I'm a bottom shelf bloke, I'm talking $9 a bottle Evan Williams tier, I don't like spending $ on alc/ however, my friend introduced me to knob creek, and I'm like fuuuk, that's good. Now I'm spending more and I hate that.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

They sell Knob Creek for $17 at Sams Club, for that price it probably is the best bang for your buck option out there

I remember when my brother got into making swish. This was basically because booze is so expensive in leaf land that people were buying old aging casks and filling them with water to leech all the booze out and get hammered on the cheap.

If you want some nice bourbon, I was recommended a cheap bottle I really enjoyed a month or so ago. Look for Benchmark's "Full Proof" 750ml bottle (not the standard one). Such delicious notes in my experience. Vanillas, maple syrup, etc. It's $21, but very flavorful, and 62.5% as compared to a typical 40%.

On a side note, to any other whisky drinkers in here, how do you honestly feel about Jack Daniel's No 7? I got some since my grandmother doesn't drink spirits anymore, and it tastes so...like nothing? It's sweet and easy to drink, but kind of metallic and sour on the finish, with no real clear notes. Maybe good for cocktails, but I drink my whisky neat.
>>
>>20934624
Holy shit, is that what swish is? I heard about it when I watched Trailer Park Boys, but that sounds FUCKED.
>>
>>20934546
I bet you sail down knob creek every day lmao (because you're homosexual, see?)
>>
>>20935099
Yes, that's where people live, and you need people to buy your product to ruin a successful business.
>>
>>20935259
There's nothing wrong with Jack. A lot of people say it doesn't have much flavor, I think people have gotten so used to massive barrel proof stuff and are demanding bigger flavors. Jack is meant to be smooth and inoffensive. I think it's overpriced personally but as far as flavor, it does what it's supposed to do for a Tennesee whiskey.
>>
For me it's wild turkey
>>
>>20934832
I haven't tried the bourbon "Tennessee whiskey" single barrel barrel proof but the rye single barrel barrel proof is simply fantastic.
And I'm saying this as a fan of Wild Turkey.

>>

How is it a "youtube opinion"?

I live near the distillery and have been enjoying them for years now.
>>
I went to a Wild Turkey tasting event and the owner of the store put out a bottle of his RR 15 year to allow us to taste because they had it for sale and it tasted amazing like sweet caramel and stone fruit but just thick like syrup, I ended up buying a bottle for $400.
The SRP is $250 but you can't find it for that price anywhere and everywhere else near me or online sells it for $500.
>>
>>20938385

Walmart started stocking the Rare Breed, almost bought a bottle but it's almost $45 for a 750 bottle so I just bought my 1,75 101 for $34 instead.
Might still pick one up to enjoy ocasionally, just finished my last bottle of "good" whiskey. Dickel 9yr single barrel I picked up at the distillery. Wish I didn't have to drive 12 hours or would have done the tour.

I've tried their lower-end stuff and it was OK but I didn't think it was worth writing home about.

What really surprised me recently was Traveler. I was apprehensive because of the Stapleton collab but it was on sale and I figured nothing from Buffalo Trace could be too awful so I gave it a shot and it's actually one of the best $40ish bourbons I've tried. Haven't gone for another bottle since I usually stick to the $20-30 range unless it's a special occasion but I've cut my drinking WAY back to like a bottle a month or less (vs. a bottle a week or more before) lately so might go for more fancy stuff now.

Consider Evan Williams 1793 as a value option. $33/1.75L. I earlier posted WT101 ($42/1.75L) as my go-to but explored today and am pleased. It's more viscous than most other whiskies I've tried in the mid-range. Pleasant flavor. For 75% the price of WT101 it is arguably a better buy.

Woodford, and quite frankly most of brown-foremans bourbons just don't really do it for me, and they all kinda taste the same too.
Pic related, no way this shit should cost 100 dollars and taste so one dimensional. I feel the same way about Woodford batch proof. Suprisingly I like the Jack Daniels family lately way more than OF and Woodford.
>>
>>20939779
What the fuck are you talking about?

Most of the bourbon market is MGP sourced juice, and those are well loved bourbons using it.

What the fuck are you even trying to argue here?

Name your top 10 favorite bourbons and I can almost guarantee at least one is using MGP sourced juice.
>>
>>20939857
Jack Daniels is definitely the superior distillery rn in the brown foreman lineup.
Jack Daniel's single barrel barrel proof btfos most all whiskeys in its price range with only a few competitors like rare breed being able to compete.
Old Forester only has like one good product right now for whiskey fans and it's their 1920, if you look at the reviews for their single barrel it's mixed with most people not feeling like it's worth the price and everyone saying it's too hot aka young.
>>
So heating up evan williams eggnog up to a light simmer (like hot cocoa) wont mess up the alcohol content right?
>>
>>20935259
I mostly agree with this anon:
>>20935408
It's not bad, some people act like it's rot-gut trash but it isn't. No 7 is perfectly fine but I would agree that I like it better mixed.
Gentlemen Jack is actually decent but at a bad price point.
>>
>>20940273
Yea it 100% will.

