Can someone help me understand, in schwab on a closed position, disallowed losses are added back to the gains/loss calculation. Shouldn't it already be incorporated into adjusted cost basis?
>gain/loss = proceeds - cost basis + disallowed loss
I get wash sales in theory, I don't get what the fuck schwab is doing

Read the IRS document. 1) know the wash sale rules, you may not be able to sell stock with some loss in Dec 31, 2024 and just buy it back Jan 1, 2025 and claim the loss on your taxes. Also, if you are trading in your personal account you can write off a max of $3,000 per year. So if you bought $20k or stock, and sold it for $16k you lost $4k, but you can only write off $3k this year and $1k next year. But you need to understand what you did, I dont know, and this is not tax advice. Just hire someone who knows this and gets it straightened out and learn from it going forward.

why is schwab doing anything? You can look at, and download your transaction history. believe you can print early tax reporting from their website. And you can select the tax sales method for selling if you bought the same stock at different times (like first in first out, first in last out, or tax lot optimizer). So, see which one you are using. If you are going to me making money, especially good money, you need to really understand the details to keep the most of the money you make. You are a business, learn to be the best business man you can be to max profits and minimize taxes.

Ive been having a thought on the financial system, businesses, narcissist managers, and why terrible businesses stay in business.

I think the inflationary system creates an effect where businesses always seem more profitable than they are. If a company is stagnant or slightly unprofitable, inflation conceals this- often from the business owner himself if hes not smart. Every year, wage stagnation means business owners are protecting their salary and profits by shaving off the real wealth of most of their employees whos wages do not keep up with inflation. There's also an additional layer to this, as real inflation is a hidden value, and the economic reported data is a fake and gay reported inflation that is manipulated to make things look better than it really is.

You should have someone do the calcs for you to determine the best approach. You can deduct interest on mortgage payments plus other expenses and the interest/dividends you earn on the 600k may cover all your expenses (mortgage, living expenses, repairs).
You always work, on the house, car, relationship, making sure you manage money, pay taxes, just find something you like to work on that makes good money or at least keeps the savings going up.

Plenty. for day trader status IRS says you need to make on average 4 trades per day 4 days per week and in "size" or some shit like that, meaning real money to earn a living. See IRS regs/info about day trading. But you may also want to form a company to hold the assets and trade those assets so they are protected. And if you are actually making money day trading you can invest in your own retirement plan you set up with the company, but you should get legal advice on this as its a bit more complicated. A reason to form a business if Juan Sanches rams your car and has no insurance and sues you, you have no money, your separate business has the money and the business was not operating the car, the car is yours, or belongs to another business you own. If you can't make money day trading I don't think you get day trader status, or the wash sale rule exemption.

>Do bull flags work in a downtrend?
The short answer is no, a traditional bull flag is not expected to "work" (i.e., lead to a continuation of an upward move) in the context of an established downtrend.

A bull flag is defined as a bullish continuation pattern. It signals that an existing strong uptrend is likely to resume after a brief period of consolidation or profit-taking.

Yeah I've already prepared my family for an eventual crash. I tell them what I tell them everytime "don't panic, don't sell, just let it blow over and in 4 years it should be fine".

IMO we have one more crash and one more bullmarket before the US dollar and debt crisis finally explodes. So this isn't "the ONE". This is just the AI bubble exploding.
AI is the future, but just like the Dotcom bubble, the valuations are just insane.

deflation is bad. signals declining margins. causes consumers to pull back spending, thinking their money will be worth more in the future, which reduces profits, which causes more discounts and margin compression, it is a feedback cycle and it is undesirable. it sounds good if you think as a consumer, but it's a nightmare for a policymaker or business, and is a symptom of bad economic health.

and you would be right, no one can predict when exactly it will happen but you can control your risk regardless
why chase ai megacaps chasing +10% yearly gains at this point while risking like -30% downside
diversify to more defensive assets for now, you're not a multi billion dollar fund who can only invest in megacaps, you can liquidate in a second and chase lower hanging fruit with better risk-reward

benner cycle gets joked around, the cattle take it too literally instead of realizing that market psychology is a constant. Corrections and crashes will happen periodically
we are probably safe though until the april "crash" is out of the 1Y chart, it's the same shit with the covid bubble where it starts crashing once it's too far away from the march dip and more ppl are taking profit vs fomo.

Although, if I were retired, I wouldn't mind having dividends because I'd rather get paid regardless of market conditions and not have to worry about the current state of the market, even if it means missing out.

>objective
that doesn't mean what you think it means. and i suppose that's true but so what? reduced spending objectively leads to lower profits. lower margins are objectively bad for businesses and economies. hard economic times objectively lead to layoffs. if you consider people getting poorer and having fewer opportunities "more power" then you're wrong. when people have less and are struggling for work does that really disempower policymakers and businesses? no, just the opposite. and historically, deflationary regimes gave power to the bankers, look up the free silver movement, who supported it and opposed it. inflation empowers consumers by lowering their debt burdens, growing economies empower consumers by giving them job opportunities, optionality, and wage gains. deflation is not mcdonald's lowering their big mac prices, it happens when things are really bad, there's a reason you've never seen it in america, because things never got that bad.

Yeah, in that case I get it. If a stock is only being bought because of some shitty dividend, it's a crapshoot.
ETF's are way better than individual stocks.

The only dividend stocks that you should be buying outside an ETF are ones that are dividend stocks ONLY because of the financial settup of the company. REITs and Pipelines, etc.

