hi /ck/, rate my fat rendering setup
>top: wet method
>bottom: dry method
10 lb moose fat in total
love, /out/

2/5
You can render even more fat with the unused stoves. Pretty comf otherwise

also this is the result of the moose butchering thread I posted on here about a month ago. this and 81 kg (180 lb) of moose meat was the result
>>20982295
the big pot was actually on the top right stove with water before I realized I want to try the dry method too. oven is at 125°C now. don't have any more fat
>>
>>20982297
How does moose fat compare to beef fat?
>>
>>20982340
good question. guess I'll see. but like most game moose is very lean. this specimen barely had any fat on him because it was just after rut. last year we felled some pre-rut cows that had some great dumpies I tell you what
>>
>oven pot is starting to give off lovely fat fragrances
oh my
the boiling bot by comparison makes me want to barf whenever I get near. I'm leaning towards straining it and putting all the fat in the oven overnight. it 00:24 here (CET)
>>
Looks comfy. What are you going to do with all of that moose fat?
>>
>>20982369
>What are you going to do with all of that moose fat?
vacuum sealing some of it and putting it in the freezer for later use. turning the rest into soap to sell to city slickers
>>
>>20982376
how do you make the soap?

fat + water + lye
the mixture of fats and the type of lye you use (NaOH vs KOH) determines the softness of the soap. soap based on pure animal fat is too hard so I'll probably add some olive oil to the mix. we'll see.
if you add an alcohol instead of water you get biodiesel. for example rapeseed oil + methanol + NaOH = RME (rapeseed methyl ester)

put the wet method pot in ice cold water about 15 minutes ago because I need to sleep. here's the result so far. going to leave the dry one in the oven overnight and the wet one in the fridge. maybe transfer the wet fat to the dry pot

here's what the pot looked like just a few moments ago. I scooped out all the big pieces and then passed the molten fat through a strainer. now I'm cooling it down while I think about further processing

there's the transferred fat cooling in a water bath. that's something like a 4 liter pot filled almost to the brim. I spilled some which is why there's fat floating in the cooling water
my entire kitchen smell of grease now
I'm thinking of trying the wet method again, on the leftover from the oven pot, to maybe extract a bit more. after that I'm thinking of clearing the fat, by maybe melting it in water or something. will have to look it up
>>

That's looking good.

So do you eat those afterward? Surely they're just fried bits of moose.

here's the result after cooling. I put the left pot out on my balcony to cool in the winter cold
>>20983387
it's mostly connective tissue and bits of meat. it's basically cracklins. I found this guy making some from pork belly and it looks quite similar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3kWIxvyfKA
there was some hair and whatnot on these bits though so I don't really feel like eating them. this is also why I want to clear the fat a bit to get more gunk out

>there was some hair and whatnot on these bits though so I don't really feel like eating them
I've eaten pig snout that still had some bristles on it. It was pretty good.
>>
>>20983433
how does it smell?
>>
>>20983945
like grease
>>
>>20983960
the good kind?
>>
>>20984032
it doesn't smell like bacon if that's what you're after, because it isn't smoked
>>
>>20982554
Based soap maker, I strain down my bacon grease and mix with the cheapest shittiest olive oil and a tablespoon of coconut oil to soften it and increase lather. 1/2lb of lard + 2 cups of olive oil is enough to make like a pound of soap that lasts almost a year.
How do you sell your soap. Use any add-ins, or just as is? I'd like to do the same.
>>
>>20984356
haven't sold any soap but I plan to. winter market is coming up. I'm already selling moose meat
thanks for the coconut oil tip
>>
>>20984361
I forget the percent but 1-2 spoonfuls of coconut helps create a foam when using the soap rather than the sticky sickness of Castile style soap. Like you said, animal fat is too hard, so it also doesn't spread too well, so if you're using cheap homemade animal fats for soap, it helps to make it much more useable.

The biodiesel stuff is cool as fuck too but that's above my DIY/chemistry level.
>>
Hate to tell you this dog but your fate has been rendered null and void by a single typo. And you had so much potential too. Goodbye OP. I am so sorry.
>>
>>20984368
yeah I'll probably have to experiment. I found this page on purifying: https://bumblebeeapothecary.com/how-to-render-and-purify-tallow-so-that-it-is-odorless-and-white/
TL;DR: use saltwater to pull out impurities. this is a common thing in chemistry as well, where two immiscible liquids and sometimes a salt are added to separatory funnel, shaken and then let settle and each layer drained off
>The biodiesel stuff is cool as fuck too but that's above my DIY/chemistry level.
it's not terribly complicated beyond having to heat it to around 50°C and leaving it for a couple of hours, then gravity separating
>>
going to start cleaning half of the fat with saltwater. I'll keep the thread updated

there we go. half the fat in the pot, 1 liter of water and ½ dl of salt, all in the oven at 100°C. will stir once all the fat is melted then pour into some metal bowl
>>
>>20983433
You would get better yields by blending the solids before rendering.
>>
>>20986082
yeah I reckoned that as well when I was throwing them out. something for next year. I will also try to get more fat during slaughtering and butchering

alright the refined fat hardened. got it out of the bowl and flipped it over onto a plate. after poking at it a bit with a knife the gunk in picrel became visible. scraped it off and put it back in the fridge. starting a second batch
I'd say it smells a bit less after the refining process. still smells faintly of meat though. not a problem for cooking, but maybe for making soap. we'll see. for fragrance I'm thinking wild rosemary (skvattram) for its calming properties, or some other wild herb
