Got a letter from a debt collector offering to settle my debt at about a third of what I owed on it. Correct me if I’m wrong, but if they’re making that offer, doesn’t that mean that they purchased the debt from the original creditor (chase bank) for less than that, meaning that they’d still make a profit if I took the deal? Also, should I accept their offer? The original debt was about $8500, and the deal was around $2800.

Might be worth it to pay just to start the timer on the 7 year credit score removal if you can afford it. Unless of course you’re still defaulting on debts then just wait until they write it off.