Ethanol boils well below water, so it'll lose alcohol content fast when heated.
>>

>>20939857
I've had individual bottles of OF that are great, but the problem with 100+ dollar single barrels is there is zero consistency; the lootbox of the whiskey market
It tickles me when single barrels win whiskey of the year or best in show
>Henry Mckenna SB gets best whiskey
>Heaven Hill just went through their warehouse trying every barrel, picked the absolute best one, and submitted it for judgement
>price immediately doubles from 30 to 60
>1792 Barrel Strength gets best whiskey
>Old Bardstown just went through their warehouse trying every barrel, picked the absolute best one, and submitted it for judgement
>price immediately doubles from 30 to 60
etc etc
such a fucking farce of an industry
>>
>>20940370
Scotch is the same way in a lot of cases, consistency has gone to the wayside over the last 15-20 year.
>>
>>20940340
Knob Creek is the low rye mashbill, only Old Grand dad and Basil Hayden are high rye in their mashbill.
>>
>>20940370
$100 for a store pick is ludicrous, the store better be letting you try it at that price.
in my area 1792 full proof is everywhere and theres lots of single barrels at around $45 to 60
Meanwhile people go nuts over willett and fucking Eagle Rare picks

My pro tip for everyone is to look for New Riff single barrels, there's a ton of variation and flavor and it won't kill your wallet

It's allocated here, I've not that hard to get, but you gotta go on the allocated release day for the month which is annoying, you can't just walk in and buy it any day of the week.
>>
>>20940566
Idek why 1792 gets allocated outside of being a Sazerac product. The bourbon is nothing special, and there's tons of other Kentucky distilleries doing way more interesting things. Also their juice is everywhere ie Kirkland and Calumet and probably a fuckton of NDP
>>
>>20935259
>>20935408
Funny enough I can't even remember the last time I tried Jack. I have a vague recollection of finding it really harsh but I would've been a pretty inexperienced drinker at the time. I guess I ought to buy a bottle and give it a try, if I hate it I can always just use it for mixed drinks for friends who don't care.
>>
>>20940654
I havent had JD in at least 5 or 6 years. I kinda stopped with liquor and moved to beer some years ago. Was always partial to Glenlivet, Glenfidditch and Johnny walker. Occasionally have some Jameson but that shit makes me angry when I drink too much of it.

>>
>>20940566
Men who make it their hobby to buy allocated bourbon make me cringe. I cannot imagine spending my spare time driving to liquor stores and "building relationships" with the owner just for the chance to buy a bottle that is, at best, marginally better than something that you can buy off the shelf any day of the week.

Its insane how alcohol is the only one of legal controlled substances that makes me feel like a zombie not in control of my skin suit. Even though THC remains in your system for months.

Think it's cause of the timeframe in which the active and after effects hit you.
Out of any of the legal controlled substances alcohol is the only drug in which the negative effects, IE a hangover can be cured by consuming more of the alcohol, thus putting your body in a feedback loop of feeling miserable and like shit, and drinking. Especially if the reason you started drinking was feeling like shit in the first place.

Took a 2 week break and suddenly everything gets put into perspective.
>>
>>20940753
I also switched mostly to beer for years but I've gone back to whisky and bourbon in the last few months, sick of being fat and I can drink WAY less overall with liquor. (Not just in terms of calories either, I went from 3+ beers a night to like half a finger of scotch or bourbon.)
>>
>>20941050
I wasn't previously a drinker but in the last three months I have been drinking whiskey or bourbon 1-5x a week and, for the first time in my 40 years, I have developed a slight amount of visceral fat (slightly belly bulge and also perhaps beginnings of some love handles). No beer or wine or other diet changes, and so I attribute it to the booze.
>>
>>20941104
I believe it. I've never been able to eat the food to get overweight 240 6ft3 but it wasn't that bad.
Then I started drinking 1-2, sometimes more handles of gin a week at the start of covid and I'm now 240-350. and I only went overboard on delivery during 2021.

Quitting/majorly cutting back to only drinking when out and offered for the foreseeable future.
>>
>>20941109
Since it's still fresh in my mind I can say that life is much better when not drinking. I'm also done with it soon. I experimented this summer and it has its merits for sure but it is the quintessential one step forward two steps backward activity.

>I don't like spending $ on alc

None of that is needed

It's run by the local government, no relationship needed, every liquor store in the area has identical pricing (MSRP, no secondary market prices), and the allocated bottle list is published every month with which bottles are at which stores and how many bottles are available.

I have never waited in line longer than 30 minutes and I have almost always managed to get the allocated bottle(s) I was looking for.
