Got one of these to steam vegetables and it's great. Does it remove more nutrients than roasting or frying?
>>
Did you mean to type this into google?
>>
Ignore the trolling idiot, OP. Steaming does not remove nutrients as much as roasting, frying or boiling, so long as the water doesn't touch the product.
>>
>that nostalgia rush
I havent seen one of them in 30 years
>>
>>20690942
Steam is water
>>
>>20690963
Steam is not water, or rather, steam is the gaseous phase of water in a context where there is actual water (water in the liquid phase of water) as a direct contrast, and the water the anon is referencing in his post
>Steaming does not remove nutrients as much as roasting, frying or boiling, so long as the water (in liquid form) doesn't touch the product (since then it'd be boiling)
Do you understand now how your post adds absolutely nothing to the conversation and is both pedantic and less accurate? This is a cooking board, not a chemistry class.
>>
>>20690972
What is the chemical composition of steam?
What is the chemical composition of water?

So how the fuck can water not touch the product when steam IS WATER.
>>
>>20691038
Again the chemistry does not matter, since in context all that matters is a distinguishing of phases.
What, you want him to steam veggies without touching any water including steam??? hardly likely
So the point of anons post is to say 'don't let the veggies touch the liquid water' but that sounds stupid so he just said 'water' as opposed to 'steam'
You are the most autistic pedant to ever disgrace this humble Vietnamese pho forum. We all know steam is h2o. But it's not water in the phase sense.
>>
>>20691038
Stop being a goof. You know what was meant was the boiling water below the steamer tray.

Retard.
>>
>>20691038
Water is not just h2o. Water is a colloquial nickname for the liquid phase of h2o. Steam is a colloquial name for the gaseous phase of h2o. Ice is a colloquial nickname for the solid phase of h2o. You should know chemicals react differently and systems behave differently under vastly different temperatures and pressures.

That's a really tiny pineapple.
>>
not getting involved in this dumb water vs steam argument but the water always turns the color of the vegetables and I assume contains leeched nutrients
>>
>>20692364
Of course it does. But it's also the least leechy of cooking methods OP mentioned. I think only microwave & certainly sous vide would retain more nutrients.
>>
>>20690639
did you mean to ask this on r/cooking?
>>
>>20690942
except for vitamin C which is destroyed by heat.

>>20690972
steam IS water.
>>
>>20692832
A certain amount of C is destroyed over time depending on the temperature. It doesn't instantly bread down and evaporate when it hits that temp.
>>
>>20690942
>>20690972
FAGGOT
>>
>>20692945
it still gets destroyed.
>>
>>20690959
I used to play with this as a stargate-like thing for my action figures.
>>
>>20691038
can you drink steam??? NO!!! you can BREATHE IT IN without DROWNING unlike WATER unless you're a FISH!!!
>>
>>20693110
Is this vitamin C in the room with us now?
>>
>>20693682
Please don't try to breathe steam.
>>
>>20694302
>please don't ever take a shower, wash dishes, your hands/face with anything other than cold water, nor stand over a stove with boiling water
>>

Not anymore

I've never seen so much fucking idiocy in one thread about water. So many of you are so fucking dumb

they are making a come back i saw them yesterday in the supermarket
>>
>>20690959
I've used one of these my entire life and I'm 30. I never thought of it as old fashioned, it's just a common kitchen tool. How else do you steam broccoli?
>>
>>20690639
So, you just pop it into the microwave with a small dish of water under it?
>>
Yes it sends them to the phantom zone
>>
>>20696504
with a steamer
>>
>>20696667
That is a steamer though. The collapsible basket. What else is a steamer?
>>
>>20696700
Just shoot your broccoli with one of these
>>
>>20696700
A big steamer basket or purpose-built steamer pot allows more than 1 inch of water, so you can get more steaming done without worrying about refill.
>>

Electric frying pan with a cookie sheet under 2 legs.
>>
>>20696884
How does it balance with only 2 legs?
>>
>>20696927
>How does it balance with only 2 legs?
The same way humans balance with only 2 legs. Duh doy, fr fr no cap bussin.
>>
>>20690639
I have bought many of these and without fail, one of the leafs will come loose or fall out. Really frustrating. I've just given up and use it as it is.

>without fail, one of the leafs will come loose or fall out. Really frustrating. I've just given up
I feel the same way about Canadians.
>>
>>20695037
Sure, uh huh. It's time to cook, Jesse.
>>
>>20692226
No? Unless you think this is a stove top version. Pictured is a "lion steamer", named so because you can easily fit 2 smaller lions in it. That hoop in the middle is actually a shackle that's intended to he hooked up to a crane.
>>
>>20690639
Why is the steamer basket filled with fruit?

So you're conceding that steam is water vapor? WATER vapor?
