I'm going to New Orleans in a week. I want to hear brass bands and eat oysters. Where's good? I'm not a "foodie," so I'm not looking for anything fancy or trendy. I just love oysters and don't currently live in a good place for oysters.
>>
Personally wouldn’t recommend eating gulf oysters raw. Too big and slimy and not nearly as briny or sweet as oysters as you can get from the northwest and northeast. NOLA does some of the best fried oysters, check out domelises, parkway or Casamentos if you can get a table. You can get great shrimp there if you’re looking for chilled seafood.
t. I spend a week in NOLA at least once a year every year

>gulf oysters
What about river oysters from the Mississippi?
>>
>>20982286

Good to know. Thank you. Any other recommendations? I've never been there, but I'm going with my girlfriend. She's been several times, always with her family. They are definitely tourist trap kind of people, so when she wants to go somewhere I know is going to be not worth it I'd like to have some alternatives lined up.

It's been too long, to give any actual examples, but I remember the best places being way off the main drag, Bourbon Street and out in the country/swamps. Fucking quonset huts, serving up unbelievable oysters, catfish, alligator and dirty rice.
>>
>>20982152
You have to get an oyster po' boy. I can't remember the good po' boy places the locals like because I haven't been there in a decade but definitely figure that out.

>>>>/trv/
Someone over there probably knows better than this tendie and skyline board
>>
>>20982662

The tendieboys here beat /trv. Zero replies there!

>>
>>20982152

What happened? Is there something you want us to know about you other than that you hate yourself?

>Zasu
Last time I went there it was fucking sensational. One of the best meals I’ve ever had in America, get whatever fish they recommend for your entree. Fabulous wine list, lot of really hard-to-find bottles. If you only have the budget for one really nice expensive dinner I would go here. Very approachable as far as fine dining goes, nothing too weird, didn’t have one bad dish from start to finish. Hard to get a table, make your reservation as far in advance as you can.
>Patois
By far my most frequented dinner spot in New Orleans. I think they do the classic New Orleans dishes the best. Even if you just go for cocktails and snacks at the bar you’ll have a nice time. Not cheap but always really good quality and I never leave disappointed. Good service. Their brunch is just okay.
>Lilette
Go-to fancy lunch spot. Service and kitchen are slow so be prepared for a three hour lunch. Good wine by the glass selections. Best French fries in NOLA.
>Cafe DeGas
Go-to hangover brunch spot. Reasonably priced. Very French. Get a Bloody Mary or mimosa. Cool spot with lots of history. Best escargot in NOLA.
>Boucherie
Delicious boudin balls but the menu is on the heavy side for sure.
>Camelia grill
Very fun, very affordable diner breakfast and brunch joint.
>Saffron
Indian fusion with great drinks if you’re feeling adventurous. Not cheap.
>Saba
Very good israeli-NOLA fusion, also good drinks. You can just order a bunch of different hummus and bread and light salads. Their entrees were overpriced, go there for lunch. I’ve heard Shaya might be better but I’ve never been. There’s an amazing little cafe down the street, I’m not sure if it even has a name but if you find it lmk.
>Maypop
Last fusion place I would recommend. Vietnamese-NOLA-SouthAsian thing. Also Good coffee if I remember correctly.
>St. James cheese company
Best cheese shop in town. Delicious sandwiches.

>cafe du monde
Do not wait in line. The line does not exist. It’s a completely made up invention created by tourists. You can walk up to any empty table or see people leaving and just sit at their table. Harass the servers as politely as possible unless you’re okay sitting there for over an hour.
>central grocer
Walk around the quarter, get purple drank from Lafitte’s then come here and eat a muffaletta.
>Tito’s
Gooood fuckin Piscos and Ceviche, Peruvian. 90% of people that don’t like this place usually order the wrong thing, might spook the boomers, maybe more of a date spot for just you and your girlfriend.

Other notable spots I would avoid
>Pêche
Super high quality seafood but last couple times were not good, not worth the price. verging on celeb tourist trap.
>Atchafalaya
Boring menu. very heavy and greasy. People rave over this place but it’s impossible to get a table for dinner. NOLA locals have to fight with the host every time just to get a shitty lunch table and every time it’s the grossest meal I have on the trip. Never had one good dish or drink. Severs were at least nice.
>Antoines
Tourist trap. Heavy and gross. Very expensive.
>Galatoire’s
Same as above.
>Clancys
Just okay but insultingly expensive iirc.
>Steins market and deli
Only if you’re starving.
>dat dog
Nothing special. Maybe if you’re drunk.
>Bacchanal
Gross. Outrageously expensive and the staff love to rack up the bill by bringing you a new drink every time you’re not there to tell them to stop.
>Cochon butcher/Cochon restaurant
Both expensive heavy and just okay.
>Arnauds
Can’t remember anything about the food and I’ve ate here at least three times.
>Sofia
Nothing special.

Also
>general advise
It is genuinely difficult to not overeat in this city. Half these restaurants share the same menu and the very best ones shouldn’t make you feel like you’re about to explode during or after the meal — unless you intentionally over-order because you’re still curious about the menu after loving the meal, I wouldn’t recommend doing this your first time visiting New Orleans — if you eat at the bad places you will feel sick and disgusting by the end of day 3. You won’t remember the food, youll just remember how sick you felt and how many days it took to feel normal again. You’ll know you fucked up if you’re considering skipping meals. Unless maybe you’re a 300lbs southerner that’s used to eating super rich fatty and dense food at every meal.

Have fun with your girlfriend and don’t try to keep up drink-for-drink with locals unless you can seriously handle your liquor. This is one of the few towns where racking up multiple DUIs is considered socially acceptable.

**you can great shrimp in New Orleans!! But at casamentos you should get oysters and crab. I dream about Casamentos fried crab claws.
>>
>>20982927

Thank you. Very helpful.
>>
>>20982970
No problem. And if for whatever reason you get forced into one of my “avoid” places, you can still totally eat well but I would advise you order very light at whatever place you go to next. And obviously this applies to any of my recommended restaurants if they flop on you for whatever reason.
>>
>>20982892
>central grocer
central grocer is closed right now
you have to go into the ghetto ass liquor store next door and its a 50% chance if they will sell you a mufaletta
>>
>>20982970
dont go to any fusion spots
youre in the south and new orleans for a reason. why go there to eat fucking pajeet food?

how long are you going to be here?
>>
>>20982892
THANK YOU for this take on Bacchanal. everyone heaps praise on it and i thought it was entirely average and forgettable, not to mention a complete pain in the ass to get to.

op i would put Fat Boy Pantry and Molly's Rise and Shine on your list, both within a couple blocks of each other in the Garden District. great bourbon bar there called Barrel Proof as well if you're into brown liquor.

I want to order one but can I ask for a “poor boy” instead of saying “po’ boy?” I am educated and it’s below my dignity to say “po’boy” Also can I say oyster instead of “oye-stah?” I’m not a snob I just don’t want people to think I’m poor
>>
>>20984917
if you verbalize the words "poor boy" here i will shoot you myself.
>>
>>20984917
dont forget to ask for it dressed
>>
>>20984932
I will politely ask them to add whatever I want on it individually by item, I will not say “dressed” like some local Cajun hick
>>
>>20984953
Enjoy your spit.
