against PP, then you'll simply have preserved 5K current-USD of PP instead.

JM will sell 1oz gold / 10oz silver at spot to new customers. Bullion Exchanges has had some decent prices lately, but usually very small quantities. I cleaned them out last week for like 4oz at a little over 1% premium. APMEX is good on antique coins, but the good deals come and go really fast and generally aren't advertised. So you have to be actively watching them.

You keep $2000 laptop in plain sight so why do you think that you need safe for $2000 tube of coins? You are overthinking. If your concern is children or your crazy gf looking for treasures around your house, then just put it in a locked cabinet.

As to where to start: if you want silver, buy cheapest 1oz rounds/coins. Buying entire tubes (20 or 25 pieces depending on producer) is more convinient for handling and storage. If you want gold, then you can buy 1oz coins like krugerrands. If they are too big and expensive for you, then the next most popular option is British sovereign (it doesn't matter if it's modern or 100 years old, just go for cheapest) or 20-franc coin (they have various designs but are all worth the same, again go for cheapest).
Only buy from legit dealers that have registered businesses. You don't have experience yet to buy from other sources.

Whatever minimizes your premiums. Gold is gold. Old 20 franc pieces and sovereigns may be economical if you're looking to buy less than an ounce. If you buy something with collectible value, get antique coins with figures any retard would recognize like Napoleon or Victoria. Contemporary production collectibles are sketchy at best.

You are thinking in wrong categories. Current prices of everything are very low thanks to very effective supply chains.
You can buy stuff like fruits from different continents for cents. Westerners live in outrageous luxury. A hobo can find a coin on the street and buy things that our ancestors didn't even dream about.
But if supply chains disappear, you will be eating potatoes every day and an exotic fruit or meat will indeed cost enough to pay with gold.

It only took me an hour or so to sift through 50 bucks in pennies. Really not that bad. The amount of pre 82 makes it bearable. Unlike sifting through Halfs for pre 64
>>
I can understand stacking pennies for relaxation or to create art, but for those who are stacking for profit here's how the numbers grind…
A pre-1982 penny is 95% Cu, 5% Zn, and weighs 3.11 grams comprising 2.9545g Cu and 0.1555g Zn.
At the current price of $4.50/lb avdp for Cu, a penny has 2.93 cents' worth of Cu, and the zinc component adds less than 4 hundredths of a cent.
Wow! A potential instant profit of 1.93 cents of profit from each penny!
If your goal is to have a profit of $100 from the copper content in pennies, you would need 5178 pennies ($51.78) weighing 15.3 kg (=33.73 lbs avdp).

Going to sell them on ebay? Ebay takes a 12% cut of the sale price as a fee. You now have $88 in profit.
Unless it's for pickup, somebody is going to pay for shipping that 33.73 lbs. The customer will want to make up that cost - maybe by paying less for the metal, or you pay. That's another cut into profit.
Going to melt it yourself? You kind of have to – no commercial company in the US will do it for you: it's illegal there, and businesses have better things to do than risk their money, business, and/or freedom for the sake of melting your little stack.
>makeitfrommetal.com/is-it-illegal-to-melt-destroy-us-pennies-and-other-coins/
Bars you create can return the most profit. But you need to buy or make the furnace, fuel, molds, handling equipment, have the time and space to work with the stuff and create a product pretty enough to be saleable.

inb4 “But I can sell the pennies as pennies for a profit on ebay!” Yes, you can. But the prudent buyer would check each penny for date to weed out the zinc ones. That’s a lot of tedious work, so few people buy in profitable bulk.

Tl;dr: You'll more likely end up with buckets of pennies sitting in the garage for the rest of your life, and your kids will curse you for leaving this mess.
>>
>>58655730
I don't actively go out and buy pennies anymore.
It became clear, very quickly, that I was squandering my efforts on silliness.
My new plan for stacking pennies is simple and effortless:
Just pay for everything in cash.
At the end of the day you'll end up with some pennies.
Over time you get enough to sort.
My way of looking at it is more on an energetic level than financial.
I could spend my time chasing pennies.
Or I could spend that same time getting silver bullion.
I have a few hundred ounce of silver.
And a couple small boxes of pennies.
And bowls of nickels, dimes, and quarters.
The idea is to passively drain value out when convenient.
>>
>>58655730
You forgot the most important aspect - labor and time.
If you dont manage to do all that (driving to bank to get rolls, sorting, selling and sending package) in less that 12 hours, then your gain is worse than a minimal wage job.

Batches of "uncleaned" Roman coins are what you're looking for, preferably from the detectorists themselves. Serbia was always a great source, the ones I've seen and bought have all been genuine but you need to study the pics to make sure the coins are actually encrusted with dirt and have decent details and surfaces underneath instead of being worn-smooth, uncleanable or hopelessly corroded ate-up trash that some people sell as "uncleaned".

