What certs should I get if I want a cushy cyber security job? I have a top secret clearance and am about to finish up a computer science associates. I already make 160k, but I don't want to buy a house here. Would like to do this job for another year or so, buy a house then get my gf pregnant and work from home

Security+ and CCNA. Learn some linux too while you are at it. You already got the hard part, which is the clearance. I currently have the certs but am trying to get a clearance.
>>
>>59601244
Yeah my high pay is solely because of the clearance. Only thing that sucks is if you need a clearance, it's not wfh
>>
>>59601374
What is the process like on even getting a clearance? Do they really interview your neighbors and people you went to school with? Not that I'd have a problem if they did that just wondering what the process is even like.
>>
What IT experience do you have?
You can't jump straight into security.
>>
>>59601437
With a clearance I most certainly can. I've seen it done consistently
>>
i fucking hate computers im sick of this shit
>>
>>59601559
Me too. Guess I picked the wrong career as a programmer.
>>
>>59601232
Certificates are mostly meaningless unless you apply to dinosaur companies or govt.
Get real experience, contribute to open source or do something like hackthebox.
>>
>>59601391
Yeah, they will and the process takes a while. You'll need a company to sponsor you and the reality is most won't unless you're in a highly specialized position. Most people with a clearance worked in government prior, this is how I have mine as I was active duty for about 8 years in a cyber field before becoming a defense contractor.

Don't expect to WFH either, if you're doing cyber security you'll likely be stuck in a SCIF 8 hours a day without access to your phone either.

For certs, check out the DoD 8570, that will outline the requirements for IAT III and IAM III requirements for jobs. CISSP covers most of it but there are easier ones to get for specific roles. The EASIEST route to getting IAM/IAT III certified would be CASP & CISM.

Without a 4 year degree don't expect to increase your pay too much, I work for Raytheon and they won't even consider you for cyber roles beyond P3 without a 4 year degree. P3 salary tops out at 165k.

Finish up your associates and apply to the Cybersecurity program at WGU, it includes a lot of certs with the degree (Most classes are just certs, when you get the cert you pass the class). It's all self paced and you can get your degree in less than a year if you already have experience. I think currently it comes with 10+ certs in the program.

I got my through the military at 20 and took 23 months
>>
>>59601655
Noted, thank you. WFH isn't a necessity for me and I don't mind relocating, even though I might not even need to since I'm in a big city.
>>
>>59601694
>Without a 4 year degree don't expect to increase your pay too much
I don't plan on increasing my pay. I just plan on having my house paid off and living comfortably. The clearance is just to get my first job before I look for something wfh. I have my gi bill unused and almost an associates, so I'll get there one day

Well, where did you want to move? Dallas Fort Worth has a lot of defense jobs (mostly fort worth) and they have a lot of good veteran benefits in the state. No state tax and property tax is exempt for me.

Homes are below the national average while pay is above the national average.

Did you get your VA benefits? Pretty easy to get at least some percentage, I managed to get 100%.
>>
>>59601810
I'm in Arlington VA and don't like it(although I only pay $1100 for rent). I'm from Pennsylvania so I go back home some weekends. I'm good with taking a job down here in person for a bit before eventually going wfh full time. I'm cool with this job for a bit though because I'm technically tdy so pay low taxes.
>Did you get your VA benefits?
No I'm dumb and hardly ever went to sick call. I've been out for 4 years and might put in for some things soon but doubt I'll get anything honestly. Should've went all in on depression when I was getting out
>>
>>59601858
I used vetbcg to handle my claim, of the 5 people that I've recommended it to 3 got 100% 1 got 90% and another got 50% (But he had been out for nearly 20 years by that point).

You're not too late, but you're approaching the point where it's going to get more difficult. It's worth the effort as you'll probably get at least a rating that will pay your rent.
>>
>>59601899
Yeah I was gonna use Disabled American Veterans (DAV), not sure how great they are. Will look into vetbcg. Any tips on filling out my intent to file?
>It's worth the effort as you'll probably get at least a rating that will pay your rent
I don't think I'm gonna claim anything mental so don't think I'll get very much
>>
>>59601960
If you go through Vetbcg they pretty much do everything for you and just have you sign. The intent to file is just that, notifying the VA that you'll be filing soon which ear marks the date so you'll get back pay to that day if you get a rating.

It took about 6 months for me to get my rating back and since I did my intent to file before I submitted I got 6 months of back pay tax free.
>>
Be careful not to be called a "do-more-than-required".
Remember, if you're a civilian, you have absolutely NO RECOURSE if a military person decides to, for example, monitor the egress of your NAS.

Sounds good anon. Did they schedule any appointments for you or did you do that on your own? Congrats on your rating
>>
>>59602160
They do everything, they fill out all your paperwork, schedule appointments, etc. The most you'll have to do is request your medical records from the VA to forward to them and put your signature on some files.

They actually hired VA doctors on the weekends to conduct my evals, since they were VA doctors it basically streamlined my entire submission. They'll even coach you on what to say. It was probably the easiest process I've ever done with the highest return on investment. There is an upfront cost of $450 for physical and $450 for mental +50% of your back pay when you get it. If they cannot get you an increase on your rating they refund the upfront cost to you so there is pretty much 0 risk.

Sounds nice, do you or the people you refered them to do an initial claim? Or just rating increases?
>>
>>59602216
Two of them were at 0% one was already retired for 20 years and got 50% the other just got out and got 100%

Damn got this back sadly.
>Unfortunately, we do not assist with initial/new condition claims. The reason being is that for new conditions, all evaluations have to be done by the VA appointed doctors first and therefore removes one of the major benefits of our services. The DAV or your local VSO is your best resource available to assist you with this process.

Having to see VA doctors first is annoying

Are you the LMT recruiter who keeps finding my older and more secret emails to try and reach me?
>>
>>59602868
I haven't heard many good things about LMT, I work for RTX and just about everyone we've had that left to work for Lockheed came back to Raytheon.
>>
>>59602808
Usually people leave service with SOME claims, even if they are rated at 0%. You sure you have nothing on your file?
>>
How the fuck do I even get a position half your pay with a cybersec associate degree. I'm making 45k right now in upstate SC as an IT technician for an MSP. Is it strictly due to my location being shit.
>>
>>59603139
You get good pay by getting certifications that matter like GIAC or ISC2 and having experience with cloud security, vulnerability management/monitoring tools, auditing tools, linux, ePO etc..

Having a security clearance is more valuable than a degree, a degree in cyber security just opens up more managerial positions for you.
>>
>>59603105
I didn't even have a physical on the way out. I was on a small shitty base in Germany for 3 years that didn't have a normal sick call. Had times I got medicine for hurt foot or back pain though. Did a 100 mile march 3 times. I was young and retarded and nobody was giving me advice on making sure everything was documented sadly
>>
>>59603139
>How the fuck do I even get a position half your pay with a cybersec associate degree
I don't work in cyber security. My pay is that high because I have a high security clearance
