Is it just me or have food fads completely disappeared? Why is this? Is it because everything, literally all of it, is just soulless derivative AI filler garbage? Like has anything cool happened AT ALL in the last few years? Have you see ANYTHING? Literally no. Nothing new ever happens anymore.

did you miss the hot honey thing? now all the grocery stores have hot sauce in the honey section.
>>
>>20417432
I'm talking about actual foods for adults, not the wendy's april sandwich special or whatever boxed branded garbage is now getting "viraled" in the form of tiktok advertisements

Like birria tacos or korean fried chicken wings or cronuts or poke or "prohibition-era craft cocktails"
>>
>>20417441
Of course I go outside. I mean I can't always fuck your mom at my place.
>>

Everything is a food fad now, it's tiktok memes all the way down. You're just too old to know about them anymore.

Except I've seen some of them and they are in no way new. Like people on tiktok will act as though pickles are the hot "new" thing even though they peaked in like 2013
>>

they still happen, it's just that they come and go too quickly for you to realize that it was a fad. one i can name is pine needle soda

This is the big one. I'm not buying some hot new condiment if it costs 10 bucks a bottle or some new bullshit that requires a 100 bucks minimum to participate. Any food fad that arises right now will be centered around price, some gross cut of meat or other cheap thing that foodies will discover tastes okay when cooked properly. Food fads are a luxury of a decent economy.
>>
>>20417940
I make my own food fads then get extremely pissed off when it becomes a real food fad because it's only fun for me if I'm doing something nobody else is

This, theres a million fads. The only thing that "changed" is that now tiktok culture goes through fads monthly, when before old media would push hard for some meme or other and itd spread slowly.

It's called getting old. Fads still happen but you've aged out of the marketing so you'd have to actively look for them. You probably won't be welcome there anymore though. Maybe it's time to just take up baking or something.

People probably got tired of le artisanal burgers and le exotic cuisines and now just eat whatever they find tasty
Probably gonna see a trend of people rediscovering normal food from normal ingredients
>>
Maybe some people actually found out that you can save money by not ordering food every other day
>>
the fads I notice the most now are hot chicken and hot honey.

>Is it just me or have food fads completely disappeared?
You're right.
>Why is this?
The internet happened. Everybody shared information. Between 1998-2003 you could talk to literally anyone online. 2003-2010 you noticed people found their specific subjects. 2010-2015 was peak internet freedom. You found anything anywhere about any topic, provided you were knowledgeable. But that was the end point, for cooking too. The website for the world expo in Milan, 2015 had 200K+ recipes, all free, all by the best chefs in the world. And then the gates closed. Websites, videos, tutorials, libraries, old book scans disappeared. And with them the fads. First molecular gastronomy. Then all the fad diets. With 2 exceptions, because nobody knows they're fad diets.
>>20419605
Those are marginal and last a few weeks to maybe a year, with no turnover to speak of. And that's the real drive behind these fads: people want to feel validated if they take part. Nobody joins a loser cult, everybody wants to join the winners.
>>
>>20418653

>>20422612
This, same reason why you don't see cooking gadget fads like slow cookers or instapots being pushed now either. The demographics who make most culinary purchases regularly (I'm guessing middle class married white women) feel the pinch right now.
OTOH you see fast food trends (smash burgers, poke bowls, bao buns & overpriced "street food" in general) take off with some regularity because zoomers and younger millennials have money, no kids and don't see delivered fast food as a treat but as a regular meal option. They consume less alcohol and tobacco but delivered junk food probably makes up a very surprisingly high percentage of their weekly meals. Also why gimmicky snack foods (takis, one chip challenge, Mr Beast bars etc) are becoming more common.

Used to live near the cronut place. They are pretty good. Not sure if it's worth waiting in line for but if you are just visiting I would say fuck it. Even if you don't get a cronut all of their pastries are really good. I moved out of NYC after pandemic recovery. It was so nice 2020-21 when shit was empty. When everyone came back I couldn't stand dealing BS like pic related everyday. Live in the burbs now. Everything is so much better once you leave that dump.

New things happen, just at a far faster clip than they used to. People don't want to or can't afford to wait and see if something new catches on. If it doesn't go massively viral within a few weeks, it is considered a write-off. Enjoy what you can, when you can, it will only get worse from here.

Because food fads were a fad and it's running out of steam because its running out of material. I think there's only, like niche asian foods (are we still on korean or has it gotten more niche?) and african food left.

I slept on smash burgers, poo-pood griddle instead of grill but christ, five guys burgers are literally just:
>smash a burger on your griddle
>Cook quicker than they do it for some reason
>Chees
>Use a brioche bun
>wrap in tinfoil
>Wait 1-3 minutes
>Literally a five guys burger minus the sesame seeds

Its liberating to no longer have to pay their demented prices, and I feel stupid for not realizing this sooner. Even did perfectly imitative fries to them, that just took a bit more work to double fry but it was easy too.
>>
>>20423126
Slow cookers have been around for decades and go in and out of fashion. Instapots hit market saturation so everyone who would have one has one. And Takis are basically Doritos and have been around for years at this point, the one chip challenge lasted for 7 years before it was discontinued, and Mr. Beast bars are just a regular celebrity promotion.
