Can someone explain how companies can afford to pay high dividends?
Let's look at Pfizer. They have a dividend yield of 5.69%.
Their market cap is 167B. That would mean they need to be 9.5B in dividends, more than three times their annual profit.
What am I missing? Who gets dividends and how? This obviously doesn't add up so I know I'm misunderstanding something.

Pfizer's annual revenue is 58 billion. They pay out dividends and other expenses from this revenue. Their profit is what remains after paying all expenses.
