Many spice mixes are common, that is to say garam masala well be listed as an ingredient even if the spices that go into it are also listed. If that makes sense.
So recipes will say one tsp of garamasala, one teaspoon of cumin; even though garamasala already has cumin in it. Chinese five spice is the same.

Spice is qualitative for post purposes, so there's no point buying a greater quantity of stale spice.

As a general rule, buy hard spice. Doesn't burn in the pan, go stale as quickly, go bitter. Very few spices are for table use, you might buy some spice ground just because you're going to use all of it, or it's a bastard to grind.

Clive and keenes are reasonable good, but really only for one or two kinds of dish. I use mine exclusively for fusion dishes like curryworst or Singapore noodles.

If you're new to curry powder, try making a curry pie. Or if you can't make pie, make a curry sausage stew

Many "Indian" spices are no actually from India (like cinnamon), and many are equally valuable in western dishes (tamarind, fenugreek)

I keep a tin of Keen's in my spice cupboard and use it in my savoury mince for a bit of extra flavour. I don't use it in anything else.

Yeah, I like it.
I have a can in my spice drawer. Every now and then I'll add a spoonful or two to a stir fry or mince or whatever.
I was making midnight carbonara a few nights ago, and randomly added some curry powder to the egg/pecorino mix. Turned out great.
