For example how can one nation claim to have "free trade" by trading with a highly centralised nation that uses slave labor (like China)? That isn't free trade since it's not a free market. If there were no taxes absolutely everything would be dirt cheap, a factory fucking pumping out any kind of product or service with division of labour, scale, etc should be able to make things absolutely crazily cheap, but the govt can’t have that, they have calculated and slowly shifted the amount of taxation to the point it is high enough so if you work hard you can just afford what you need, and just low enough for people in the current economy to not revolt
