Hey /biz/, I’m one of the 117,500 software engineers currently unemployed in the US, and it feels like the walls are closing in. Now, with Elon Musk and Donald Trump pushing to increase the H1B visa cap from 85,000 next year, I’m starting to think my chances of getting back into the field are slim to none.

How do I compete in a market where companies would rather hire cheaper H1B workers? Should I pivot industries, learn a new skill, or try freelancing? Is there even a way forward for someone like me?

Looking for any advice or insights on how to stay afloat in this mess. Thanks in advance!

Have you been aggressively searching? I found a new role after 2.5 months but it was probably 200+ applications and many interviews later.

what's your tech-stack?

I really seems like the job market is crazy over there. I think it will go to shit in central Europoor where I'm right now too.
Probably will be the end of me, since I suck at programming and mostly hate my job.

Honestly move to Latin America. Take the pay cut but there's always jobs down there for skilled stuff. I mostly like it cuz the women like me and I love latinas

Use your skills to make crypto bots/apps. I was forced to take that path after being laid off 17 months ago and im doing better (financially) than with job.

How easy is it to immigrate to Latin America from the USA?

Just leetcode you pussy. There are bigger retards than you getting jobs rn just because they swallowed their pride and decided to play the game. Yeah it's shit but the only other option is to gtfo either physically or metaphorically.

Spanish is literally easy as fuck to learn and girls love it when u ask them to teach u they think it's cute or something. Some countries are easier than others avoid the obviously bad ones like venezuela and Ecuador is getting super dangerous. Food is so cheap here I had a girl feed me a banana once when I bought her weeks worth of groceries for like 20 bucks

I swear you guys have to be doing something wrong. I can't avoid these recruiters. Must depend on the location or something.

How many years of experience have you got? I only have 1 and I'm not getting shit. Got an email once, but that went nowhere.

Nothing besides the year and a half before dropping out of college. And various at home tinkering. I'm more of a hardware guy than a software guy though. You trying contract work?

It's over homie. You gotta wait for Whites to rise up, could take a number of years to happen

Nah, I'm just a code monkey/wagie with no education in computer science. I guess even 1 year of university would put me ahead

I’m mostly using Java and Spring Boot, with some Angular for front-end. I’ve also done DevOps work with Jenkins and Kubernetes. The market just feels insane right now. I get that competition is rough, but it’s like companies are looking for unicorns or hiring H1Bs over locals.

What’s it like for you in Central Europe? Do you think the market there is any better for tech work, or is it just as bad?

I feel you, man. I've got a few more years under my belt, but honestly, it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference in this market. It’s like experience doesn’t even matter when companies can hire cheaper labor overseas or on H1Bs.

What kind of stuff have you been working on? Are you focusing on a specific niche, or just trying to cast a wide net? It’s brutal out here, but maybe there’s a way we can adapt.

That's a bold move, but honestly, Latin America does sound tempting right now. Lower cost of living and less pressure from this insane job market. Do you feel like the jobs there are sustainable, though? And how's the pay compared to what you'd make in the US?

Also, I gotta ask—how's the scene with Latinas? You’re making it sound like a paradise, but I’m wondering if it’s as good as it seems or if there’s a catch.