Upper management tends to always be filled with retards. My old skip level boss is giving a fucking presentation about A.I when the company hasn't even implemented shit.
>>
>>61118132
And there is a really simple reason as to why SCHD is so popular compared to other dividend etfs. Its never decreased its dividend even once and its got the highest div growth cagr. Nothing else comes close
>>
>>61118012
Honestly SCHD and SCHG are the only 2 tickers that haven't betrayed me.
I think the trick with schd is to acoomulate shares by wheeling but I'm too dumb to not fuck it up probably
>>
>>61118137
My company did layoffs and then complained less work was being done. And then openly stated new hiring was being paused and the money directly filed into AI

These are GREAT etf's if you're retired. But if you're not, why buy them?
The purpose is to deliver payments regardless of market conditions at the cost of far less upside potential. If you're not close to retirement don't do it.

>Check out ticker EPD
The LPs are pain always late with their K1s and dont you risk having to pay taxes in other states? Also how do figure out depreciation - from their website calculator. Last time I owned and LP I just paid an accountant to deal with all that shit. There are other energy related stocks that pay better dividends with out the LP bullshit
>>
>>61118052
You get wealthy through the system you setup not your individual actions.
Dividends reduce the number of actions required for cashflow by providing a fixed amount of cash flow.
Growth stocks have to be sold to provide cashflow, even though capital gains taxes will be lower by selling growth stocks, you will lose because you're actively reducing your position and undermining your investing system. The amount you sell for cashflow will be more arbitrary and that's bad.
Then again if the selling is automatic then it's another story.
>>
>>61118176
I don't give a fuck about taxes I just use turbotax. And the tiny bit of extra tax on an LP is still worth the asston of dividends.
>>
>>61117977
not really, the G fund is basically cash, similar to a money market fund like in fidelity. if the market is ever low you can use those funds to buy more, you should also be contributing regularly every pay check and increasing your contributions % over time
>>
>>61118184
*like SPAXX in fidelity
also the C fund is basically SPY/the S&P 500, look how that has done over 20+ years
>>
>>61118160
The whole philosophy behind dividend investing is to isolate yourself from the stock price and so a crash. there are a lot of people who have loved ones like grandparents and uncles/aunts who had their retirement completely ruined by a 50% stock crash. There were millions of people who retired before 2000 and saw their net worth collapse and SPY not recover for 13 years. So their first decade or in retirement was stolen

>>
>put money into bonds yielding 4%
>use this as a collateral to take out a loan
>use the loan the buy shares in whatever
>loan these shares out for a fee
>but also use then as collateral for another loan
>use this loan with insider knowledge to buy lots of options on a ticker
>in a cash margin account at 100:1 leverage

Its like you dont want to become a multimillionaire overnight

>there's a reason you've never seen it in america, because things never got that bad
a third of america's money supply was destroyed by bank failures in the great depression, the largest single deflationary event in history (that i know of)
if i understand right, it sounds like you're arguing for the orthodox view of modern economists, which is, essentially, a little inflation is good, while too much inflation or any deflation is bad
i don't agree with the orthodoxy. i think the discipline of economics was badly warped by the great depression and has spent the last 90 years leading our economic policies down a path of slow but certain ruin in the name of "avoiding another depression"
none of the negative economic outcomes you mention are a function of deflation itself - they're a function of sudden, catastrophic deflation from a cascade of bank failures, i.e., the great depression
the problem with orthodox economics is that any mention of deflation's benefits to regular people is met with a description of how bad hyperdeflation is
well, yeah, but hyperinflation is bad too

Yeah, we're real lucky

I cant complain though, my position in life is generally comfy and the ones I interact with have been pleasant
>>
>>61118194
you're too scared of a crash dear. too conservative, even if it happened you wouldn't need to sell. and you cope far too much about schd, it's down for the year, not geared to the good investment opportunities. i know you have a strategy and intent, but be honest. it was not a good investment. instead of digging in and defending it, learn from the mistake and try to pick better stocks. gonna play some video games, have fun and be good tonight. love you.

Personally, I think the 2% inflation matched the 2.1% target fertility rate to grow a population, with a 25-30 year horizon.
With birth rates falling, inflation has to skyrocket to balance the equation

t. Schizo intuition
>>
>>61118054
Just the fact that it sold under asking is a sign of things happening in itself. It is happening VERY slowly, and probably never to a level where I could afford to purchase anything at all. Immigration is keeping the price floor much higher than it should be right now. Either wages should be rising or real estate needs to come down, but the immigration is keeping wages low and real estate high.
>>
>>61118221
>2% inflation matched the 2.1% target fertility rate
i choose to believe this wholesale and will now integrate it into my worldview
>>
>>61118229
It is sort of intuitive though, if its true
Youre a risk manager at an institution, your model says X% more people will be born over time, so you have to match expected longterm assets and liabilities, which includes issuing debt

Holding majority cash in a yielding fund, and then selling $100-200 chunks of it to dca into broad funds is a great way to approach it longterm.
Could also buy the dip if like, SPY drops 2x ATR from its current recent high

That's what I do now and make a paltry fraction of percents that still get wiped during sell offs.
At least the dividend is usually a net positive.
>>61118301
I thought the play was sell cash secured puts until you get assigned, giving you both premiums and the shares at a lower price?
>>
>>61118329
Are you agreeing or disagreeing with that? I cant tell
Personally, i think avoiding losses via good risk management is key
