>>60232920>b-b-b-b-but what about HL2HL2 isn't canon.Picrel and vidrel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf2vd80CTqUGordon probably died in the nuclear explosion that happens at the end of Opposing Force, which Laidlaw (writer of HL) very specifically has confirmed is canon and which was his idea.
>>60232996>>60232920Tell me some more. Was Gordon actually still trapped inside some weird limbo during the explosion at the lab this entire time?
>>60233225They probably (likely mainly Laidlaw's idea) had something like the 1961 film "La Rivière du hibou" in mind, where a guy dies at the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKqheHkASgs but manages to free himself and swim away or so he believes; a bunch of stuff happens that he wants to happen (Gordon's power fantasy), but none of it was real; he actually died. >When Farquhar is dropped from the bridge, the rope breaks and he falls into the river. He frees himself from his bonds, removes his boots, and begins swimming downstream as the troops fire at him. Farquhar is swept through rapids and crawls ashore exhausted but laughing with relief. Glimpses of tree branches, sky and crawling insects are interrupted by a distant cannon shot which sends him running through a forest, then along a linear and orderly lane. Finally arriving at the gates of his home, he pushes his way through foliage. Farquhar reaches open lawn and runs toward his wife as she walks toward him, smiling and weeping. Just as the couple are about to fall into each other's arms, Farquhar stiffens and gasps, and his head snaps back. The scene cuts back to his body hanging from the bridge, his entire escape and reunion with his wife revealed to be an illusion experienced in the moment of the drop. That film was re-used as a Twilight Zone episode (which is how I first saw it): https://archive.is/PDsHz#Twilight_Zone_airingOf course they may also have had Jacob's Ladder in mind. Laidlaw was very much into horror at the time. >If you're holding on, you'll see aliens tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the aliens are really angels freeing you from the earth.Jacob's Ladder and the 1961 film / Twilight Zone episode are probably the most famous pre-1998 examples of the main character really being dead and not realizing it.
>>60236592Either Gordon died in the experiment and the whole game happens in a few minutes or even seconds, or he was mortally or extremely badly wounded in the experiment (absorbing high doses of weird radiation and/or crushed under falling shit) and scientists (who all seem to be doctors; "don't worry, I am a doctor") were trying to save him ("morphine administered") but then he died anyway in the nuke. In Opposing Force and Blue Shift (aka Blue Shit) Gordon is clearly out there doing stuff, so make of that what you will. You can see them as an alternate timeline where he survives. With HL in isolation though he's dead (or that was their idea at the time). There is no real established Valve canon btw. Laidlaw said HL2 isn't canon but he also said Valve doesn't have a canon. There's just the official games, as opposed to fan mods. Shephard's and Calhoun's games were made by Gearbox but they were totally official and boxed together with HL. HL2 though may as well be canon as part of the continuation of Gordon's delusional power fantasy while dying. He makes his boss at Black Mesa into the bad guy. And it's often overlooked but Gordon has some sort of glowy connections; it says in the HL opening that his "administrative sponsor" is classified, which sounds rather glowniggery. G-Man thus is likely Gordon's "dream interpretation" of that guy while he's dying; the real government-man sponsored him somehow, helped him financially, so in his power fantasy G-Man comes to save him.

I feel like I have a lot in common with the people in this thread
I forgot the HL "logo" video, when I was posting earlier. Here it is. By the way this "logo" webm and the "logo" webm from Blue Shift are lossless encodes (VP9 in lossless mode). Despite lossless mode, they ended up being smaller in filesize due to consisting of fewer frames (the BS and OF logo-videos are the same length, but the OF video is 30 FPS whereas the BS video is only 6 FPS).Also btw these two:>>60240022>>60240044are from the same avi file; there is of course no "gearbox.avi"; the file "valve.avi" located in the "media" folder of Opposing Force and Blue Shift contains the Gearbox intro plus the Valve intro (in that order).
