I have never had a truly good "American" pizza, all of the best pizza I have had is the kind that attempts to emulate Neapolitan. Americans care way too much about the sauce and cheese when the focus should be the dough.

Debates about food are so tiresome. There is no culture around the world whose only culinary output is healthy, reasonably portioned dishes made from local ingredients. Everyone has their garbage they eat. Euros get mad at us for pizza or McDonald's then go and get a kebab with mystery meat or beans on toast. It's just nationalist virtue signalling that is easily rebutted.

A big problem with Italy and tourism is how cynical they are with it. I had pizza in the central square of Florence, of which all the shops and restaurants there are actually corporate owned, and it was just sloppy greasy pepperoni pizza, easily beaten by stateside pizza. They seethe about their cuisine and culture but even in their own country they don't care about maintaining it.
