Bond yields move inverse.
if you're holding bonds, and yields rise, you're fucked.

Lets say you're holding $100,000 of bonds at 2.5% yields with 10 year duration, and then yields rise to 5%, you lose about $20,000, but it also depends on duration. If it's a short duration bond, you won't lose much, but a few k, like under 5k. But if it's a long duration bond, you get mega fucked, and could lose like $50k

Make sense? When you buy bonds, you should try to buy them at high yields, and you make more money when yields fall, and you lose money when yields happen. This happens because newly issued bonds at higher yields are worth more than older issued bonds with lower yields

So when interest rates go up, existing bonds with lower yields may not be profitable and the holder desires to dump them. This contributes to rates rising even more because of the incentive to attract a buyer. These make bonds look more profitable, with higher yields, this attracting money away from the stock market, because bonds are seen as less risky.

This contributes to stonk red line go down.

That's not a real loss. You could say that about holding QQQ vs only NVDA. It's a risk vs reward calculation.

Now I think bonds at 2.5% are a shitty investment, but if you have a shitload of wealth accumulated sometimes you want to keep it safe. Mostly its for companies that can't invest too much in riskier assets.

I have been doing this for awhile. I want to build but waiting on finding the right spot and timing. It's 1-2 years down the line but I don't want to worry about market timing. So I roll a large downpayment balance monthly with 1 month USTs. It's not the best setup I know, but I'll take 3.7% while keeping my money liquid.