Anyway here's my pasta for ancient-curious newfrens:

When buying ancient coins on eBay, you must always check the Fake-Sellers lists for the seller's user ID to determine if they are trustworthy:

http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=18502.0

http://augustuscoins.com/ed/fakesellers.html

Some legit sellers occasionally have fakes slip through too so checking fake coin reports for the specific issues can be helpful, but probably not necessary for most common sub-$100 coins:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/

For identifying coins, these online encyclopedic databases are fantastic:
https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/i.html
https://www.asiaminorcoins.com/

Sellers I've bought ancients from with no issues, many are European so you need to select the "Worldwide" refinement under the "Item Location" section on the left side of the page or you won't see anything. Some sellers might not have anything listed right now but you can check their completed listings to see what they deal in:

is it better to buy silver and gold online or in person? i want to start. not sure where to go.
>>
>>58658275
It's better to buy from wherever you get the best deals, but to start you should check reviews for brick-and-mortar coin and bullion shops in your area and go browse in-person to chat with the proprietors and get a feel for the different products available, then compare against findbullionprices.com to see if they're reasonably competitive if you're planning on spending a lot.
>>
>>58657839
Thanks for the followup. It's much nicer than I imagined.
>>
>>58658300
if i only spent 1 or 2 k do you think it would really matter what price i bought the gold at? I know some places sell a little higher and lower, but if its only something like a 5% difference i feel like it wouldnt matter if its just something im buying to store wealth against inflation.
>>
>>58658409
>only 5%
bro that's a year of shadowstats inflation
just take 2oz of silver and throw it in the river
premiums are fucking cancer
>>
>>58658409
Depends how badly you want a particular piece. For 'just' a generic hedge against inflation, you really need to shoot for the lowest possible.
>>
>>58658441
>>58658473
So what general price should i try to buy some gold/silver for? I dont mind if i take a small hit on market price. Im buying it so it the dollar collapses I have some other resources. I was only going to spend 1-2k not 10k. If the dollar collapses, even if i bought my gold or silver at a slightly above market price cost, it would still be useful.
>>
>>58658481
>what dollar amount
A 20 franc piece is usually the smallest reasonably priced fractional, so about $440. You should expect to pay ~1% premiums on gold. JM is still doing the 1oz at spot promo if you're in the states.
>if the dollar collapses
A catastrophic fast collapse would still take over 10 years. You don't need to be panic buying on the weekly time frame.

I am in the states, what would you suggest buying (investing) into if that has any real significance? I'm not interested in buying these to make money, only to preserve a back up of wealth, so if something happens i can help my family. So I expect to invest more into this slowly over time. thank you for your responses.

Buy 90% silver. Rolls of dimes, quarters, and half dollars. Get them for as cheap as possible from a known reputable dealer. 90% US coinage is widely recognizable, protected by law against counterfeiters, and will fit your needs perfectly. If you want gold for barter, look into 14k jewelry at melt prices. It's going to be easier to conceal and trade than a coin and the premiums are less than American Gold Eagles. A $5 gold commemorative is also a high IQ play.
>>
>>58659147
i could invest more, i just dont really know what a reasonable minimum amount is. i feel like sub 5k is a realistic goal over the next few year. Not sure what % of your savings/investments should be in precious metals. 5% 10%?
>>
>>58659167
The answer to everything is usually 'It depends'. Both 5 and 10% can work just fine. It all depends on your personal financial situation, where you are in life, and what your goals are both with PMs and outside of them. I would reccomend having a small emergency fund of 90% silver like what you're describing, maybe 5% of NW, but definitely no more than 10% until you've paid off your house.

Anyone bought silver? How do you know it's real?
>>
>>58659695
1. smell it. it should have no scent
2. put a small neodymium magnet on the coin and tilt the coin. it should slide around slowly, with no sticking.
3. get a small scale, each troy ounce should be about 31 grams
4. if you're buying well known coins, you can get a caliper and make sure the diameter/width is what it should be

>what a reasonable minimum amount is
As much as you can afford while still living comfortably with a good buffer of fiat for emergencies.

My recommendation is about 6 month's total expenses (more is better) at current prices. If your needs per month in US$ come to:
2,000 for housing,
300 total for water, sewer, utilities, trash, natural gas
300 total for internet, cable, phone.
300 for food,
100 for gas,
x? hundred for medical insurance (about 700 in the US)
x? for car insurance (maybe 50)
400 for groceries
200 for 'other',
that rounds to about $3,600 (without the x? unknowns),or 1.5 ozt/month,
so about a dozen ozt gold or maybe 1k ozt silver or mixed however you prefer.

>If you want gold for barter, look into 14k jewelry at melt prices
14k is priced by local scrap value not melt, and nobody wants to barter random yellow metal. Boat people buy heavy 24k links. Any idiot can tell what those are immediately. They have high premiums but excellent barter value.

>where the fuck are you niggers getting 14k gold at melt/scrap prices

My LCS sells karat gold (and silver) jewelry at melt value which is slightly better than the payout from refineries. I was chatting with them yesterday and they remove all diamonds and sell them unsorted by weight in bulk to jewelers, far too cheap apparently considering how much they're begging for more, but all other stones are put in a box and sold for $1 each; things like rubies or star sapphires or opals along with common amethyst and semiprecious stuff. I'm told that several resellers go there to slurp high quality jewelry and stones to flip almost every day of the week. I wouldn't stack 14k wedding bands but if you can get more desirable designer jewelry at melt price it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some.
>>
>>58660333
yeah I'll have to check out my local LCS I guess. I like 14k gold

Extraction cost changes depending on the alloy and you need a test kit to identify it. Which is why nobody in their right mind takes 14k on barter. You can just bite a piece of 24k and know it's real.
