I dont get it. If you still have a mortgage and still own the land, why wouldnt you still be paying that? Why would you magically owe nothing all of a sudden because your house got destroyed?

I don't care because they're californians

there is nothing to get. they owe money they must pay it back. however, headlines and articles like these are merely planting the seed for more gibs, in this case it is 'there should be a debt jubilee for those impacted by the fires'.

I think we all who the real victims here are.

Yeah, it's because """"""journalists"""""""" are a bunch of leftoids who think that housing should be free. Everyone should get to live in Malibu, man, it's like a human fucking right, y'know. Pass the bong, no bogarting, maaaan.

Property taxes should end up getting reassessed to the value of the bare land, maybe minus whatever cleanup costs are needed. Can't really tax a 5br 3ba 4000sqft house when there's nothing but cinders and a few scorched boards left of it.

It’s very funny how the majority of wealthy people, both private individuals and corporations, constantly preach about the wonders of free market capitalism. But the moment they actually take a big hit, they turn around and demand that their losses be socialized.

Especially funny when the giant corporations being bailed out with taxpayer funds are notorious for dodging taxes by funneling their profits into subsidiaries in tax havens by leasing their own product IPs to themselves. Then after they’ve been bailed out with taxpayer funds, they go right back to talking about how wonderful free market capitalism is.

Turns out human greed and corruption inevitably destroys any economic system, given enough time

this makes most sense actually in this scenario
since it was the govt who caused these fires and cut the fire dept.
at least reasses everyone's house / land value for property taxes. as for mortgage... i mean im all for repaying it but also fuck the jewish banks

>be home "owner"
>home burns down
>still have to pay a mortgage aka debt
>still have to pay property taxes for a property that no longer exists
Owning a home is a liability, not an investment.

That would likely cause an increase in tax since CA's prop 13 froze the cost basis for property tax to 1978 prices. I'd be all for that because fuck those people but that'd help close to no one.
